The key gal is t help curse members develp a persnal thery, framewrk, synthesis, and a set f "tls" suitable t supprt their prfessinal practice. The class will incrprate lecture, vide demnstratins f varius aspects f grup wrk, and interactive experiences. Curse Gals: Upn cmpletin f this curse, yu will: Understand and discuss a biblical and thelgical understanding f grups and their rle in therapy. Be aware f the majr theretical appraches t grup cunseling. Understand the dynamics f grup frmatin and prcess. Acquire skills relevant t cnducting grup cunseling. Experience the dynamics f a grup by participating in and leading grup experiences. Curse Schedule: Classes will meet Wednesdays in plenary sessin frm 8-10:45 AM. Students are required t participate as a client in an 8-week grup with a cntracted therapist fr 8 weeks f the semester. During thse weeks, class will run frm 8-10 AM. Grup therapy sessins will begin [DATE], and will be mst likely be in the evenings. N reprt will be made t the prfessr ther than affirmatin that each student has "fully participated" accrding t standards agreed upn by the therapy grup. CO655A Spring 2008 p. 2 Curse Requirements: 1. Full participatin in the class prcess (10%). This includes regular participatin in class discussin and being part f a grup that leads the class in a cunseling experience, presenting ne f the appraches t grup cunseling. 2. Presentatin f five respnse/evaluatin papers n assigned readings frm the text (20%). In this assignment, the student shuld nt simply repeat what the text says. Rather, the student shuld interact with the material. Such interactin wuld include the fllwing suggestive areas: The student s cgnitive and emtinal reactin t the material; any agreement r disagreements with the authr s psitin; any new insights gained frm the material; behaviral respnses t the material (that is, what the student might d differently as a result f reading the material); Christian respnse t the material; hw the material crrespnds t r differs frm the student s experience; and hw the material might be meaningfully applied within a grup cntext. C grade paper - Largely repeats in new frm what was read, withut any meaningful interactin. B grade paper - Prvides interactin arund at least a cuple f the areas mentined abve in italics r similar areas f cnsideratin. A grade paper - Prvides significant interactin with the material including 4 r mre f the areas mentined abve in italics. Please nte that the schedule prvides fr 10 papers beginning in the secnd week, hwever, each student nly needs t cmplete 5 f these 3-page papers. Students shuld be familiar enugh with the material t meaningfully cntribute t class sessins n a weekly basis. 3. Viewing f the vide Grups in Actin and cmpletin f the wrkbk (10%). View the vide in its entirety and fully cmplete the wrkbk n yur wn; the vide will als be shwn in class. Participate actively in class discussins f this assignment. 4. Cllateral Reading (10%). Drawing frm at least five self-selected surces, read 700 pages in the area f grup cunseling and/r grup prcess. (This reading is in additin t the class texts.) Submit a lg f this reading, with full bibligraphic references and ntatins f the number f pages read, at the last class sessin. Give special attentin t assembling resurces that may be helpful in yur wrk with grups. 5. Participatin in Grup Cunseling Sessins (N grade but required t pass the class). Participate as a client in eight (1.25 hr) grup cunseling sessins. Grup Cunseling Sessins A trained therapist will lead grup cunseling sessins. Each grup leader will set the time. Sessins will generally be in the evening after 5. These times shuld be finalized in the first tw class sessins. Yu will nte that there are 8 grup sessins thrughut the semester. Please nte that there is a $75 lab fee fr this experience. The class schedule will be mdified t reflect this change. 6. Leading Grup Cunseling Sessins (20%). Optin A. Make arrangements fr and lead a psych-educatinal grup fr a minimum f 4 (1 hr.) sessins. Class members may pair tgether t arrange and c-lead the sessins. Each class member will then write a paper that evaluates and analyzes the grup. Papers shuld include a cnsideratin f the fllwing where applicable:

Describe yur recruitment f the grup Cnceptualize the dynamics in the grup (e.g. grup develpment stages), the ebb and flw, critical turning pints. Bring in any insights frm the texts that illuminate the prcess: Characteristics f grup at each stage f develpment Member interactin Leader-member relatins Leader-c-leader dynamics Members assessment f the grup Leader s assessment f the grup Grup utcmes. Cnsideratins might include the fllwing: What were the grup s utcmes? Hw d yu explain the utcmes? Draw upn theretical cnsideratins t assist yu in understanding and explaining the grup prcess and utcmes and as a basis fr yur evaluatin A week by week summary shuld nt be dne and the paper shuld nt fcus n persnal issues raised by participants in the grup. Optin 2. As an alternate t this prject, class members may cmplete a detailed prpsal fr an 8-sessin psycheducatin grup. All f these interactins fall under the umbrella f cnfidentiality, and members will be expected t abide by this ethical standard. Feedback Timely: Fr assessments f student wrk during the curse f the academic term, the expectatin f timely feedback is met when students have their wrk marked, graded, and returned within ne week f its submissin. Mrever, when assignment B builds n assignment A, assignment A shuld be returned befre assignment B falls due. Lnger assignments are ften due at the end f term, and are nt subject t this definitin.
