Welcome to Kosice Dear Orienteering Friends, The Slovak Orienteering Federation (SZOS) is honored with the decision of the IOF to award the organization of the 2012 Junior World Orienteering Championships to Slovakia. We would like to invite you to the City of Kosice and its surroundings which are the part of Eastern and South-Eastern Slovakia, where the local organizers from the club ATU Kosice will prepare beautiful terrains and excellent living and social conditions for you. There are various wonderful orienteering terrains for you. The unique Silicka planina plateau with karstic negative terrain character is well known by many important orienteering events, like World University Championships, World cup and also recent World Orienteering Championships, which was organized on the border between Hungary and Slovakia. Technically very demanding terrains in Eastern Slovakia and the sprint in the heart of the beautiful City of Kosice would also satisfy all the competitors. Different types of terrain calling for different specific skills provide the opportunity for fair and equal competitions. SZOS is relatively small association with about 500 active runners and some supporters, but we try to be active both nationally and internationally with the aim to develop or popularize this sport. The local club ATU Kosice, organizing this event, is one of two our most experienced (and best performing) orienteering clubs. As mentioned, it was for example responsible for 2006 World University Championships, which belonged to the really successful events for best students from the world. The city of Kosice, where the event centre will be prepared to serve to you, is situated on the river Hornad. Kosice is the second largest city in Slovakia with a population of nearly 242 000. The city can proud of well preserved historical center, which is the largest among Slovak towns. There are many buildings protected in the world cultural heritage. Kosice is also the place of many national and local media this fact should help us to create large media attention to this event. The SZOS and the organizers from ATU Kosice assure you that we will do our best to host you in 2012 come and visit us! Juraj Nemec president SZOS 2

Most of the city s restaurants as well as hotels are situated arround the main square or in surrounded places. The significant history of Kosice dates back to the late middle ages, the period from which dates its well konwn cathedral too. In those times, Kosice was arguably the entire region s most important centre outside of Budapest. It served as a key crossroad for traders from Italy, Germany and Netherlands as well as those of more eastern European cultures. Since that period the city declined more than once only to gain the importance again, above all in recent few decades as a major industrial centre. The attractions of Kosice are focused around the pedestrians-only main square, one of Slovakia s liveliest. The epicentre of the city is the Gothic Cathedral of St Elizabeth, and its neighbour The Empire State Theatre, the home of opera and ballet Theatrical performances in Slovak, Hungarian and Roma languages, or by puppets, are all in the vicinity. The city s museums concentrate their interest on historical aspects of art, culture and technology, and most of them are not a long way from the main square. Beneath the square itself lies more to see: extensive excavations have unveiled unique remnants of medievalfortifications and other traces of the city s past. In a field of business is Kosice a leader in heavy industry. One of Slovakia s largest plants of any kind is the steel mill currently runned by U. S. Steel, Around this complex a number of international suppliers and processors have clustered. Kosice is also a major transit hub. Its universities offer degrees in most specializations, including medicine, law, engineering and veterinary science (the latter being Slovakia s only such university), several of which are offered in English especially for non- native students. Regarding traffic Kosice offers daily connections to Prague. Bratislava and Wien by plane; and its main train station has direct daily connections to Prague, Bratislava, Budapest, Krakow and Kiev. A highway (E50) runs to Presov and part-way to the High Tatras and the Spis regions, and other roads connect it to all other directions. Nearby attractions, all within about an hour s drive, include the beautifully-restored The Krasna Horka castle, and the huge 19th-century hunting chateau of Betliar. Natural attractions include several caves registered as UNESCO Cultural Heritage sites, a mineral geyser, and extensive hiking trails as well as the aptly-named The Slovak Paradise. 7
