History Named for the springs that took on a blue color in certain lights, the community of Blue Springs was organized as part of Jackson County in 1827. The Jackson County Court granted the incorporation of Blue Springs on September 7, 1880, making the City the fourth settlement in the county, predating Kansas City, Missouri. Historic Places Missouri Town 1855 See what a progressive farming community, spread across some 30 sloping acres, looked like in the mid-1800s. Missouri Town 1855 is composed of more than 25 buildings dating from 1820 to 1860. This living history museum uses original structures, furnishings and equipment. Also depicting the 19th Century lifestyles are interpreters in period attire, authentic field and garden crops, and rare livestock breeds. Missouri town is located at 8010 E. Fort Osage Fort Osage functioned as one of the first military outposts and government trade houses in the Louisiana Purchase. Built in 1808, under the direction of William Clark, the Fort s mission was to maintain the political stability in the region through trade and military alliances with the Native American Tribes, particularly the Osage. All the structures have been painstakingly rebuilt. Authentically attired intepreters use living history to provide insight into the daily life in 1812. Fort Osage is loctaed in Sibley, Missouri, 17 miles from Blue Springs. For more information call 816-229- 8980. Chicago & Alton Hotel The hotel was built in 1878 by J.K Parr and is the oldest business building in Blue Springs. (add photo of Burris Old Mill Park, same as before) Historic Places Dillingham-Lewis House Museum Museum In 1906 Morgan Dillingham built a home with two outside architectural designs - late-victorian and Arts and Crafts. The home is open for tours. The grounds are designed with period flowering plants. Open March - December on Sundays from 1:00-4:00 pm. Chicago & Alton Train Depot The original depot in Blue Springs, constructed in 1879, stood on the east side of the railrood tracks near 12th and Main St. It was a two story building and was lost to a fire in the early 1920 s. A new depot was built and is today the last one-story, wood and stucco, Chicago and Alton Train Depot still standing in the state of Missouri. It s now located in Central Park at 10th and Vesper and in the process of being restored. Activities and Recreation Blue Springs Fall Festival This fall festival spans three days in September. The festival is held in Downtown Blue Springs and has over 260 craft and food booths. The parade on Saturday at 10:00 am is the weekend s highlight event. Blue Springs Parks Blue Springs is known for its extensive recreation programs that offer over 200 activities and events annually. There are 20 public parks, covering 384 acres and numerous shelters and playgrounds. There is a Skate Park in Burris Old Mill Park, a Community Garden in Central Park and a Disc Golf Course at Wilbur Young Park. Burr Oak Woods Nature Center Located one mile north of I-70 on State Route 7, this state operated attraction includes a 15,000 square foot nature center and 1,071 acres of prairies, glades, forest, ponds and streams. Burr Oak Woods Conservatin Area offers self-guided nature trails, picnic areas and 3,000 gallon aquarium in the Nature Center making this a fun and educational stop for the entire family. Call 816-228-3766 for more information. Memorial Veterans Way Memorial The Veterans Way Memorial is dedicated to the sacrifice, courage and valor of all veterans who served our nation. The memorial is located at Pink Hill Park, 2715 Park Hill Rd. It serves as a place for personal contemplation or reflection, for veterans and veterans families and friends. Golf Golf facilities are available both in and around Blue Springs. The City of Blue Springs manages Adams Pointe Golf Club, an 18 hole public golf course. Call 816-220-3673 for information. Most merchants are open from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm Tuesday through Friday, and 10:00 am to 4:00 pm on Satruday. Special events held regularly in the Downtown area. Shopping In Blue Springs, there are plenty of shopping areas to fill your bag and hit everyone on your list. The business corridors are Highway 40 and State Route 7. Adams Dairy Landing, located at I-70 and Adams Dairy Pkwy, also serves Blue Springs. Art Public Artworks have been displayed in Blue Springs since 1985. In fact, Blue Springs was the first City in Eastern Jackson County to establish a public art program. On September 6, 2000, a Public Art Commission was establised to enhance the aesthetic appearance of the community. Artworks have been displayed as a result of commissioned artworks or temporary exhibitions. They have been purchased by various groups and gifted to the City. They have also been placed by private organizations, businesses and individuals. Today, Blue Springs enjoys a number of quality public artworks.
