3 About Hamburg Hamburg is one of the biggest cities in Germany with 1.8 million inhabitants. Although there are many people living in it, it has retained its flair for centuries. When you arrive, you will see the typical houses made out of red bricks. Beside them you will also find a lot of mansions. In Hamburg lives most of Germany s millionaires. And between these different types of houses you will see again and again channels of the small river Alster through which you can paddle a canoe, pedalo or stand-up-paddleboard. From this side you will get a different view of the beauty of Hamburg. From the early 15th century on, Hamburg grew by being the Gate to the World. Here ships from all over the far and near continents arrived to bring exotic goods like coffee and spices to northern and eastern Europe. The Speicherstadt ( warehouse city ) was the area in Hamburg where all these goods have been stored through the centuries, before being transported to their final destination. This part of Hamburg became a UNESCO world heritage site in 2015 and just in this area we will dance outdoors on Saturday afternoon, in the center of the traditional harbour. Just a step away, in the last 10 years the quarter of the Harbour City was developed. In the January of 2017 one of the greatest building opened: the Elbphilharmony shortly called: the Elbphi. And if you want to know more about this area and have a look around the harbour, the harbour city and the warehouse city from above, join the daytime activity Elbphi & Harbour City Walk 1. We have limited tickets reserved for the visit of the Plaza of the Elbphi. Just a hop away from the Speicherstadt, there is the 3 rd biggest harbour of Europe at the river Elbe. Along the river there are several ferries going from the city center at Landungsbrücken to the beach of Övelgonne and further. There you can have a fantastic view to the harbour with its big ships and the container terminals. These ferries are included to the public transportation. If want to takes great pictures, join the daytime activity Harbour Ferry Hopping 2. In the 1920s and 1930s the well know Swing Kids lived in the city center of Hamburg. The daytime activity Swing-Kids-History- Walk 3 will you show several places of them and gives you background information about all the difficult times. Through the history of Hamburg from the past to the present day, mariners, workers, students and many others have made the city. For this reason a mix of different cultures and life styles can be found in every district. The most popular is the area around the Reeperbahn which has its origin in the workers who made rope (they needed a place with at least 300m length for weaving the big mooring lines for sailing ships). And also the well-known Beatles started their career in clubs around this street. Just a short distance away, you will find our Swing Brunch at Kölibri, owned by a club for community development, cultural and social work. 1 Only for Full Passes available 2 Only for Full Passes available 3 Only for Full Passes and just in German language available Page 4 of 12

4 Getting around in Hamburg 4.1 Parking As written before, Hamburg is a very big city. It is difficult to find a charge-free public parking lot on the street here. So we recommend you, after arriving (and hopefully finding a parking lot), not to move your car again until you leave. 4.2 Public Transportation The public transportation service in Hamburg is excellent. We have busses, metro ( U-Bahn ) and train-like-services ( S-Bahn ). All our events are reachable within the fare ring zone A and there is no difference between the different transportation services. Once you have bought a ticket, you can use it on any service except the bus lines 30 through 39 (fast bus lines with extra charge). 4.2.1 What ticket to choose? Unfortunately there exists no weekend ticket. If your host or hotel is located inside the fare ring zone A or B, we could recommend you this combination: Description 9 Uhr Tageskarte (Großbereich Hamburg, Ringe AB) 9 Uhr Gruppenkarte (Großbereich Hamburg, Ringe AB) Number of Persons 1 Person + 3 children (6-14 years) 5 Persons included Validity For both types of tickets: Monday Friday: 9h till 6h next morning Saturday/Sunday: whole day till 6h next morning Cost 6,20 11,80 4.2.2 Where to buy the ticket? When you use the bus, you get the ticket from the bus driver. Just tell him the destination or the type of ticket you want, and he will tell you the fare and give you the ticket (only cash possible: coins and bank notes). For metro or S-Bahn, you have to buy the ticket before entering the platform. You will find ticket machines at every station (only cash possible: coins and bank notes with max. 20 ). At many metro stations and also anywhere in town you can find the bike renting stations of the red colored bikes. There you can rent them and use them before you bring them back to any of these stations. For the rental you have to be registered at http://stadtrad.hamburg.de. The easiest way is to use the mobile app for registering and renting. When you rent a bike, the first 30min are always without charge. HHLX2017_Info_v1-3.docx Page 5 of 12
