MAVERICKS President Rick Townley - Vice President Jack Stanley - Secretary Jane Stanley - Treasurer Mary Barr - User Group Rep Arnie Burr Date January, 2010 Volume 26, No. 1 Editors: Doug & Mary Barr it rained for most of the night but was over by about 9 am. The night time temps stayed warm enough that our heater seldom came on. It rained again Monday night but after we enjoyed our campfire. NEWS! Your dues are due April 1, 2010. Maverick dues are still just $10 per year. Send check payable to Mavericks RV Club to Mary Barr, 10414 Big Horn Court, Stockton, CA 95209. It doesn t really matter what the weather is because we enjoy the gathering and being with some of the Mavericks. It is not the normal routine outing that we are accustomed to but it has its own attractions. For those who love the desert and enjoy boondocking, it s the best. QUARTZSITE Many of the Mavericks have been coming to Quartzsite, AZ for years for the big RV show. We would gather on the west side of town near Dome Rock. The attendance for the RV show was down from the earlier years but may have been more than last year. At least it seemed more crowded in the Big Tent on opening day. This photo is several years old when it was estimated more than 100K rigs were in the area. View of Dome Rock from our campsite. A few years ago we decided to make this an official annual outing. Most of the time the weather has been an attractive part of this winter outing. The weather this year started out nice. It was a little overcast in the morning but warmed up nicely. A couple afternoons there was what I call a breeze, others called it a wind. At any rate, it was not severe and didn t last. On Sunday night 1

ATTENDEES The following members were able to enjoy the Quartzsite 2010 outing: Kathy Dempsey Emily & Arnie Burr Kay & Jon Keith Mary & Doug Barr Trish & Ben Pugh Jane & Jack Stanley Gail & Gordon Ellen GUESTS OUTING TIME Barbara & Gary Del & Tom These guests have been joining us at Quartzsite for several years. We had special guests this year! Terry & Edith Brett from Alberta, Canada joined us. They are full timers and in the area with their uniquely designed Alfa. The Wagonmasters for this outing were Emily and Arnie Burr. Tom and Del Davis arrived first at the Dome Rock area and found us a site that was just right. It was close to our past area but those sites were already taken. We all arrived on Friday the 15 th in order to hit the Big Tent and RV Show on Saturday morning for the opening. The Ellens were not able to camp with us but made it a day trip from nearby. 2

They have this huge tent with vendors hawking everything and anything you can think of that is associated with RVing. Outside the tent are more vendors including a large area with RVs for inspection and sale. Adjacent to the tent is Tyson Wells, a flea market area with vendors selling mostly new and or craft items. There are other large flea markets nearby, The Main Event, selling used items and what I describe as junk. We enjoyed some good meals together and had some nice evenings around the campfire. Some of the guys braved the opeining crowd, others waited until the afternoon or second day. If you haven t ever been there it is a real experience. We all miss George but it was a real pleasure to have Kathy Dempsey with the Mavericks again. 3

Kathy Dempsey The meeting was attended by all those present at our site but due to the schedule change the Ellen s were unable to be there. Thanks to past president Kay Keith for your service to the Mavericks! Meeting The general membership meeting was to be held on Monday but some Mavericks had to depart early so the meeting was moved to 3 pm Sunday. It was followed by hearty hors d oeuvres and then a pot luck. President Rick Townley was unable to attend due to business obligations. The meeting was chaired by VP Jack Stanley. And what a great job he did too! 4

Secretary Jane Stanley read the minutes of the Pismo outing and Treasurer Mary Barr gave the treasurer s report. Both accepted and approved. A motion was made and approved to buy new name badges with our new logo for all Mavericks who have attended the past 3 outings. Other members will receive new badges as they attend outings. These badges will be paid for by the Mavericks Club. Mary Barr was authorized to order the badges from a vendor in Stockton and we should have them by our next outing. They will be similar to our current badges just with our new logo. Doug Barr had obtained some pricing for new club flags. A motion was made to purchase from club funds 25 small flags about the same size as our past flags. The price was estimated at $8 - $9 each. These flags will be sold to members at cost. 2 large flags will be purchased with our new logo to be flown by the President and/or wagonmasters. Doug was directed to proceed with this purchase and they should be available by our next outing too. NEW MEMBERS The Alfa Mavericks would like to welcome the following new members: Roger & Pearl Southern Paradise, CA Hal & Karen Chase Los Gatos, CA SUNSHINE REPORT registration forms from Kay Keith via e- mail. If not you can get them from http://autos.groups.yahoo.com/group/alfasee ya/ under forms. There are also forms at this site for Alfateers repairs. Check it out for yourself at: http://www.rinconcountry.com/ The Burr s, Keith s and Stanley s plan on attending. If anyone else is planning on attending, it was requested you contact them. NEXT OUTING The Mavericks will have an outing at the 49er RV Village May 23-28, 2010. Jack and Jane Stanley will be the Wagonmasters with John and Marllo May as Co- Wagonmasters. This outing was originally planned to be at Jackson Rancheria but issues arose that made that impossible. This RV Park is in the same general area and we will post more information about the area and things to do there when the registration forms are ready in mid-march. http://www.49ervillage.com/ Thankfully there is no Sunshine news to report. NEXT RALLY The 2010 Alfa Users National Rally will be held at Rincon Country West RV Resort in Tucson, AZ. The dates are April 14 21, 2010. The South Loafers are the hosting chapter with Thomas & Christine Upton as Wagonmasters. You should have received 5

FALL OUTING FALL OUTING 2010 Lou and Christine Bono volunteered to be Wagonmasters. Since many Mavericks wanted to try some place other than Pismo they tried to book Morro Bay. They could not get desirable dates so they booked Betabel RV Park in San Juan Bautista. We have had an outing there before and it is an enjoyable area. The dates are September 18 23 (arrive on Saturday depart on Thursday). We will have updated information at the 49er outing. We are still in need of Co-Wagonmasters for our Fall outing. If you can do this please contact VP Stanley as soon as possible. This is the Bono s first time as Wagonmasters and they could use some help. WINTER OUTING Prior to coming to Quartzsite some of the Mavericks stayed at Anza-Borrego State Park. We stayed at s super nice RV park The Springs at Borrego. The Burr s announced that they would like to wagonmaster an outing there in January 2011 prior to Quartzsite. Arnie contacted the park and they do not take group reservations as each reservation must be secured with one night s fee by credit card. So if you want to attend this outing you must make your own reservations. Just advise them when you call that you are in the Arnie Burr group and they will keep us close together. The dates are January 16 20 (arrive the 16 th depart the 21st). Their fee for 5 nights is $295 but you can get a $20 off coupon from their website if you are a first timer. They also have a full refund policy for cancellations 48 hours in advance. So if you think you want to attend, make your reservations knowing you can cancel. Don t wait as they will fill early! We will also post a registration for this outing on our website later in the year. It will include the standard wagonmaster fee. Go to their website and check it out! www.springsatborrego.com The Burr s will be looking for Cowagonmasters. I am hopeful that this idea materializes. There is so much to do and see there! We have reserved the clubhouse for opening night and I know you will enjoy this area. Those who choose will move on to Quartzsite for our annual gathering there. ALFA SEE YA INFO For those Mavericks who have a motorhome you might want to look into joining the FMCA Alfa See Ya Chapter. We (Barr s, Burr s, Stanley s & Townley s) attended their outing at Emerald Desert then the FMCA Western Area Rally at Indio. We had a great time and they are a fun group too. We plan on attending again next year. If you want information on this club contact me or check our website in March. 6
