OF EVERY MONTH AT GONDOLA PIZZA & STEAKHOUSE 412 E. CAROL ST IN TULLAHOMA EAT AT 6:00 MEETING AT 7:00 EVERYONE WELCOME! Director s Corner Where has the summer gone? Fall starts the day after our Sept Gathering. You have heard that your GWRRA dues are increasing and the organization is changing. I believe the Gold Book and Wing World we receive is worth the dues we pay. Add to that the many discounts we have available and we are definitely ahead financially if you use them. The reorganization goes into effect 1 Jan 2018 and does not really affect us at the Chapter level. They are eliminating the Chapter Ride Educator but that position has been vacant for over a year. The details are still being worked. Since the organization is changing the current officers will have to sign a new memorandum of understanding (MOU) that reflects the changes. Again this should not affect us at the Chapter level but we will have to sign it anyway. Enough of that. Larry, Cathie, Anne and I went to TN-H to capture the Middle TN Traveling plaque. We thought we had it made but then TN-N came with 4 members and the CD from TN-L came. (con t on pg 2) Weekly Dinner Rides, we have been meeting at the restaurant at 6pm Aug 17 Monthly Gathering (Gondola Tullahoma) Aug 24 Boskey s Grill (Willowbrook Golf Course) Aug 31 Ming s (Tullahoma) Sep 7 Margarita s (Winchester) Sep 14 Oak Restaurant (Manchester) Sep 21 Monthly Gathering (Gondola Tullahoma) August 2017 1

(Director s Corner Continued from page 1) Needless to say, we didn t win but we tried. TN-N took the plaque back to Jackson, TN. on 29 Jul, Tom Mobray and I participated in a police escorted ride through Shady Valley. This ride went down to the northern part of Alabama. If you ve never been on a police escorted ride they are really fun because you don t stop at any red lights or stop signs. We had 39 bikes plus 3 motor officers. When I got home Jerry had called and said he and Pat were planning to ride on Sun after church and wanted to know if I wanted to join them (silly question to me I always want to ride). I sent an email to everyone on our area report list (ARL) inviting them to join us. We had 6 bikes/ trikes and 8 riders meet at the Tractor Supply parking lot in Tullahoma. Jerry had a good ride laid out for us from Tullahoma, to Hillsboro, to Viola, to Morrison, to Beech Grove, to Bell Buckle (where we ate at the Bell Buckle Café), then to Wartrace and Normandy before we returned to Tullahoma. Thanks Jerry, I really enjoyed it. I passed out 2 potential Chapter rides at one of our Thur Ride and Dines (R&D). One was to the beach over Columbus Day (F-M). The other was to ride the Blue Ridge Parkway end to end both ways. I have it proposed for Jul 4th week 2018 but could be done any week the Chapter wants to go. But you need to let me know in enough time to make hotel reservations. After our Chapter Gathering, 17 Aug, Anne and I will be traveling to the Kentucky Rally in Cave City. We will be leaving immediately after our Gathering and returning after closing on Sat night. On solar eclipse day (21 Aug) I plan to travel to TN-A2 in Maryville. I plan to leave early enough to catch the full eclipse near Sparta, continue to Maryville and return after their gathering. At the end of Aug we are headed to Wing Ding in Grapevine, TX. Hello Everyone, Come Join us at our gathering or one of our rides. Looking forward to meeting you. I still need volunteers to help me get fresh ideas out to the Chapter. If you are interested or think you may be interested please ask me what these involve. DRESS FOR THE SLIDE NOT FOR THE RIDE You see them a lot during these warmer months. They re on cruisers, sports bikes and, yes, even Gold Wings. You might even be one of them. Who am I talking about? I m talking about all those riders out there in their short sleeved shirts (sometimes tank tops), and fingerless gloves (or no gloves at all). Sometimes they wear jeans but I ve seen them in shorts with sneakers on their feet (I ve seen them in sandals too). Sometimes they wear helmets; sometimes not. Most of the Gold Wing riders do wear helmets; maybe because we can hear the radio and intercom better. I m sure you know the excuses too. There s the, ever popular, It s too hot to wear all that stuff. I hear that one a lot. Then there s, All that stuff is too restrictive. That one s pretty common. I ve even heard, I m a good rider, I m not going to crash. Say whaaaat? I know that being an All The Gear All The Time (ATGATT) rider can be kind of a pain. Yes, riding jackets and pants can be pretty warm; particularly if you re in a lot of traffic. However, the new mesh gear allows substantial air flows and it provides more abrasion protection than jeans and WAY more than you get from a short sleeved shirt or tank top. I know that full-fingered gloves can be restrictive but they aren t as bad as having your hands wrapped in gauze. Try buttoning your shirt with your index and middle fingers wrapped in about 6 layers of gauze if you want to see what restrictive feels like. Yeah, boots can be hot but a stone kicked up by the car in front of you can break your toe. Casts are really hot, itchy too. Lastly, I seriously doubt that crashing their motorcycle is on anyone s Things To Do Today list. Let s see: Go to the Post Office. Drop off the dry cleaning. Crash the bike. Somehow I don t think so. While you may not plan to crash, someone out there probably didn t get that memo. Now, don t get me wrong, I still ride in my Tee shirts and shorts; of course they re UNDER my riding suit. That gives me the benefit of sun/wind/abrasion protection and, when I get where I m going, I can stroll about in my Tee shirt/shorts; swap my boots for a pair of sandals and I m good to go. For what it s worth, I ve worn this kind of gear in temperatures into the upper-90 s for all day rides (coming across the Great Plains) and with the airflow through the suits that are available I was (reasonably) comfortable except when stopped in traffic. Remember, asphalt is unforgiving. It doesn t care that the weather is hot, or how well you can ride. You should always DRESS FOR THE SLIDE, NOT FOR THE RIDE.
