In our view Orchids, of all varieties, was the specialist subject of our speaker, Geoff Hobson this month. He was obviously very knowledgeable and keen, when assessing plants that members brought along to the meeting, to set us on the right track even to the extent of re-potting ailing specimens. Some, however, were beyond help and had been killed by kindness (overwatering) of which the writer was one of the guilty parties! Tuesday the 7 th July is the date of the club outing to the Hampton Court RHS Flower Show and in case you were not at the last meeting, here is a reminder that we are asked to assemble at the bus stop in the High Street near the village hall at 8.15 am. It would be helpful if you could remind any non-members of this. Thank you. As always, new garden club members are always welcome; annual membership is 10.00 per person, or 2.00 at the door for non-members. Brenda Boyd SUNDAY FUNDAY A club for all primary school age children on the first Sunday of each month in the Methodist Hall, 10.30am to 12noon. Lots of crafts and games and snacks. PARISH COUNCIL NEWS FOR JUNE Parish Council. We offer our congratulations to our new Parish Clerk on her marriage on June 3 rd, and she is now Mrs Tracey Judd. By the time that you read this we will have opened a new Parish Council Office, located in the timber chalet behind the Redhouse Community Centre. Tracey will work from this office and will be contactable on the same numbers as in the past: That is 01793-705617 or by e-mail at rachelsmith_bpc@hotmail.co.uk Office opening hours will be advised once decided upon. Planning News. If you have access to the internet then all planning applications can be looked at on-line by entering the application number in S/16/0391 The Borough has approved this application to build an additional block of 30 rooms at the Premier Inn behind the Cold Harbour despite our concerns about the access and its proximity to the mini round-a-bout. S/14/1304 We have not yet heard the Inspector s decision on the developer s appeal against the Borough refusal of this application to build 69 houses on the site to the north of the Ermin Street/High Street junction. Community Governance (Parish Boundaries) Review. We await the proposals from the Borough for creating parishes throughout the whole Borough and their suggested changes to existing parish boundaries: These are due in July for review and consultation. Speed Watch. The team carried out an exercise in conjunction with the Police at the beginning of June with the following results:- Location: Lady Lane Number of vehicles: 111 Exceeding 35 mph: 10 Fastest: 40 mph Personal Security. There have recently been cases of cars being broken into in the village. We remind you that you should always lock your car and even if locked do not leave items of value visible within. Similarly at home do not leave ground floor doors or windows open or unlocked. International Air Tattoo 2016. This event will take place over three days, 8 th, 9 th, 10 th July with setting up, dismantling, and aircraft arrivals and departures from 6 th July to 11 th July. This year there will again be traffic management in the village in the form of temporary lane control and a change to traffic lights going onto the bridge from the Cold Harbour round-a-bout. Traffic in the left hand lane approaching the traffic lights will be forced to go down the slip road onto the southbound by-pass and will have an additional green light to facilitate that. Resident s News Letters will be available in the village shop from 1 st July. Brightening up the village. The Village Garden Club have shown us their proposals for a decorative planted area on the north of the High Street/Ermin Street junction and, subject to Borough and Utilities approval, work will start on this soon. The proposal includes a bench seat and hard standing for a wheelchair. The Queen s Birthday Celebrations. Several street parties have been held in the Parish to celebrate Her Majesty s birthday. The village party in High Street was a huge success, attended by over two hundred parishioners, and we appreciate the hard work that went into the planning, and organisation on the day, by a dedicated team of volunteers who are too many to mention by name. We are sure that this example of the community spirit in the village will stand us in good stead as the Borough withdraw more and more from providing basic services such as grass cutting and litter picking and this is left to the parish council to handle with the help of our parishioners.
