The Port of Kobe is the second largest trading port in Japan. Kobe Harborland is a beautiful shopping and entertainment district situated along the waterfront. Featuring an array of large-scale commercial sites from department stores, superstores, and specialty shops to hotels. Next to the tower, between Meriken Park and Kobe Harborland, sits the Nakatottei Chuo Terminal where sightseeing boats depart on lunch and dinner cruises around Kobe Bay and to the Akashi Kaikyo Bridge. Cruises take around one to two hours and cost from 1100 to 3300 yen. Look at the beautiful night sceneries!! In autumn early in the morning, fog can be seen when the sky is clear. The view is such that the castle can be seen surrounded by a sea of clouds, thus resembling a castle floating in the sky. Fees: 500 yen (adults and high school students) As time goes by, visitors have given the names of castle floating in the sky or Japan s Machu Picchu to the ruins of Takeda Castle. By train: Get off at JR Takeda Station and take the mountain road by the south. Be aware that it is a mountain trail, so please wear appropriate shoes. For the courageous ones, you can hike to the top (about one hour). Takeno beach The hot springs in Kinosaki Onsen contain a wealth of minerals such as sodium, calcium and chloride. These elements are said to be good for fatigue, digestive issues, nerve and muscular pain, and bruising. Other aspects such as; water pressure and buoyancy, are also said to be good for health. Each of the seven bath houses in Kinosaki are all different with unique features. Whether it s an outdoor cave bath, or an ice sauna, you can try them all! Kei no Hama beach There are two beaches near to Kinosaki which can be easily reached via rental bicycle or train, Takeno and Kei no Hama. There are lots of places to stay at both beaches, and many tourists flock there during July and August to enjoy swimming in the crystal clear waters. No train service in the island. Enjoy biking! Infrequent local buses around the island are provided by Awaji Kotsu. Hitch-hiking is a viable option if you get stuck. Explore Tadao Ando's Architectureland... "Awaji Yumebutai", an enormous complex built on an enormous excavation site - the dirt was used to create an enormous man made island near Kobe. The southern port of Fukura there are daily cruises to see the Naruto Whirlpools and the Naruto Ohashi Bridge (2000 yen). If you go by the expressway bus, get off at the Fukura bus terminal stop. From there, it takes two minutes on foot to the Fukura port. If you go by car, use the Nishiawamihara Interchange of the Kobe Awaji Naruto Expressway. There is a free parking area near the port. They tend to be larger in summer than in winter, and are largest during spring tides, which occur every two weeks. Sail through the Naruto Whirlpools In a narrow straight connecting the Pacific Ocean to the Inland Seto Sea, powerful whirlpools swirl twice a day.
Access to Awaji Island Rail JR Shinkansen bullet train stops at Shin-Kobe Station. About 1km south of Shin-Kobe Station, Sannomiya Station is the main rail hub for intercity Hankyu, Hanshin and JR trains to Osaka and Kyoto. There are no trains on Awaji Island.
