One of the Best RC Fields in Washington Being a member of the Emerald City RC Club brings many benefits. We focus on flying, both full scale and models. We host many events throughout the year and provide the mowing and site maintenance services, too! Our aim is to provide a park-like environment you'll be proud to show your relatives, friends and other acquaintances. We do have a few projects on the drafting table that will increase the available parking, relocate the playground, and provide better frequency control. Currently we have nearly 100 active members in the club. We have meetings four times a year to conduct club business, approve flying events, and review safety concerns.
International and Interstate Events Our events span the gamut of model aviation. Since we are a chartered member of AMA, the AMA safety aviation safety rules and judging rules are used for all flying. We have insurance for each member and the flying site, too. Some of our events involver FAI competition, the world wide radio control governing body. We have pilots from the Pacific NW, Canada and other countries participating in our events.
Pilot Training and Public Events We offer free training to those who want help to learn to be a RC pilot. AMA Membership is required, and we recommend using a flight simulator on your PC to get you started. We do have qualified Instructors to assist with building, trimming and flying your models.
Issues new Need Assistance With We have been told to shut down all recreational activities as of July 18 th, 2014 We requested grandfathering of our use, since we have been flying on this same site for over 26 years Other clubs apparently have been granted this who haven t been in operation this long Some advise asking for a legal judge ruling, not a desk opinion for this what s involved? Zoning of our flying field Special Use Permit Understanding the request permit process Understanding what collaterals we need Understanding the costs Determination who owns airspace Neighbors attempting to gain control of our field for duck hunting
Effects of the Field Shutdown Several international events (Pattern, Scale and Open Flying) have been cancelled Scout and other public facing events cannot be scheduled for 2015 Reduction in Club Membership Financial effect cannot donate as much to local charities when legal costs are unknown No new club members No training of new pilots Pilots now flying on other areas of the county Local business affected less foot traffic with events and flying cancelled for an interminable timeframe Local hobby shop sales decrease (100 members not flying)
Your Recommendations? We appreciate the time you have committed t listen to us. What advice do you have for us? We would hope to have our field back in operation by year end. We have made some changes to our rules and coached behavior to minimize flying over other s property, although airspace rights haven t ben determined. We held a Special Event October 3 rd, 4 th and 5 th at our field permit issued by the Snohomish County Fire Marshall s office Passed the Fire Marshal s inspection No complaints 14 Attendees on Friday, 34 on Saturday and 24 on Sunday Tom Roe (Snohomish County Zoning Commissioner) has been called since the event three times, a message was left, no returned call as yet. We think that we should initiate a Special Use Permit request looking for advice from Tom or someone as to what we specifically need for our request. (We are public facing and a good citizen of the community. We re not changing the landscape, not a for-profit business, will not change traffic, or other operating parameters. We re not a business, so costs will be the club member s responsibility)
