WEST AFRICA, A DYNAMIC CASHEW PRODUCTION AREA WESTERN SAHARA MAURITANIA Among the main cashew production areas, West Africa is the most recent and dynamic in the world. In West Africa, cashew trees have been planted since the 1950 s but it is only during the 1990 s that cashews have become an important crop. Increasing trade between Asia and Africa and strong global demand for cashews have boosted this new sector. As a world leader in global container shipping, MSC aims to deliver these popular nuts to market as fast as possible, ensuring the right transport conditions at all times. Dakar Banjul SENEGAL GAMBIA Bissau GUINEA BISSAU Conakry GUINEA SIERRA LEONE LIBERIA We are present in over 40 countries in Africa including Ivory Coast, Ghana, Togo, Benin, Burkina Faso, Mali, Guinea Bissau and Nigeria, which are amongst the most important exporters of either raw (for the Viet, Thai and Indian markets) and/or processed, shelled cashews (for the European and Asian markets). Our local teams have a strong experience in handling cashews transportation. 4

CASHEW NUT SEASON The timing of the cashew nuts harvest varies from country to country, depending on the climate and on the variety of the nuts. However, there are usually two peak production periods per year (sales periods). The second period represents, in general, the sales period of the leftover stock.
