PRESIDENTIAL OBSERVATION The Bharatiya Janata Party was founded in April 1980. The year 2005 is the Party s Silver Jubilee Year. One of the major projects to be undertaken during this year is publication of official documents of the Party. As a major political Party of the country, the BJP is accountable to the people, to students and scholars, and to history for providing an official account of evolution of the Party. The foot prints of evolution of the Party may be seen in these documents, which would also reflect the country s developing political, economic and social scenario. A Committee has been set up to implement this Party Documents Project. Shri Vishnukant Shastri, a senior leader of the party and former Governor of Uttar Pradesh heads this Committee* and Shri Dina Nath Mishra, journalist and ex-m.p., is the Working Chairman who has been coordinating the multifarious activities relating to documentation and publication. While introducing these volumes I fondly remember Shri Rajendra Sharma who served as our parliamentary party secretary for several decades. It was he who had first conceived of documenting the Jana Sangh s history. He used to keep records methodically and meticulously. Jana Sangh Documents were produced in ten volumes. Though the Silver Jubilee volumes will focus mainly on the BJP days, an attempt would simultaneously be made to update the Jana Sangh documents, and also include the post-emergency Janata Party phase so as to maintain the continuum. 28 March, 2005 (L.K. Advani) President BJP * Unfortunately Shastriji has passed away on 17 April, 2005 Untitled-4 7
