INDEX OF THE TABANIDAE (DIPTERA) IN CROATIA STJEPAN KRCMAR,* J6ZSEF MAJER,** J6ZSEF MIKUSKA* & PAULA DURBESIc m 'Department of Biology, Faculty of Education University J. J. Strossmayer, L. Jagera 9,31000 Osijek, Croatia "Department of Ecology, and Zoogeography Janus Pannonius University in Pees, Ifjusag u~a 6, 7601 Pees, Hungary '''Department of Zoology, Faculty of Natural Science, University in Zagreb Rooseveltov trg 6,10000 Zagreb, Croatia INTRODUCTION Tabanidae horse flies are a large family of the Diptera order. Horse flies are worldwide known ectoparasite of Mammalia. Through their nutrition the blood meals taking and annoyance they cause the reduction in the livestock production as well as carry various deseases. That is why the horse flies research has, besides scientific, also a much broader meaning. At the same time this was also a reason to write this index of Tabanidae fauna which is based on the results of our research and on the referring data of publications accessible to us so that it provides the basis for further research. MATERIAL AND METHODS This publication is financially supported by Osijecko-baranjska zupanija (Osijek-Baranja District), Osijek This list contains scientific species denominations according to Palearctic Diptera species catalogue CHVALA (1988) as vell as the belonging systematical categories (family, subfamily, genus, subgenus). In the brackets next to the species name are the other names under which that species appear in the literature concerning the horse flies fauna of Croatia. This horse flies index based exclusively on the grown animals (imago). We marked the time of collection for rare species, while for the others we marked only the first and the last date of their appearance in the period Hrvatskl prirodosjovni muzei, Oemelrova I, zagreb, Croatia

2 Krcmar. S.. Majer. J.. Mikuska. J. & DurbeSic. P.: Index of the Tabanidae in Croatia Nat. Croat.. Vol. 5. Suppl.l 3 of vegetation. Zoogeographical distribution of species is caused by the different biology, and especially by the cyclus of development at the ecologicaly different locations. The distribution of every species in Croatia is based on the geographical division of Croatia on East, Middle, Mount Croatia, North Croatian Littoral and South Croatian Littoral (BOGNAR et al 1975). (Fig.!). Those geographical regions where the species were recorded are marked with the sign plus, and those where they have not been recorded so far, with the sign minus. The species with the unknown location have next to the name of the region, also the question mark. Every mentioned species is followed by the data about the region of this collection with information such as the date the location, the place of kepping and the reference on account which the species was included in the list. Every listed species has an ordinal number, and the list was made according to the instructions in the joumal»natura Croatica«. HISTORY OF THE HORSE FLIES FAUNA RESEARCH IN CROATIA The horse flies fauna of Croatia as well as the whole entomofauna in general was in the beginning researched mostly by foreign entomologists (DURBF1;IC, 1984). The first studies dealing with horse flies refer to the Diptera Fauna of Dalmatia (BRAUER, 1880; MlK, 1898; STROBL, 1893, 1898, 1900, 1902 and ZERNY, 1920 according to MOUCHA, 1965). In the 50's and the 60's (this century) there were some researches thanks to which the number of horse flies species recorded on the teritory of Croatia considerably increased (OIVALA, 1972, 1988; COE, 1958, 1960; DANIELOVA, 1961; LECLERCQ, 1960, 1965, 1968, 1976; MAJER, 1985; MAJER & MlKUSKA,1988; MOUCHA, 1959, 1965). The series new species was recorded for Croatia in the 90's (KRCMAR & MIKUSKA, 1994; KRCMAR & MAJER, 1994, KRCMAR, 1994; KRCMAR et al 1995; DURBF1;IC and KRCMAR, 1995; KRcMAR, 1996; KRCMAR and MATSUMURA, 1996). CONCLUSION In the horse flies fauna of Croatia have till today been recorded 76 species which have been devided in 10 or perhaps 11 genera (Table 1). For the species Pangonius micans, Hybomitra aterrima, and Haematopota gallica there are no exact locations and dates of their collection (MoUCHA, 1959; CHVALA et al, 1972). The species Chrysops melicharii is marked in the list with the sign minus. The researches mentioned before only with the»illiric«area, and according to that, it was later aligned with Croatia, as well (KRe>BER, 1932; MOUCHA, 1959; SURCOUF, 1924). But that is not true because this species was collected near Monfalcone in Italy (MIK, 1898; NONVEILLER, 1989). The species Tabanus armeniacus, Tabanus caucasius, Haematopota lambi, Dasyrhamphis algirus and Dasyrhamphis denticornis were mistakenly mentioned as a part of horse flies fauna of Croatia. Mediteranean and temperate continental elements are present in the horse flies fauna of Croatia, and they point at the necessity of the further systematical entomological and zoogeographical research. Ishranom - uzimanjem krvnih obroka i uznemiravanjem uvjetuju smanjenje stoene proizvodnje, a prenose i razlicite bolesti. TIjekom

4 Kremer. S.. Majer. J.. Mikuska. J. & Durbcllc. P.: Index of the Tabanidae in Croatia Nat. Croat.. Vol. 5. '" Table 1.
