ROVING DAY President s Report. I am happy to report our Roving Day was a terrific success with 34 members attending. It was a beautiful, sunny day without a hint of rain. Thank you to the three members that opened their homes to us. First visit was to Michelle and Bruce s home where we spent a very pleasant hour looking at Michelle s orchid collection and newer members picking up some ideas and tips from Michelle who also had some good quality orchids for sale. Morning tea and cake was available and it was great just sitting in the sun enjoying each other s company. We also acquired another new member which was a bonus, two new members for May. Our next visit was to Bill and Robyn s home who welcomed us to their beautiful display of bonsai. It looks like a Nursery but is actually Bill s private collection going back many years and completely filling their back yard and beyond the back fence. Everything was for sale if you had the money and I was pleased to see some of our members buying a bonsai to add to their collection. The newer members showed a lot of interest and a couple also buying a bonsai plant. Next, it was lunchtime so everyone went to the Lion s Park where Bruce, our Secretary, organised a couple of our male members to cook a sausage sizzle for lunch. Not one burnt sausage and plenty of onions. Yum. Many thanks and for making sure everything was left ready for other visitors to the park. Our last stop was at Wayne s home where orchid houses just filled his back yard. Every tiny nook had an orchid in it and no space was wasted. Wayne, as usual, was only too happy to answers questions and give tips to our Novices who showed great interest in every plant. It gave them all something to think about and Open and Novice growers alike get a renewed enthusiasm to do those extra little jobs around the orchid house. Wayne also very kindly gave every Novice a free baby orchid which was very well received. Thank you Wayne. What a kind gesture. To every one of you, thank you for making the day so pleasant. Sylvia Could members please not to water their orchids the day before a Meeting. It makes such a mess. Talk by Mitch on mounting orchids on poly pipe Mitch cuts the 100mm pipe 500mm long and then marks it out into sections (this is best done on paper 500mm by 350mm I will have some templates available at the next meeting) put a mark on the bottom then put marks at 70mm up from both sides, then another mark at 80mm up from these lines, next mark 25mm up from the last line this is your centre line, do this from both ends then draw lines across the paper. Now on the 70mm lines put a mark at 40, 100,170 250, 330, 400 and 460. On the 80mm lines put a mark at 135, 210, 290 and 360. Now draw lines across the paper from the marks on the two 70mm lines and this will show you where to mark the centre line. Holes Sizes:-The first holes on the two 70mm lines are drilled at ¼ inch (these are for the hangers) and the rest of those on the 70 line are ½ inch. The holes on the 80mm line are all ¼ inch. The holes on the centre line are all 1/2inch. Mitch then cut an Advanced Jute Water-Saver Weed Mat (available from Bunnings in Nowra or Batemans Bay) in half and the tied it on over the holes with 30lb fishing line. Now you cover the pipe with 50-70% shade cloth with the grain running along the pipe not around it, he used five screws to attach it to the pipe. He then pushed a 4inch pot into one end but before you do this cut out a piece of shadecloth on each side where you are going to put the screws to hold the pot in place (use this to cover the bottom of the pot to stop filling falling out) as otherwise when you try and drill a hole your drill will grab the shadecloth. Now for the filling Mitch uses 2 parts Bean Bag filling and one part Perlite, once this is in place screw another 4inch pot in the end. Now you are ready to mount your plant. Mitch was very kind to me as he gave me a finished one so if you need to see it let me know and I can either bring it in to a meeting or you can come here to see it. Come Spring and it will have Den falcorostrum mounted on it. Could all the people who won trophies at last years Winter Show and haven t returned them yet please remember to bring them to the June Meeting. Thank you. We have a few members who are not well at the moment, so we wish you all a speedy recovery. Page 5
