The key gal is t help curse members develp a persnal thery, framewrk, synthesis and sme "tls" suitable t supprt their prfessinal practice. Curse Gals: Upn cmpletin f this curse, the student will: Understand and discuss a biblical and thelgical understanding f grups and their rle in therapy. Be aware f the majr theretical appraches t grup cunseling. Understand the dynamics f grup frmatin and prcess. Utilize skills relevant t cnducting grup cunseling Experience the dynamics f a grup by participating in and leading grup experiences. Curse Schedule: After tw-three sessins f class, yu will be required t attend class frm apprximately 7:00 t 9:00 with a 75- minute therapy grup meeting either befre r after class r sme ther evening in the week (exact schedule will be determined during the first class sessin). Students are required t participate as a client in an 8-week grup with a cntracted therapist fr 8 weeks f the semester. N reprt will be made t the prfessr ther than affirmatin that each student has "fully participated" accrding t standards agreed upn by the therapy grup. Full participatin in the class prcess (10%). This includes regular participatin in class discussin and being part f a grup that leads the class in a cunseling experience, presenting ne f the appraches t grup cunseling.

Please nte that the schedule prvides fr 10 papers beginning in the secnd week, hwever, each student nly needs t cmplete 5 f these 3-page papers. Students shuld be familiar enugh with the material t meaningfully cntribute t class sessins n a weekly basis. 3. Viewing f the vide Evlutin f a Grup and cmpletin f the wrkbk (10%). View the vide in its entirety and fully cmplete the wrkbk n yur wn; the vide will als be shwn in class. 4. Grup presentatin (15%). With a grup f peers, develp and present a 75-minute sessin n a tpic f yur chice. Yu shuld supprt the presentatin by ntes fr each class member alng with a bibligraphy f 6-8 useful titles. The ntes may be psted t the class flder fr class members t dwnlad. Grup sessins may be chsen frm the fllwing categries. Tpics are suggestive: Church Applicatins: Ptential and bundaries fr grup cunseling in a lcal church. Integrating cunseling thery and the Christian wrldview in a grup cunseling setting. Twards an integrated mdel fr grup cunseling in a Christian cntext. Specific Grup Applicatins Grup cunseling with children Grup cunseling with adlescents Grup cunseling with adults (Five grups will be frmed during the first sessin and retained thrughut the semester as a basic element in the class prcess.) 5. Cllateral Reading (10%). Drawing frm at least five self-selected surces, read 700 pages in the area f grup cunseling and/r grup prcess. Submit a 4-6 page lg f this reading. Give special attentin t assembling resurces that may be helpful in yur wrk with grups. 6. Participatin in Grup Cunseling Sessins (N grade but required t pass the class). Participate as a client in eight (1.25 hr) grup cunseling sessins. Grup Cunseling Sessins A trained therapist will lead grup cunseling sessins. Each grup leader will set the time. Sessins will generally be in the evening after 5. These times shuld be finalized by the first class sessin. Yu will nte that there are 8 grup sessins thrughut the semester. Please nte that there is a $75 lab fee fr this experience. The class schedule will be mdified t reflect this change. 7. Leading Grup Cunseling Sessins (15%). Make arrangements fr and lead a grup fr a minimum f 4 (1 hr.) grup therapy sessins. Class members may pair tgether t arrange and c-lead the sessins. Details and supervisin plans t be discussed in class. Each class member will then write a paper that evaluates and analyzes the grup. Papers shuld include the fllwing: Cnceptualize the dynamics in the grup (e.g. grup develpment stages), the ebb and flw, critical turning pints. Bring in any insights frm the texts that illuminates the prcess: Characteristics f grup at each stage f develpment Member interactin Leader-member relatins Leader-c-leader dynamics Members assessment f the grup Leader s assessment f the grup Grup utcmes. Cnsideratins might include the fllwing: What were the grup s utcmes?

Draw upn theretical appraches (e.g. Adler, TA) t assist yu in understanding and explaining the grup prcess and utcmes and as a basis fr yu evaluatin. These interactins fall under the umbrella f cnfidentiality and members will be expected t abide by this ethical standard. All papers shuld have yur name and yur SPO number n them. All written material shuld cnfrm t style and frm set frth in the Publicatin Manual fr the American Psychlgical Assciatin, 5 th ed. Als, all written material shuld be prduced with a standard 12-pint fnt, typed, duble-spaced with a ne-inch margin. Grades fr written material will be partially based n quality f writing, clarity f thught, and lgical develpment. All written material is t be submitted in printed frm. Any materials submitted email will receive n written cmments, but will nt result in grade reductin. Students shuld submit written material n time; late papers will receive n written cmments and the grade will be reduced.
