Welcome to the Verde Valley Vettes The Verde Valley Vettes was formed in August 1996 by a group of Corvette enthusiasts who wanted to enjoy their common interest and give back to their community. Located in central Arizona, the club is a member of the Roadrunner Region of the National Council of Corvette Clubs (NCCC). Throughout the year the club organizes events in support of local charities, such as the Big Brothers - Big Sisters Christmas giving program, and, through the NCCC, supports St. Judes Children s Research Hospital. Members enjoy rallies, car shows, picnics, drive-outs, competitive driving and many other activities, all of which make owning a Corvette an even more enjoyable experience. President s Message Spring is finally here and I hope you are enjoying the warm weather and running with your top down. I am. Dorothy and I went to the Corvette 2017 Jamboree Meet & Greet Corvette Fundraiser for American Cancer Society Relay for Life sponsored by the Colorado River Corvette Club in Bullhead City. What a great time we had. They are a very friendly club and a big one. They have over 80 members and are very active. At the end of the get together, they had a caravan of 46 Corvettes go all the way out to Lake Mohave and Davis Dam. They arranged for a police escort through town what fun! Dorothy and I won two certificates, one bottle of wine and one bottle of Champaign. We were the ones that traveled the farthest and the farthest club represented. Read Dorothy s article in this newsletter. I hope Tim & Judy had a good time at the Corvette Club of America Corvettes-in-the-Park All-Corvette Car Show and enjoyed it as much as we did in Bullhead City. There was a large group that met at PJ s in the Village of Oak Creek on March 29 thanks to Jim Dawson s planning. We had a good time and rated their hamburgers. Our car show is getting really close. We would like to have a very large presence of our members attending the show. Have any of you collected prizes? If each couple donated one gift, it would be perfect. We are planning to pack our goodie bags on May 13 at 10:00 A.M. at McCarty s house. We need all the help as we can get. Tia has arranged a trip to Bearizona June 2 & 3. Plan to join the group. There will be a Classic Car Show in Payson on the 13 th of May and for the first time they are going to have a Corvette Corral to feature just Corvettes. This is the same day we are going to pack goodie bags for our show on May 20. This is usually a good show. Can we do something for this show? There is going to be a 1 st Annual All Vehicle Dice Fundraiser May 6 th to benefit the American Legion Post 135 in Cornville. Registration will be from 9:00am to 10:30am at American Legion
Post 93 in Camp Verde and the ride will end at the property for the new Post in Cornville. They are a new Post and do not have a Post home yet and are meeting in the fire house in Cornville. This dice fundraiser is to help them with funds to build a Post home. They have purchased land in Cornville across the street from Old Corral. I might add Dorothy and I are members of this Post. It would be nice to see a few Corvettes in this event. It s $20 for drivers and $5 for passengers. There will be food and drinks, a silent auction and a 50/50 at the end of the run. This is all for a worthy cause. The Hare and Hound Rally is coming up July 23 rd. This is a new one for some of us. I am looking forward to this and I think we will have some out-of-towners for this. I am looking forward to seeing all of you at the meeting at Annie s on the 30 th of April at 9:30am. Live the dream drive a Vette. Jim Schade Governor s Report The big NCCC event for May is our very own 11 th annual All Chevy People s Choice Car Show at Larry Green Chevrolet on May 20. If you haven t circled that date in red on your calendar yet, do so immediately! We really need everyone to be there to support the club. Besides, you ll have fun and get a free lunch compliments of Larry Green Chevrolet to boot. The success of this event is crucial to our fund-raising efforts in support of Yavapai Big Brothers Big Sisters. A registration form is included with this newsletter and is available on our website. Speaking of our website, you may recall the rant I published in the newsletter a few months back about the difficulties I was having with our website host. After a couple more months of complaints, including e-mails, phone calls and even a letter to the corporate offices, the videos on the website are once again functional. It came down to refusing to pay the April invoice until the matter was resolved before action was finally taken. So, go to the website and check out our club trip through the White Sands National Monument as well as some of Scott Bigham s autocross and road course adventures. There are more than 20 photo galleries documenting what the club has been doing over the past year. I hope you were able to participate in some of them. The Corvette Club of Arizona (CCA), in conjunction with the Porsche Club of America, is hosting a flying lap autocross April 29, at the Arizona Motorsports Park in Phoenix. Flyer and registration forms are available on the website. The Tucson Corvette Club is sponsoring an autocross on May 27 and rally on May 28. A regional governor s meeting is scheduled on Saturday afternoon so Connie and I will be going. A flyer is included in this newsletter and on our website. On June 28, Thunder Vette Set is hosting a PC Car Show and Rally. No flyer is available yet, keep watching the website.
And don t forget Phantom Vette s Ken Daby Great Summer Escape and our Hare and Hound Rally coming up in July. Summer s here! Get out and enjoy it. Bernie Myers, Governor Colorado River Corvettes Relay for Life Jamboree 4/8/2017 The CORVETTE 2017 JAMBOREE Meet and Greet fundraiser for American Cancer Society Relay For Life sponsored by Findlay Motor Company and Colorado River Corvette Club, Bullhead City, AZ happened April 8. It was a well-organized relaxed event. They had many raffle prizes, 50/50 and a silent auction. Proceeds from the registration fee and from their events went to the American Cancer Society. There were 43 cars participating no judging, just enjoying looking at the cars and getting to know people. The event started at 11 A.M. and at approximately 11:20 A.M. after all the Corvettes were parked and registrations were completed, we were called to meet in the room provided by the dealership for their use. There were some announcements and then Gail Allen, President of the Colorado River Club started out looking for the oldest car there by asking if there were and C2 s. No response. Any C3, yes one 1969 still owned by the original owner with about 150,000 miles. He paid about $7,000 for it. We got Gail s attention and told him there is a 1966 parked next to us so he questioned everyone again. The guy did not know it was a C2. This car has been parked most of the time. It has just over 2,000 original miles on it and is bright yellow. It was parked so long that it had weather checks so deep in the tires he could put his finger in them. Dunlap made the original tires but they have been out of business for 40 + years. He did some investigation and discovered there is only one tire manufacture doing business today that was in business in 1966 (Jim thinks he said B.F. Goodrich). He had them special make the size tires he needed to match the original ones. He won for the oldest car. The next certificate and bottle of wine went to the individuals that had driven the longest distance to appear at their show we won. The next certificate and bottle of wine went to the club that was the farthest we won again. We also won one raffle prize. Gail questioned the group to find out the oldest person to purchase his first Corvette. One man said he was he was in his mid-70s when he purchased his first Corvette. When questioned who was the youngest person to have a Corvette, one lady said she was 16 when her parents gave her a 1953 Corvette. It was the 7 th Corvette off the assembly line. She sold it for $250,000 and later it sold for over a million dollars. After that, Gail spoke about the reason for the 2017 Corvette Jamboree; to make money for their charity, the American Cancer Society Relay for Life Walk. Following this we were all treated to a catered lunch of 3 different pasta dishes with salad and garlic bread. It was great. After lunch, we all went out on the parking lot and someone from the dealership went on the roof and took a picture of everyone. After the picture was taken, Dorothy stepped in front of the group and thanked them for a wonderful time and asked that each of them come to our show in May and told them fliers were put in all their cars. We had several positive responses. Many asked about the Monopoly run in October. It sounded like some will be at that event also. Afterward all 43 of us got in our cars, and caravanned to Davis Dam & Lake Mohave, then returning to Findlay Motor Company with a police escort part of the way. We got back to the dealership about 2:30 pm. Everyone disbursed after that. The Colorado River Corvette Club has 85 + members. They cannot find meeting rooms big enough for all of them. They made us feel so great. They are very friendly and fun people and were grateful that we had come. Jim & Dorothy Schade
