Words of Welcoe Dear Colleagues, The convening of the 20th International AIDS Conference (AIDS 2014) in Melbourne, Australia, in July 2014 represents a treendous opportunity to highlight the diverse nature of the Asia Pacific region s HIV epideic and the unique responses to it. Gathering in Melbourne, we will work together to strengthen our efforts across all regions and around the world, building on the oentu of recent scientific advances and the oentu fro AIDS 2012. The biennial International AIDS Conference is the preier gathering for those working in the field of HIV, as well as policyakers, people living with HIV and others coitted to ending the epideic. It will be a treendous opportunity for researchers fro around the world to share the latest scientific advances in the field, learn fro one another s expertise, and develop strategies for advancing all facets of our collective efforts to treat and prevent HIV. AIDS 2014 is expected to convene over 14,000 delegates fro nearly 200 countries, including 1,200 journalists. The conference will be held fro 20-25 July 2014 at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre. The International AIDS Society, the world s leading independent association of HIV professionals, with ore than 16,000 ebers in 194 countries, is organizing AIDS 2014 in collaboration with international and local partners. The Australian health policy response to HIV has been characterized as eerging fro the grassroots rather than top-down, with a high degree of partnership between scientists, governent and counity. AIDS 2014 will be an iportant opportunity to share the benefits of such partnerships with other countries. Hosting AIDS 2014 in Melbourne will also ake it possible for those fro across the region to attend the conference and share their successes and challenges on a global level. The larger Asia Pacific region has the largest geographic area and population in the world, draatically varying levels of wealth, and a coplex ix of structural and behavioural deterinants of HIV risk, giving the experts fro the region unique perspectives on the epideic that will be of great value to their colleagues fro around the world. The knowledge and the skills were transferred to y colleagues in the Medical Acadey of Sofia, Bulgaria, in the Medical Faculty.
