GENUINE LIFE IN THE ARCHIPELAGO AND THE HIGHEST POINT IN VAASA! FORT SOMMARÖ The pearl of the Kvarken archipelago The Fort Sommarö nature trail is located in the area of Sommarö s former fortress on the island of Replot. The landscape along the trail is varied, taking in the beautiful shoreline, historic archipelago villages and forests. At Fort Sommarö we ll also get to see the remains of the structures built to defend Finland in World War II, with gun mountings and air raid shelters. Vaasa s coastal seaways were guarded and defended from here. The guide will tell you more about the nature and the history of the archipelago and who knows, we might even mange to spot a sea eagle. There s a stop off for a picnic in the old guardroom. ÖJBERGET Amazing views over the sea & the meteorite crater from the highest point of Vaasa On this trip we head out into the beautiful Öjberget area, about 9 kilometres from the centre of Vaasa. The land here rose from the sea an impressive 4,000 years ago. CULTURE, ARCHITECTURE AND SIGHTSEEINGS OLD VAASA Back to Vaasa s roots Old Vaasa is approximately 7 km south-east of the centre of Vaasa and is classified as a nationally valuable landscape. It s a varied rural sight rich in natural and cultural value, and an ancient historic settlement. See the green parkland, the ruins of St Mary s church built in the fourteenth century and the embankments of Korsholma Castle, as well as other historic buildings that survived the fire of Old Vaasa in 1852. Today s Vaasa was founded after the fire of Vaasa (in Swedish Vasa, in 1855 1917 officially known as Nikolainkaupunki).
