COMNAVSURFPAC visited ship. Embarked Tigers, invited guests of crewmen, for the transit to San Diego, CA, Conducted Amphibious Training Readiness Evaluation, where the ship's readiness for amphibious training was briefly evaluated. Underway for San Diego, CA, While enroute, ship conducted Operational Propulsion Plant Readiness Examination (OPPRE), Returned to San Diego from deployment. Ship got underway for two days of training in preparation for Amphibious Refresher Training (AMPHIBREFTRA), Underway for Amphibious Refresher Training (AMPHIBREFTRA). The ship conducted well deck and boat deck operations, launching various types of landing craft while being evaluated by PHIBREFTRA Observers, USS CLEVELAND experienced a casualty in the hydraulic system controlling the opening and closing of the stern gate while at anchor off Silver Strand beach, Coronado, CA. While manning up the Sea and Anchor Detail in preparations for getting underway, high winds and large swells resulted in the breaking of the starboard stern gate arm, The ship proceeded into port, mooring starboard side to Pier 5 at 1400. At this time the prospective Executive Officer, LCDR Jeffrey Day, arrived onboard,

Moored Seal Beach, CA at 0815. Commenced ammunition offload. Returned to San Diego, CA for PRAV following successful completion of ammo offload. Commander, Amphibious Group Eastern Pacific visited the ship. Ship was in a Pierside Restricted Availability (PRAV), during which repairs and renovation were effected shipwide. The stern gate was removed, repaired, and reinstalled, various spaces had deckwork renovation. Renovation was also performed on the ship's engines and boiler fronts. Major space habitability renovation began. The following are major items of interest: Installed new dryers and 3 new presses in the ship's laundry. Installed automatic deep fat fryer extinguishing system (range guard) in flag galley, bake shop, EDF galley and CPO galley. Resurfaced the flight deck. Overhauled the pumps and motors in anchor windlass. Painted ship's sides, catwalks, weather decks and main mast. Flame sprayed well deck overhead and resurfaced well deck. Overhauled all CHT tanks. Installed new bake shop ovens, new deep fat fryers in EDF Galley and CPO mess, and new vegetable peeler in vegetable preparation room and two new steam pressure ovens in the EDF Galley. Prepared, painted and overhauled all magazines, plats, and special weapons stowage spaces. 3

Conducted a second fast cruise to test main equipments for seaworthiness. Underway in Southern California Operating Area (SOCAL OPAREA) for Training and Readiness Evaluation (TRE) in preparation for interim Refresher Training, Stern Gate reinstalled, Underway for training in preparation for Amphibious Refresher Training (REFTRA). Inport San Diego. Commenced renovation of second set of crew heads, Underway SOCAL for Refresher Training, Week ONE. Ship experienced collision with USS SHASTA (AE 33) while conducting Underway Replenishment operations. Port side was damaged, with small punctures in hull well above the water line, and approximately 20 feet of the starboard catwalk damaged beyond repair. The ship was judged capable of continuing operations following an inspection by the Commanding Officer, Fleet Training Group. Inport San Diego. Shipyard workers sanded, primed, painted and patched hull damage, removed damaged portions of port catwalk, in preparation for future repairs. Underway SOCAL for Refresher Training, Week TWO. Ship passed REFTRA with a grade of SATISFACTORY in all areas except Major Conflagration. 4

NIS Investigation initiated. Remained pierside San Diego while repairs to the port main engine reduction gears were in progress. Prepared, painted and renovated all 38 Marine Troop spaces, Overhauled three pallet conveyors. Overhauled the pumps and motors associated with the B and A crane. Established a fully functional sail locker,
