H ISTORY The hotel has a rich history going back to 1818. The history of the hotel is closely tied to the development of the seaside trend, At that time, there was great interest in the healing powers of seawater against conditions such as rheumatism, nervous disorders and obesity. In 1885, inspired by well-known resorts in Belgium and France, the Kurhaus was opened on the site of the old bathhouse, and it also became known as a prime location to dine and entertain. Later, the Kurhaus expanded to become a hotel and quickly became the place to stay for many notable guests. Famous people such as Marlene Dietrich, Winston Churchill and Helmut Kohl found their way to Scheveningen and were asked to sign the guest book. A unique book was thus created, with the signatures being illustrated by renowned artists such as Jan Toorop, Jacob Maris and Jozef Israels. However, the Rolling Stones have never signed the book. The concert in 1964 was abandoned after 10 minutes when the fans enthusiasm got out of hand. The band members were requested to get into the cars and go and stay in another hotel. In 1972 the doors of the Kurhaus closed for a number of years for a fundamental renovation. Only the central part was preserved, while the wings were completely rebuilt. The renovation was aimed at creating modern rooms and conference rooms, but astonishingly, the original healing function was forgotten. In 2014, the Kurhaus became part of the Amrâth Hotels Group and the new owner is very keen to honour the rich tradition of the building. For this reason, the guestbook was dusted off and set out once again for prominent guests. The once bustling restaurant, which had stood empty for years, underwent refurbishment and was reopened under the name of Waves at the Kurhaus. Perhaps the most important thing is that the building is once again going to become a place for healing. The realisation of a luxury Spa and Wellness Centre restores the meaning of the name of the Kurhaus.
