** CALAMA SAN PEDRO DE ATACAMA DAY 01 TRANSFER CALAMA AIRPORT/ HOTEL Meet & Greet at the airport and transfer to the hotel in San Pedro de Atacama. DAY 02 HALF DAY EXCURSION TO THE MOON VALLEY AND TO THE DEATH VALLEY Depart from your Hotel in San Pedro of Atacama and head to the Cordillera de la Sal (Salt Mountain Range), where you will visit the Valley of the Moon ( Valle de la Luna ) that forms part of the National Flamingo Reservation. This unique place is famous for its natural mineral sculptures, one of them being Las Tres Marías (The three Mary s) formed by the wind erosion, resembling a lunar setting. Next, visit Death Valley ( Valle de la Muerte ), a place that invites sand boarders to practice their favorite sport and sandy place with a particular geographical beauty. Its salt formations seem to be sculptures and works of art. Finally, end your trip with a magical sunset at the Kari Viewpoint, one of the highest points of the Cordillera de la Sal (Salt Mountain Range); before returning to your Hotel in San Pedro de Atacama.
DAY 03 HALF DAY ARCHAEOLOGICAL TOUR On this tour, discover the wealth of the Atacama culture or Likan Antai and obtain valuable information as to who they were and how people lived in this area since pre-columbian times until the colonization. Depart from your Hotel in San Pedro de Atacama towards the Andes Mountains, until arriving at the village of Tulor; where buildings resemble a labyrinth of circles, of which each was a dwelling or meeting place. Tulor is the oldest vestige and first human settlement in the Atacama Salt Flat. Tulor was miraculously preserved and is known as the Cradle of the Likan Antai dating back 2,000 years. Next, visit Pukará de Quitor. This stone defensive fortress dates back to the 12th century and was attacked by the Spanish conquistador Francisco de Aguirre and his army of mounted men in 1540, restored in 1981 and then declared a National Monument in 1982. Witness a memorial ceremony of the Fifth centenary anniversary of the discovery of the American continent. Return to your Hotel in San Pedro de Atacama.
DAY 03 HALF DAY EXCURSION TO ATACAMA SALT FLAT AND TOCONAO The National Reservations certainly stand out by their effort to protect the great natural beauty of the flora and fauna that often is in danger of extinction. The Atacama Salt Flat forms part of one of these, concentrating a large number of colonies of flamingos, which makes this tour one of the favorite among visitors. From your Hotel in San Pedro de Atacama, head to the Toconao village, located at an altitude of 2.475 mts. Once in Toconao, stop at the San Lucas Church, made of mud and straw with its typical tower bell. Visit the local handicraft fair very popular for its Alpaca wool and creative crafts made of cactus or volcanic stone. Your journey will continue to the fabulous Atacama Salt Flat, the largest in Chile and one of the 5 largest in the world. Continue along a small path to the Chaxa Lagoon. Be delighted by the different species of pink flamingos; this place is a protected flamingo breeding reservoir and declared Reserva Nacional Los Flamencos (National Reserve). DAY 04 ATACAMA DESSERT EXCURSION TO TATIO GEYSERS AND MACHUCA Deep in the most arid desert of the world, the impressive natural spectacle of steam combined with volcanic magma of the Tatio Geysers is waiting for you to be surprised by its visual performance. Make a visit to Machuca, a small herder s settlement in the North of the country. Pick up at dawn from your Hotel in San Pedro de Atacama. Depart towards the Altiplano, reaching an altitude of 4,320 meters above sea level, to visit The Tatio Geysers; one of the most important geothermal fields in the world. Thanks to the extreme cold temperatures, be witness of different geothermal manifestations and its fumaroles that easily reach 10 meters high and the geysers up to 8 meters. After watching this delightful spectacle, it is time to spend a refreshing dip in a hot pool. Taking the same way back, we stop for a few minutes in the wetlands of Putana, where you can see different species against the backdrop of the Colorado Volcano. Finally, we will make the last stop of the trip in the village of Machuca, a little town where the original Altiplanic architecture is reflected in the St. James Church.
