Parks and Recreation 3180 Bunten Road Duluth, Georgia 30096 (P) 770.814.6981 (F) 770.814.6987 www.duluthga.net Counselor Technician Handbook DULUTH PARKS AND RECREATION DEPARTMENT COUNSELOR TECHNICIAN PROGRAM OBJECTIVE OF THE COUNSELOR TECHNICIAN PROGRAM The Program has been developed to give young people age 13-15 years old the opportunity to acquire leadership skills through involvement in the Duluth Recreation and Parks Department Summer Camp Program. Youth who are selected to be a Counselor Technician should consider it a privilege and an opportunity to develop valuable life and work skills. *All candidates MUST submit two letters of recommendation with their application. Recommendation letters should not be from any relative (mother, father, guardian, grandparents, siblings, etc.). Appropriate references should be teachers, neighbors, family friends, coaches, etc. Candidates chosen to participate in the CT program will be notified by phone. BENEFITS TO THE COUNSELOR Technician The Program will provide young people with valuable work experience in a fun, relaxed atmosphere. Qualified CT candidates will gain experience in the process of applying for a job including completing a job application and interviewing for the position. If successful, CT s may use this experience for future job references and/or scholarship applications. City of Duluth Recreation and Parks Department will incur the transportation fees of CT s on all Summer Day Camp field trips. JOB DESCRIPTION, FUNCTION, AND DUTIES A. Purpose: To assist Summer Camp Counselors in the provision of a quality summer camp program for children ages 4 to 12. B. Function: Works under the general supervision of the Camp Director. C. Duties:
1. Adheres to policies and procedures set forth by the City of Duluth and the Summer Camp Program. 2. Assists Camp Director and Counselors in the supervision of assigned campers. CT s are not allowed to supervise campers alone or to implement disciplinary action toward campers. 3. Assists Counselors in conducting activities. CT s must actively participate in planned activities. 4. Distributes arts and crafts supplies to campers. 5. Distributes equipment when needed and takes supplies to the activity fields. 6. Assists Counselors in the clean up and set up of program areas. 7. Maintains camp equipment and supplies. 8. Reports on program and campers to Counselors/Staff. FINANCIAL REQUIREMENTS There is $25/week for City Residents and $35/week for non residents to participate in the Counselor Technician Program. CT s are responsible for providing their own lunch as well as two snacks each day. HOURS OF WORK Bunten Road Park Summer Day Camp CT s are expected to work Monday through Friday, from 9:00am to 4:00pm. CT s have the option of also working from 8:00am to 3:00pm and/or 8:00am to 5:30pm on any given day. IX. DRESS CODE & CELL PHONES All CT s are required to have a neat and professional appearance that reflects well upon the City of Duluth. The City will provide five staff shirts to be worn everyday. Soffe shorts are not acceptable to wear to summer day camp. Athletic shoes or any rubber-soled shoes with socks must be worn. The following attire is not appropriate: cut-off shorts, clothes with holes, sandals (except during swim time), two-piece swimsuits. Hats may be worn. Earrings are to be worn only in the ears. Neither cell phones, i-pods nor pagers may be used while on duty. Parents should call the Bunten Road Park Recreation Center at 770-814-6981 to speak with a CT on duty. ABSENTEEISM POLICY If a CT cannot work due to illness or other emergency factors, it is mandatory that the absence be reported to the Camp Director at least one hour ahead of
planned work schedule. CT s will be allowed to take limited time off (maximum of three days) to participate in family vacations or other recreational interests as long as the Camp Director or Duluth Recreation and Parks staff is notified at least three days in advance. Two unexcused absences may result in dismissal. TRANSPORTATION Parents/Guardians MUST provide transportation to and from camp. CT s are expected to report to camp at their scheduled time. Camp staff cannot provide transportation for CT s without written permission from a parent/guardian.
