TM ALASKA & BEYOND 2 EXCEPTIONAL WAYS ABOARD NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC SEA LION, SEA BIRD, QUEST & VENTURE 2017-18

DEAR TRAVELER, Though we have been exploring Alaska and British Columbia for 35+ years, our expedition teams remain captivated by the region s wildness and pristine beauty from the sweeping majesty of Glacier Bay National Park to the strange wonderful undersea, which you ll virtually explore with your onboard undersea specialist and are passionate about sharing both Alaska s and British Columbia s wonders with you. TM And thanks to our trio of nimble expedition ships, the 62-guest National Geographic Sea Lion and Sea Bird, and the brand-new 100-guest National Geographic Quest making its debut in June 2017, we ll take you past the big cruise ships hovering in the deep water, to go far inside the slender fjords and passages. It s here where you ll discover authentic Alaska the bears, the breaching whales and bald eagles, the old-growth forests, the calving glaciers, gorgeous vistas, and fascinating First Nations communities. Lindblad Expeditions and National Geographic have joined forces to further inspire the world through expedition travel. Our collaboration in exploration, research, technology and conservation will provide extraordinary travel experiences and disseminate geographic knowledge around the globe. Both voyages offer an in-depth exploration of this dynamic environment. Treasures of the Inside Passage, our National Geographic Quest & Venture voyage, navigates through the San Juan Islands, the wildlife-rich channels of British Columbia, and the rugged coast of Southeast Alaska. While our Remarkable Journey includes all of the above, plus takes advantage of the rare access we ve been given to enter ancestral Haida lands for a rich and meaningful encounter with an extraordinary culture. Whether this will be your first visit to Alaska or your fifteenth, these immersive itineraries will reward your curiosity and interest in spades delivering everything you ve come to see and do, plus so much more. On behalf of our dedicated expedition teams, we hope you ll choose to visit Alaska and British Columbia with us this coming season. All the best, Sven-Olof Lindblad Cover: Southeast Alaska totem. Jeff Litton; coastal brown bear. Max Seigal This Page: Fairweather mountains. Jeff Mauritzen Ships registry: United States

TREASURES OF THE INSIDE PASSAGE: ALASKA AND BRITISH COLUMBIA More than a century has passed since the grandeur of Glacier Bay and the Inside Passage first captivated naturalist John Muir; and the region s beauty from breathtaking fjords to translucent blue icebergs continues to draw adventurous travelers like a magnet. It s why we ve been exploring there for 35+ years and we re returning once again on our brand-new ship, National Geographic Quest for a wide-ranging expedition of the San Juan & Gulf Islands, British Columbia, iconic Southwest Alaska, and more. With Quest as our home base we ll discover a dazzling array of abundant marine life, ancient forests, and moving First Nation traditions. Kayak in sublimely tranquil bays and inlets, and paddleboard along the verdant coastlines of remote islands. Take in the awe-inspiring landscapes, glaciers and mountains in Misty Fiords and legendary Glacier Bay National Park, which we ll explore for a full day by special permit. Observe unique whale behavior as we search for feeding humpbacks and hunting orcas. Plus, in Alert Bay at the U Mista Cultural Centre traditional performances by the Kwakwaka wakw people offer a glimpse into the human communities of these incredible lands as they have existed for ages....the glories of those months in the ice-world the beautiful and terrible network of crevasses, the clustering pinnacles, the thousand streams ringing and gurgling in azure channels cut in the living body of the glacier, the glorious radiance of the sunbeams falling on crystal dale and hill, the rosy glow of the dawn and sunset, the march of the clouds on the mountains, and the mysterious splendor of the auroras when the nights grow long, etc., etc., etc. But this would require a volume, while here I have only space to add Go to Alaska, go and see. John Muir, Travels in Alaska (1915) Humpback whale breaching, Inside Passage

ALASKA, BRITISH COLUMBIA + A RARE OPPORTUNITY TO VISIT HAIDA GWAII Painted totem in Sitka. A THRILLING ARRAY OF WILDLIFE AND NATURAL WONDERS On this in-depth exploration of Southeast Alaska sail into mist shrouded fjords, see thundering glaciers, and experience the surprisingly colorful undersea through video shot by our undersea specialist. The immersive itinerary gives us a richer opportunity to witness all of the iconic wildlife you came for breaching humpback whales, brown bears stalking shores, majestic bald eagles soaring overhead plus, explore the state s famed natural wonders as well as some out-of-the way regions we ve uncovered over the years here. AND SPECIAL ACCESS TO MYTHIC HAIDA GWAII Though Haida Gwaii, a spectacular archipelago off British Columbia, is known as the islands at the edge of the world, it is well within reach aboard National Geographic Sea Bird and Sea Lion the only U.S. vessels permitted to visit these hallowed islands in over 20 years. The Haida First Nation people are legendary Pacific coast artists and artisans. So, we were initially permitted to visit Haida lands because of our commitment to artisans and the environment in which they create their works, as evidenced by our Artisan Fund (financed by a percentage of sales from onboard Global Galleries). It is indeed a privilege to see their artwork, most strikingly the totems created by master carvers, and to hear the stories woven into the very fibers of Haida regalia, and Haida cultural interpreters will introduce us to a wealth of cultural objects including the silvered totem poles, some 150-200 years old, which line the shore of SGang Gwaay Llnagaay, a legendary UNESCO World Heritage site.
