Steam Railway and Alpine Panorama Images: Heinz Stoll & BRB Memorable moments to savour in a setting to simply inspire. Pre Season to Middle Station Planalp Mid-May until 1 st Saturday in June High Season to Rothorn Kulm 1 st Saturday in June until 4 th Sunday in October Further details available under www.brienz-rothorn-bahn.ch The Brienz Rothorn Railway Experience In Brienz, deep in the heart of the Bernese Alps, the Brienz Rothorn Railway smokes and steams its way up the Brienzer Rothorn Mountain just as it did when it opened back in 1892. The railway is unique; it is a steam rack railway using 3 generations of steam locomotives and wagons, with daily service during the summer season. The route climbs 1678 m and presents a breath-taking panorama at the summit Rothorn Kulm. From Lake to Mountain Top The railway commences on the Lake of Brienz in Brienz, 566 m above sea level. In one hour the train steams 7.6 km up the Brienzer Rothorn Alp to the summit station situated at 2244 m. The railway passes romantically through the gardens of Brienz houses, lowland forests and alpine meadows up to the open barren rock faces of the upper mountain reaches. Rewarding views present Brienz, its lake and Interlaken, all in a majestic backdrop of snow-capped Swiss Alps. Brienzer Rothorn = 360 Panorama At 2350 m the uninterrupted vista from the vantage point is simply grandiose. From the Pilatus, Titlis and Rigi in the Central Alps through to the majestic range of the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau in the Bernese Alpine Region a truly 360 panorama awaits. More than 120 Years Steam Tradition On the 31 st October 1891 the first locomotive reached the top of the Brienzer Rothorn. The railway opened to the public on June 16 th 1892 and continued up until the war in 1914. The railway was effectively closed for 16 years until 1931 when service recommenced. Today the Brienz Rothorn Railway is the only non-electrified rack railway in Switzerland with daily steam service. This makes it both unique and imposing in its portrayal of the steam era and attention to detail. 3
