Renowned for its baroque old town, lively university atmosphere, excellent pubs and evocative half-ruined castle. After having been all but destroyed by French troops under Louis XIV (1690s), it was built pretty much from scratch during the 18th century. Unlike the vast majority of German cities, it emerged from WWII almost unscathed. Today, Heidelberg is one of Germany s most romantic cities and the romance builds the longer you stay: the more you wander around, the more unexpected beauty and heart stopping panoramas you ll discover. Group Dinner Heidelberg hotel Rest of the evening free Overnight Hotel Bayrischer Hof in Heidelberg Day 9: November 19th, Heidelberg (B,D) Morning transfer to Mannheim Optional visit to John Deere Factory if you wish to stay in Heidelberg to visit the castle or other sites please indicate on your booking form. Heidelberg Palace Once a Gothic masterpiece, the Castle of Heidelberg has encountered turbulent times: It was plundered and burned by the French army in 1689, then struck by lightning 100 years later, and its red stones were even used to build new houses. The Castle of Heidelberg never regained its original glory, but the ruins have a ragged charm of their own. They are considered the symbol of German Romanticism.
