1 COLONEL LIGHT STATUE A CITY WITH A VISION From the arrival of the first settlers in 1836, Adelaide s development has been shaped and steered by forward-thinkers with a clear vision. In 1837, English surveyor Colonel William Light laid out an enlightened city plan designed to create a compact urban capital, divided north and south, and linked by green spaces. The City of Adelaide remains committed to a visionary outlook for South Australia s capital. Our plan is to further enrich Adelaide s lifestyle and boost growth by becoming one of the world s smartest cities with a globallyconnected and opportunity-rich economy. Thanks to his vision, Adelaide boasts the largest urban park system in Australia - with approximately 9.3km 2 of Park Lands, including the magnificent Botanic Gardens, wrapping the City centre in a leafy green belt. 3
2 A CITY WITH WORLD CLASS EDUCATION STATUS Consistently ranked in the top 1% of universities worldwide, the University of Adelaide enjoys an international reputation for cutting-edge research. Along with the City s two other long-established public universities the University of South Australia and Flinders University it is experiencing growing popularity among international students. The additional presence of US-based Carnegie Mellon University, the UK s University College London and Torrens University Australia has created an international university precinct in the heart of the City and further boosted Adelaide s position as an education epicentre. Together, Adelaide s tertiary facilities are contributing to global change in fields such as biotechnology, agriculture, winemaking and IT. For local and overseas students alike, studying in the fifth most liveable city in the world means access to world-class educator programs within a safe and wellconnected cosmopolitan environment, renowned for its vibrant food scene and green spaces. 4

The flagship project in this area is Ten Gigabit City, where the City is collaboratively working to create Australia s first GigCity offering ultra-fast internet speeds of up to 10 gigabit per second. Physical infrastructure remains equally well-supported. Adelaide s International Airport, just 15 minutes from the CBD, continues to announce new direct flight routes with the introduction of flights from China Southern Airlines among the latest. The $200 million SAHMRI (South Australian Medical and Health Research Institute) opened in 2013 and has re-established the area as the largest health and biomedical precinct in the southern hemisphere. Focused on world-leading health research into cancer, premature birth, infectious disease, depression, heart disease, Aboriginal health disparities, diabetes and dementia SAHMRI will soon be joined by the $2.3 billion Royal Adelaide Hospital (RAH) - featuring state-ofthe-art design and leading-edge technology. 16

9 A CITY OF INVESTMENT Adelaide is in the midst of an exciting transformation. Over the past three years, the total value of approved residential developments has exceeded $600 million, half of which are under construction. In 2017 alone, new major public infrastructure projects worth more than $1.5 billion and supporting more than 1,300 jobs will commence in South Australia. These are in addition to the more than 130 infrastructure projects already underway as part of the State Government s $12.1 billion investment over the next four years. This significant financial commitment to sectors including public transport, roads, health, housing, education, water infrastructure and culture will enhance connectivity and accessibility within the City, and further enrich the lifestyle of those who live, work, visit and invest in Adelaide. 19
