Destinations Outlook About Barcelona Barcelona is arguably the most beautiful city of Spain, well known for its dramatic architecture, gothic quarter, parks and museums, world class dining, entertainment and shopping. Barcelona is Located in a privileged position on the northeastern coast of the Iberian Peninsula and the shores of the Mediterranean. The capital of the province of Catalonia, it is unequivocally a Mediterranean city, not only because of its geographic location but also because of its history, tradition, and cultural influences. The documented history of the city dates back to the founding of a Roman colony on its soil during the second century B.C. The Gothic Quarter bears witness to the splendor enjoyed by the city from the 13th to the 15th centuries. The 20th century ushered in widespread urban renewal throughout Barcelona, culminating in its landmark Eixample district, which showcases some of Barcelona s most distinctive Catalán art nouveau, or modernista, buildings. Antoni Gaudí, one of the most eminent architects, designed buildings such as the Casa Milà, the Casa Batlló and the Sagrada Família church, which have become world-famous landmarks.
About Tarragona Tarragona is a port city in northeastern Spain s Catalonia region. Many ancient ruins remain from its time as the Roman colony of Tarraco. The Amfiteatre Romà is a 2nd-century arena facing the Mediterranean, the Necropolis contains Roman tombs, and traces of the Forum stand among the alleys of the walled, medieval Old Town. A walkway along the ramparts, the Passeig Arqueològic, has sweeping views of the city. About Zaragoza Zaragoza is the capital of northeastern Spain's Aragon region. Overlooking the Ebro River in the city center is baroque Nuestra Señora del Pilar basilica, a famous pilgrimage site with a shrine to the Virgin Mary and multiple domes. Mudéjar-style landmarks, combining Islamic and Gothic architecture, include the Aljafería, an 11th-century Moorish palace, and the Cathedral of the Savior, begun in the 12th century.
About Madrid The capital of Spain, located in the heart of the peninsula and right in the center of the Castilian plain 646 meters above sea level, has a population of over three million. A cosmopolitan city, a business center, headquarters for the Public Administration, Government, Spanish Parliament and the home of the Spanish Royal Family, Madrid also plays a major role in both the banking and industrial sectors. Most of its industry is located in the Southern fringe of the city, where important textile, food and metal working factories are clustered. Madrid is characterized by intense cultural and artistic activity and a very lively nightlife. The grand metropolis of Madrid can trace its origins to the times of Arab Emir Mohamed I (852-886), who ordered the construction of a fortress on the left bank of the Manzanares River. Later it became the subject of a dispute between the Christians and Arabs until it was conquered by Alonso VI in the 11th century. At the end of the 17th century, a defensive wall was built for the protection of the new outlying areas, tracing the roads of Segovia, Toledo and Valencia. During the 18th century, under the reign of Carlos III, were designed the great arteries of the city, such as the Paseo del Prado and Paseo las Acacias. At the beginning of the 19th century, Joseph Bonaparte undertook the reform of the Puerta Del Sol and vicinity. The commercial street known as the Gran Vía was built as an east-west avenue at the start of the century. In the 1950's the north-south boulevard called Paseo de la Castellana was extended and modern buildings were erected, housing the major financial institutions. Remainings of the distant past are mainly the Baroque and neoclassical structures of the 17th and 18th centuries, such as the Plaza Mayor (Main Square), the Palacio Real (Royal Palace) and others which will be described later during our guide of the city.
About Merida Mérida, the capital of western Spain's Extremadura region, was founded by the Romans in the 1st century B.C. Remains of the ancient city include the still-used Teatro Romano, which has a double tier of columns rising onstage. The ancient Puente Romano, a 792m bridge spanning the Río Guadiana, adjoins the Alcazaba, a 9th-century Islamic fortress built over Roman walls DAY-BY-DAY ITINERARY Day 1: USA-BARCELONA Spain (Hispania) Overnight transatlantic flight to Barcelona, Spain. Dinner, movie, and breakfast aboard. Day 2: ARRIVAL IN SPAIN Morning arrival in Barcelona. Meeting and assistance at airport and transfer to the hotel. Afternoon meeting with your local host at the hotel lobby. Welcome Dinner at the hotel. Day 3: CITY TOUR OF BARCELONA (Barcino) Buffet Breakfast.
