South Georgia, the Falklands, & the Antarctic Peninsula... 5 unusual journeys Did you know that Antarctica is Earth s driest desert? Or that the cleanest air on the planet is found here? Or that Antarctica holds 70 percent of the planet s fresh water and 91 percent of its ice? So much to learn. Join us for a life-changing exploration of the bottom of the planet aboard one of our favorite small ships.

Our atlas tells us there is no native population on the South Georgia Islands. Tell that to the 200,417 king penguins who call this home. A BRIEF OVERVIEW R. Crusoe offers five journeys to Antarctica and beyond. Which you choose depends on the number of days you have available. Our shortest tour focuses on the Antarctic Peninsula itself, while longer forays include the Falklands and the South Georgia Islands. 1. Earth From the Bottom Up. The Antarctic Peninsula. Ushuaia. Earth s most southerly city and your embarkation point for Antarctica. the ships with other, non-crusoe travelers. Please note: On these journeys, R. Crusoe & Son partners with Silversea Cruises and Ponant Cultural Cruises & Expeditions, and Crusoe travelers share THE LAY OF THE LAND Let s begin with a description of all possible destinations that await us at the bottom of the earth. Knowing what s down there ought to help you decide where you want to go, what you hope to see and do, and how much time you need to do it all. All R. Crusoe departures do include certain destinations. All, for instance, traverse the Drake Passage and cross the Antarctic Convergence. All trace the Antarctic Peninsula, though specific stops vary depending on weather, ice conditions, and other factors. And all depart for Antarctica via Buenos Aires, Argentina, one of our favorite cities and a hub of culture in the Southern Hemisphere. (In fact, we urge you to add a few days to the beginning or end of your voyage to explore the city.) Finally, all of our Antarctic cruises embark and disembark on the mainland in Ushuaia, Argentina. Meet the black-browed albatross and her chick on the Antarctic Peninsula. SOUTH AMERICA Ushuaia Drake Passage South Shetland Islands Falkland Islands South Georgia Islands & South Sandwich Islands Port Stanley Ushuaia, Argentina. A Patagonian city set on the Beagle Channel and surrounded by the Darwin Cordillera and forests of southern beech. Welcome to the world s southernmost city. Falkland Islands. This small archipelago sits in the south Atlantic about 350 miles from the South American coast. Comprised of two main islands, East and West Falkland, and some 700 islets, the total landmass equals that of Ireland. The population of 2,500 here is almost entirely British, with the majority living in the capital town of Port Stanley. The islands support a wide range of wildlife. Deep waters of the surrounding ocean are rich in marine life, which in turn feeds the enormous seabird population of the Falklands. The islands are home to five species of penguin rockhopper, Magellanic, gentoo, king, and macaroni as well as black-browed albatrosses, petrels, Falkland flightless steamer ducks, kelp geese, crested ducks, oystercatchers, night herons, gulls, terns, white-rumped sandpiper, and skuas. Seals also make their homes here. We re likely to see elephant seals (who breed on the Falklands), sea lions, fur seals, and possibly the more rare leopard seals. Porpoises, dolphins, and the occasional whale swim here, too. On West Point Island, walk across moors for a visit to busy rookeries of elegant blackbrowed albatrosses and raucous rockhopper penguins. Grave Cove is a bird-watcher s paradise. Carcass Island has been a sheep farm for 800.585.8555 R.Crusoe & Son www.rcrusoe.com 3 Buenos Aires Neumayer Channel Antarctic Peninsula Weddell Sea

more than a century and is known for its gardens. The island also supports a quite extraordinary avian population. The reason? Carcass Island has neither a cat nor a rat population. As a result, its birds are unusually safe. Keep an eye peeled for black-crowned night herons, known in the Falklands as quarks. Also thriving here: seals and penguins and miles of tussock grass. On Saunders Island, Magellanic and gentoo penguins nest near dramatic beaches. Cormorants and black-browed albatrosses are common along the shore as well. Tiny Victorian Port Stanley returned to its former tranquility following the war of 1983. Sheep graze on the lawn in front of Government House, the administrative headquarters of this tiny outpost of Great Britain. Stanley has an interesting maritime museum as well as the most southerly cathedral in the world. But most fascinating are the hulls of 19th-century sailing ships and the clipper Snow Squall, which lie haphazardly around Stanley Harbor. The hulls are still used for storage. For years, New Island functioned as a base for whaling, as a sheep farm, and for occasional attempts to collect guano. It is considered to be one of the most beautiful islands in the Falklands archipelago as well as having possibly the most diverse range of wildlife in the region. New Island became a nature reserve in 1972. hope to visit research stations and witness scientific activities conducted by a multinational community of scientists who work here. Our daily schedules are determined by weather and ice conditions. Though the expeditionary nature of our voyage makes it impossible to guarantee specific stops, we might visit a number of places. Along the peninsula, possible visits include Petermann Island, where French explorer Dr. Jean-Baptiste Charcot anchored his ship, the Pourquoi-pas?, in 1909. With electric lighting, a motor launch, and fine French wines in her hold, the Pourquoi-pas? was certainly the most luxurious expedition ship to travel the Antarctic waters. But why not? Humpback and minke whales are often sighted around Petermann. Surrounded by mountains and monolithic glaciers, Paradise Bay is known for its prolific wildlife. Its waters are filled with ice floes that are used as rafts by several species of seals. On shore, see the abandoned Argentinian Almirante Brown Research Station, which was destroyed by fire in 1984. We might approach Deception Island through Neptune s Bellows, a channel just wide enough for our ships to navigate. Majestic albatrosses fly away, replaced by southern South Georgia Islands & South Sandwich Islands. Once ravaged by the South Atlantic whaling industry, these rugged, sub-antarctic islands and the surrounding waters are now strictly protected. They harbor abundant numbers of elephant seals, fur seals, and king penguins. Possible visits include the Bay of Isles, home to a massive king penguin rookery; Albatross Island, a paradise for gray-headed, black-browed, light-mantled sooties and wandering albatrosses; Salisbury Plain and St. Andrews Bay, which 250,000-plus king penguins call home; Fortuna Bay, a fjord with braided rivers and plenty of penguins, fur seals, and elephant seals; Gold Harbor, an open expanse where we can also get close to thousands of king penguins; and the town of Grytviken, where Sir Ernest Shackleton is laid to rest in the small cemetery. Antarctic Peninsula. A narrow finger of land that separates the ice-choked waters of the Weddell and Bellinghausen seas, this is the most accessible portion of land on the entire Antarctic continent. The region is sprinkled with islands. Our plan is to make several landings each day. We It s time you got nose to nose with a monster iceberg. 4 800.585.8555 R.Crusoe & Son www.rcrusoe.com

Expedition of 1897-99 led by de Gerlache. The bay is named for Wilhelmina, queen of the Netherlands from 1890 to 1948. The bay is known for its large population of humpback whales and its spectacular scenery. It is surrounded by steep cliffs and an almost perfect pyramidshaped peak that towers over the water. Wendell seal. With no known predators when out of the water, it is abundant throughout Antarctica. fulmars and pintado petrels. Our anchorage? Inside a volcano whose collapsed cone has been filled by rushing ocean water. Take a dip in the thermal waters near Pendulum Cove (something to brag to your grandchildren about). Weather and ice permitting, we hope to travel the Lemaire, Neumeyer, and Errera channels. These beautiful, narrow fjord-like passages thread between the western islands off the coast of the Antarctic Peninsula. The scenery here is monumentally awe-inspiring and nearly indescribable. Steep mountain peaks jut out of the sea on both sides of us, and the waters surrounding our vessel are often choked with icebergs and frequented by crabeater seals. Along the way, keep an eye out for humpback and minke whales, which are known to swim here. Brown Bluff, at the tip of the peninsula, is a paradise of picturesque beaches and glaciers overhung by a brown cliff formed by volcanic tuff. Less than half a mile from the beach stands a volcanic crater that erupted 700,000 years ago, when ice still covered the terrain. After the eruption, melted ice and ash compacted to create the brown rock we see, called hyaloclastite. Brown Bluff is home to 40,000 gentoo and Adélie penguins. Neko Bay is one of the peninsula s most gorgeous spots. Discovered by the Belgian explorer Andrien de Garlache at the end of the 1800s, its mountains, snow, ice, and wildlife combine to create a stunning landscape. Keep an eye out for orcas, whales, penguins, leopard seals, and a wide variety of seabird species. Port Lockroy, on the small Antarctic island of Gaudier, was discovered by Charcot in 1903. Once a relief and repair station for whalers, it later became a research station. Today, a small museum illustrates the researcher s life in Antarctica during the 1950s. Wilhelmina Bay was discovered by the Belgian Antarctic South Shetland Islands. An archipelago just north of the Antarctic Peninsula. Several countries maintain research stations here, mainly on King George Island. In this incredible region, Sir Ernest Shackleton s ship, Endurance, was stranded in 1916. From here, he and five of his men undertook a thousand-mile rescue mission on a 20-foot whaleboat to secure help. Possible destinations in the South Shetlands includes Elephant Island and Half Moon Island, both magnets for Antarctica s seabird population. Drake Passage. Named for the 16th-century English seaman Sir Francis Drake, this is a deep waterway spanning 600 miles between the southern tip of South America and the South Shetland Islands. If the water is calm, stroll the decks, and take the opportunity to see and photograph wandering and black-browed albatrosses, sooty shearwaters, and black-chinned petrels. Onboard naturalists identify the species overhead. During our cruise through the Drake Passage, we encounter the Antarctic Convergence. Here the cold waters of the Antarctic meet warmer waters from the north. This intermixing creates weather Sir Ernest Shackleton, famed 20th-century Antarctic explorer, and his trusty but doomed ship, Endurance. variations in and results in a concentration of marine plant life because of its higher-than-average nutrients. Look for whales and seals and innumerable seabirds that frequent the waters around the Convergence. 800.585.8555 R.Crusoe & Son www.rcrusoe.com 5

About the Silver Explorer. A purpose-built expedition ship unlike any other, the Silver Explorer, a member of the Silversea Expeditions fleet, was designed specifically for navigating waters in some of the world s most remote destinations, including Antarctica. The 6,072-ton vessel boasts a strengthened hull with a Lloyd s Register ice-class notation (1A) for passenger ships. With her eight Zodiac boats, the passengers can access even the most off-the-beaten-path destinations. The ship, refurbished from stern to bow in 2008, carries 132 guests in 66 ocean-view cabins. Many of the staterooms feature private verandas, and all have flat-screen televisions and en-suite bathrooms. Accommodations range from 180 to 675 square feet, among the largest cabins of any expedition ship. A convivial, cosmopolitan ambience is the rule aboard the Silver Explorer. The ship boasts amenities often found only on larger ships, including a spacious library with an Internet café, boutique shopping, a full-service spa, a beauty salon, a fitness center with sauna, and two top-deck whirlpools. 3 For more information call R.
