Koh Samui HALF-DAY TOUR OF THE ISLAND OF KOH SAMUI A tour to discover the island of Koh Samui with its unspoilt nature and its main sights. Big Buddha Temple Big Buddha statue Hin Ta and Hin Yai: Grandmother and Grandfather rocks Coconut tree plantations Coconut harvesting monkeys We start our excursion with a visit to the Big Buddha Temple, located in the northern part of Koh Samui on an islet linked to the main island by a raised road. The Big Buddha Statue was built in 1972 and is 15 metres tall with a splendid backdrop of blue sky and tropical sea. After our visit to the Temple, we stop at a spectacular panoramic viewpoint to observe the surreal rock formations of Hin Ta and Hin Yai below. They are also known as Grandmother and Grandfather rocks and are granite rocks with a rather bizarre shape, as they resemble male and female genitals. They are located on a beach near Lamai and it is believed they bring fertility to whoever touches them. We continue our excursion to some coconut tree plantations, where we have the chance to observe monkeys harvesting coconuts by climbing up the trees. On Koh Samui, monkeys are trained to harvest nuts and this is why it is also known as Coconut Island. After the tour, we return to the port by coach. 01MC 4 1/2 Hours approximately EUR 55.00 EUR 41.25 Koh Samui CRUISE AROUND KOH SAMUI Let us admire the amazing beaches of Koh Samui from the sea aboard a boat that takes us to discover the fantastic coast, with a stop in Koh Tan for a restaurant lunch and some relaxation on a marvellous beach. Inside the main temple (Phra Ubosot), we find the sacred statue of the Emerald Buddha, a green jasper statue 70 cm tall depicting a sitting Buddha adorned with golden robes that are changed three times a year in conjunction with the Thai seasons during a solemn ceremony performed by the Monarch himself. Still inside the 1,900 metres of walls surrounding the complex, we can also observe the Grand Palace, commissioned in 1782 when King Rama I decided to move the capital from Thonburi to Bangkok. * Our excursion continues with a thrilling trip along the Chao Phraya river (the River of Kings) - a fascinating cruise that enables us to admire city life on both banks. Ayutthaya Historical Park: ruins of the old city Bang Pa-In Royal Palace or Summer Palace Wat Mahathat Wat Phra Sri Sanphet Wihan Phra Mongkon Bophit and statue of the seated Buddha Wat Yai Chai Mongkon Buffet lunch PAGE 18

Our thrilling journey back in time starts with the fascinating ruins of the old city forming the so-called Ayutthaya Historical Park and declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1991. While exploring the area, we make out its original urban layout made up of moats, palaces and majestic temples decorated with rows of enigmatic stone Buddha statues. The wealth of pagodas and dwellings and the large number of navigable canals led to it being known as Venice of the East. We then visit the enchanting and important complex of the Bang Pa-In Royal Palace, also known as the Summer Palace, which was built in 1632. The current buildings are the result of a restoration commissioned between 1872 and 1889 by King Chulalongkorn and are eclectic examples of Thai, European and Chinese architecture. The palace is made up of five imposing buildings: a lovely Thai-style pavilion right in the middle of an artificial lake, a twostorey pavilion of European influence for official ceremonies, a pavilion which was once used as residence during the high tide season, a Chinese-style pavilion where the court used to live during the cool rainy season and an observatory located on an islet offering breath-taking views of the surrounding countryside. After a thrilling elephant ride (2 people per animal), we visit the Wat Phra Sri Sanphet, the most important temple in the ancient complex of the Grand Royal Palace made up of three large stupas dating back to the family of King Rama Thibodi II and his father, who both lived here in the 15th century, and which had the same function as Bangkok s Emerald Buddha Temple. Our excursion continues with the Wihan Phra Mongkhon Bophit, where one of the largest seated Buddha statues in the world is located together will smaller statues found in the same area. The vihara (hall) was destroyed in 1767 when the Burmese ransacked Ayutthaya and was rebuilt in the original style in 1956. Finally, we visit the Wat Yai Chai Mongkon, a majestic meditation pagoda built in 1357 by King U Thong and whose remains can be seen from afar. We end our historical excursion with a buffet lunch of Thai specialities in a local restaurant before heading back to the port. There is limited availability of English-language guides.
