1 THOMAS NEAL S WAREHOUSE 21,000 sq ft (1,950 sq m) Flagship Retail Opportunity
HISTORY OF THE AREA Designed by Thomas Neal in the early 1690s to attract the fashionable aristocrats to live and work, this matrix of streets was originally laid out in the star-shaped design as a clever way to maximise land value. The first inhabitants of respectable gentleman, lawyers and prosperous tradesmen were succeeded in the mid 1700s by ironmongers, woodcarvers, straw hat manufacturers, pork butchers, watch repairers, wig makers, book sellers and several public houses. The cobbled streets and laneways also became home to the capital s most infamous gin houses and drinking establishments. At one point a public house was located on every corner of the Dial. By the mid-18th Century, Seven Dials had become a notorious and feared rookery (slum) in London with numerous incidents of mob violence. In 1773 the famous Sundial Pillar at the centre of the development was removed by officials in an attempt to rid the mob of their meeting place. More recently Seven Dials has been home to Monty Python as well as the Beatles manager Brian Epstein. Since then the area has continued to develop into the unique international shopping and dining destination it is today. Seven Dials Now: Over 150 shops Over 50 cafés, restaurants and bars 2 luxury hotels (200 rooms) 5 theatres 2 private members clubs Large media and technology office population Affluent residential population
THE STRANGER WHO FINDS HIMSELF IN THE DIALS FOR THE FIRST TIME... AT THE ENTRANCE OF SEVEN OBSCURE PASSAGES, UNCERTAIN WHICH TO TAKE, WILL SEE ENOUGH AROUND HIM TO KEEP HIS CURIOSITY AWAKE FOR NO INCONSIDERABLE TIME... Charles Dickens, 1836
