Destination Thousands of students choose to study in the Tees Valley seeing the opportunities and advantages that an exciting, ambitious and progressive region has to offer. Why not take a look for yourself? There s culture and nightlife, energy and growth, and some of the country s most outstanding areas of natural beauty. We re located in the north east of England, with North Yorkshire to the south and County Durham to the north. The Tees Valley covers the five historic and diverse boroughs of Darlington, Hartlepool, Stockton-on-Tees, Redcar & Cleveland and Middlesbrough, with a population approaching three quarters of a million. Middlesbrough, a thriving cosmopolitan town, is home to the University of Teesside. With a wealth of attractions and events, sporting facilities, retail therapy, eating delights, great nights out and a fantastic range of accommodation, it has everything you d expect from a university town. The University is based on a single campus at the core of the lively town centre. We have invested around 100m in recent years to give some 22,000 students studying everything from undergraduate degrees to doctorates some of the most cutting-edge facilities in the UK.

Seriously trendy or seriously good value for money whatever your taste and your pocket, Middlesbrough offers a fabulous range of eating places. From café culture and tapas to gourmet treats, it s all within easy walking distance of the campus. Food and drink A parmo a local delicacy and a once-in-a-lunchtime experience. For the uninitiated, the parmesan is a pork or chicken fillet covered in bread crumbs and parmesan cheese unique to the Teesside region and certainly worth a try. STUDENT S SAY Amy Bridlington Middlesbrough in three words? Unique, interesting, fulfilling. Middlesbrough in a few more words? Middlesbrough s changing all the time like the new mima art gallery. There s great shopping, great coffee stops Costa Coffee and Starbucks and so many trendy, nice boutiques. In Linthorpe Road you think you re in London. What s your favourite place for a night out in the town? The Empire nightclub in an old theatre building it s a classic place. Where do you go for some quiet time? The fabulous Albert Park is on the doorstep but you can t believe it s in the town centre. Where s the best food locally? Apart from Sainsbury s of course which is just around the corner, the Bite Inn they do a fantastic special pizza deal. Best thing about the University? They make you feel important. What do you like about the Tees Valley? I love Darlington railway station it s just like Grand Central. And of course, there are the beautiful sunsets off Saltburn pier.

Middlesbrough has a far-reaching reputation for a great night out. Its vibrant scene with the right music and party atmosphere offers endless choice. From the stylish and contemporary Blue Lounge to the fabulous Dickens Inn it s all on the doorstep. There s nightclubs galore including Aruba and Onyx offering special student nights. The Arena, which has played host to Sex Pistols, Oasis and The Libertines, re-opened its doors this summer. And The Empire since it opened in 1991 has seen some of the world s finest DJs and producers such as Paul Oakenfold, Pete Tong, Roger Sanchez, Erick Morillo,Tiesto and Paul van Dyke. The choice doesn t stop there. Club M in Yarm is a popular venue for a good night out which attracts revellers from all over the UK every weekend to fill the 8,000 capacity venue. Regular events include Retro, Goodgreef and More. Guest DJs and live PAs feature heavily with Paul Taylor, Adam Sheridan and Eddie Halliwell making regular appearances. But why leave the campus? In the award-winning Students Union, the Hub a new night and day venue with 1,000 capacity offers stylish clubbing with cutting-edge décor created by world-renowned designers. It s a popular choice with students, Great atmosphere and very welcoming, says Chris Young, BA (Hons) History. After dark Middlesbrough Music Live Middlesbrough Music Live is becoming the festival to see attracting big name bands including Razorlight and Kaiser Chiefs. The night life is buzzing in Middlesbrough, no matter what you re into, there is something to suit all tastes. Andrea Hill BSc (Hons) Criminology The Empire, Middlesbrough

The Transporter Bridge Middlesbrough Riverside Stadium

Out and active Discover the great outdoors in the Tees Valley. From cycling to rock climbing, from surfing to golf, from rugby to horse racing there s activities to suit all tastes, talents and fitness levels. The River Tees offers great opportunities for watersports enthusiasts with the Tees Barrage providing a world-class white-water rafting facility. Up river, you ll find the River Tees Watersports Centre, part owned by the University, where you can take part in water-skiing, canoeing and kayaking. With the new Prissick Skate Plaza on the doorstep you can access some of the best skaters facilities in the UK and Middlesbrough Football Club s Riverside Stadium is close to campus. There s no excuse not to get involved. However, if it s tranquillity you prefer, Middlesbrough caters for that too. The quiet and stillness of Albert Park is within easy walking distance of the University and Stewart Park offers an abundance of green space locally. In fact, the borough has 92 square metres of green space for every resident. For the seafarers, there s the popular spa town of Saltburn with it s rugged coastline and dramatic pier, and the local town of Hartlepool with its multi award-winning Maritime Experience attraction. Tees Barrage STUDENT S SAY Trevor Langford West Sussex I absolutely love living and studying in the North East, it s a growing part of the country.

A CAPITAL of culture Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art Middlesbrough buzzes with vital energy seven days a week. And for those interested in the arts and culture there s plenty on the agenda, with most museums, galleries and festivals offering free admission. The annual multi-cultural Middlesbrough Mela showcases popular performance and music, celebrating the town s cultural diversity with food, arts and crafts. Animex, the international festival of animation and computer games, hosted by the University, attracts famous animators and games developers from around the world. Middlesbrough Music Live, one of the biggest free music festivals in the UK is a must for anyone serious about sound, with previous acts including Keane, The Darkness and Kasabian. The latest addition to Middlesbrough s arts venues is mima Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art. A bold new gallery, costing over 19m, it houses modern and contemporary art. A stone s throw from the University campus, it hosts temporary exhibitions by internationally acclaimed artists throughout the year. Close by to mima is Middlesbrough's largest public sculpture The Bottle of Notes. The imposing steel structure celebrates the town s industrial and pioneering past whilst looking forward to a dynamic future. For comedy and classical concerts, Bollywood and ballet, there s Middlesbrough Little Theatre and the town hall locally, and the Arc, an impressive venue for performing arts, live music and film in neighbouring Stockton. Also in Stockton is the Stockton International Riverside Festival an annual street arts festival and the Stockton Riverside Fringe Festival which last year won the accolade Best Cultural Event in the North East. And if you fancy a trip to the cinema, you re spoilt for choice there are multi-screens at Cineworld locally and Showcase at Teesside Retail Park. The Bottle of Notes, Middlesbrough

Hill Street Shopping Centre Shopping in style has never been easier as a student with Psyche, an exclusive multi awardwinning department store just around the corner from the campus. Established in 1982, it won the FHM Menswear Retailer of the Year award. The pedestrianised Linthorpe Road and Corporation Road are at the heart of the town with Debenhams and Binns House of Fraser in the refurbished pedestrian space. New additions include Monsoon, Costa Coffee, H&M, Starbucks, George and Zumo. A large Topshop has recently relocated to The Mall and New Look has opened close by. Retail therapy Middlesbrough is the retail capital of the Tees Valley. From Linthorpe Road s chic designer boutiques and specialist retail outlets, to the high street names and departments stores of Hillstreet, the Mall, Dundas and Captain Cook Square shopping centres, there s something to suit everyone. Then there s Teesside Retail Park which offers easy access to more high street names. And when you ve shopped til you ve dropped, visit the adjacent Teesside Leisure Park for bowling or a pizza. But there s more than shops, there are plenty of of markets in the Tees Valley too including Guisborough, Redcar, Stockton and Darlington so if you have an eye for a bargain, this is the place for you. Middlesbrough has more shopping floor space than Gateshead s famous Metro Centre. Linthorpe Road, Middlesbrough
