T HE M ETROPOLITAN M USEUM OF A RT Dear Members and Friends of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, When Venice ruled the Adriatic Sea, many ports along the coast prospered and a new civilization was born out of local artistic and architectural traditions. These cities were enriched by the influence of La Serenissima, while many of their surviving monuments testified to ancient Rome s greatness. As we explore these fascinating cities, we will discover the pleasures for which this coast is famous, on a journey with a distinctive Italian flavor. We are delighted that Olivier Bernier, erudite scholar and lecturer at the Metropolitan Museum, will accompany us on this voyage. His previous lectures on Italian art and architecture have received rave views. Also joining us will be eminent Irish landscape architect and garden author Patrick Bowe. Board the storied Sea Cloud II in Venice and cruise to the historic towns that were once centers of the Greco-Roman, Byzantine, and Renaissance worlds. Call at Ravenna, whose dazzling mosaics blend the best of Roman décor with the splendor of the Byzantine court. From Ancona we will visit the walled city of Urbino, whose Ducal Palace embodies the best of the early Renaissance, and see the National Gallery of the Marche s important art collections. Venice Ravenna Ancona Gulf of Venice ITALY Tyrrhenian Sea CROATIA Adriatic Sea Brindisi MONTENEGRO Dubrovnik Kotor Ionian Sea Arriving in Dubrovnik, the Pearl of the Adriatic, from the sea is an experience not to be missed. The Middle Ages survive in the charming little city of Kotor and enchanting Lecce. Delight in a leisurely day at sea as we cruise to the Sicilian gem that is Syracuse. Life aboard Sea Cloud II has no comparison. Her friendly staff, luxurious accommodations, and fine dining create an old-world ambiance of casual elegance. Enjoy moments of quiet pleasure when her sails are raised by hand. An optional prelude in Venice and an optional postlude in Malta are offered. I hope you will join us on this stellar journey. Sincerely, SICILY Valletta MALTA Syracuse Mediterranean Sea Emily K. Rafferty President

A DRIATIC O DYSSEY Venetian Splendors & Byzantine Mosaics Aboard Sea Cloud II October 14 to 23, 2015 St. Mark s Basilica, Venice NEW YORK Wednesday, October 14 Depart New York on an overnight flight to Venice. VENICE, ITALY SEA CLOUD II Thursday, October 15 Arrive this morning in Venice. Following lunch at Hotel Europa & Regina, overlooking the Grand Canal, enjoy a sightseeing cruise through the canals, concluding at the elegant Sea Cloud II. Gather on deck for a bon voyage glass of champagne as we sail past the Doge s Palace and the Church of San Giorgio Maggiore. RAVENNA, ITALY Friday, October 16 This afternoon we arrive in Ravenna, the capital of the Western Roman Empire from 402 to 476, and that of a Byzantine province thereafter. The glittering mosaics at the Mausoleum of Galla Placidia and the churches of San Vitale, Sant Apollinare Nuovo, and Sant Apollinare in Classe depict the splendid courts of Rome and Byzantium and the transition between these two empires. Return to Sea Cloud II in the late afternoon. Tonight, join the captain for a welcome reception followed by dinner. View of Urbino ANCONA, ITALY Saturday, October 17 Sea Cloud II From Ancona, you may choose to explore the medieval walled city of Urbino, nestled on a picturesque hillside, and visit the Ducal Palace which houses the National Gallery of the Marche, one of the most important collections of Renaissance art in the world. Alternatively, visit Villa Imperiale. Located a few miles from Pesaro, Villa Imperiale is nestled in the park of Colle San Bartolo and was built in two different phases of construction in the 15th and 16th centuries. Return to Sea Cloud II for lunch and afternoon lectures as we depart Italy. A DRIATIC O DYSSEY

AT SEA Wednesday, October 21 Experience the thrill of sailing during a relaxed day at sea. As Sea Cloud II cruises the southern Italian coast, watch as the crew practices the art of trimming the sails by hand, or perhaps settle into a comfortable deck chair with a favorite book. SYRACUSE (SICILY), ITALY Thursday, October 22 Dubrovnik DUBROVNIK, CROATIA Sunday, October 18 After a leisurely morning sail and lunch on board, arrive in the spectacular walled city of Dubrovnik. Discover the influence of the Venetian architects in the medieval city s main artery, Placa. View ancient manuscripts at the Franciscan Library, as well as the paintings in the Dominican and Franciscan Monasteries and Rector s Palace. Return to Sea Cloud II for tea and an onboard performance by a folkloric a capella choir. KOTOR, MONTENEGRO Monday, October 19 This morning we explore Syracuse, one of the most important cities in antiquity. Discover the ancient Greek and Roman theaters in the Archaeological Zone and see the cathedral in the Old Town, built upon the ruins of the Temple of Athena.View Caravaggio s Burial of St. Lucy, housed in the church of Santa Lucia alla Badia on the Piazza Duomo. We are invited for a private visit to the Palazzo Beneventeno del Bosco. Toast a memorable voyage tonight, at the captain s farewell dinner. Montenegro, for centuries a nest of brigands where Lord Byron was once kidnapped, is today both peaceful and scenic. Spend the morning in Kotor, still girded by its original walls. Its monuments date back to the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, and its Romanesque churches are perfect examples of that simple but majestic style. Alternatively, you may wish to join an excursion to the Our Lady of the Rocks Church with its 17th-century frescoes, located on an island off the coast of Perast. Return to the ship for lunch on deck as we sail out of the Gulf of Kotor. BRINDISI, ITALY Tuesday, October 20 Step ashore in the port of Brindisi for a drive to Lecce. Pass ancient olive groves en route to this exuberantly baroque city, filled with ornamented churches, palaces, and houses carved from the honey-colored local stone. Often used for period movies, Lecce resembles an opera set. See the restored 16th-century cathedral and the adjoining archbishop s palace, seminary, and Church of Santa Croce. Façade of Basilica di Santa Croce, Lecce VALLETTA, MALTA Friday, October 23 Disembark in Valletta for the return flights home or continue on the optional postlude.
