Potamon Dam
Energy exploitation of the Potamon Dam (Pumped Storage Hybrid Power Station 50MW)
How does the HPS work The pumped-storage unit absorbs the wind production and the restricted by the law supplementary energy from the grid (when the available wind power is low) to elevate water from the lower reservoir and store it to the upper reservoir. The water turbine gives an agreed electricity production for a constant (8 h-during the peak demand hours) time period every day.
Project description (Contractor TERNA ENERGY SA, after International Request of Proposals) RES Production Units (2 Wind Parks with total installed power 81 MW, sited in the Municipality of Sitia) Water Turbine Production Units (3 reversible fixed speed units with Production 2x25 MW = 50 MW (+1 x25 MW backup) and Pumping 3x36 MW = 108 MW, sited near the Dam in the Municipality of Amari) Pump station (10 variable speed pumps 10x3, 216 MW = 32,16 MW, sited near the Dam, Municipality of Amari) Upper storage reservoir (Reservoir with capacity of 1,15 mill m 3, sited in the Municipality of Rethymno) Lower storage reservoir (Reservoir of the Dam of Potamon with capacity 22,5 mill m 3 sited in the Municipality of Amari) Guaranteed generated capacity : 50 MW Power of storage units ranges: FROM 1 x 36MW + 10 x 3,216MW = 68,16 MW TO 3 x 36MW + 10 x 3,216MW = 140,16MW. Project Budget: 230. 000.000. Current statement: Supply License from regulatory Authority of Energy (RAE).
