PRINCE WILLIAM SOUND & WRANGELL ST. ELIAS NATIONAL PARK PRINCE WILLIAM SOUND & WRANGELL ST. ELIAS NATIONAL PARK Valdez, Alaska WELCOME TRAVELERS, ERS I am proud to introduce you to Pangaea Adventures. We are a professional guide service offering sea kayaking and glacier hiking day trips, extended camping tours, multi-sport adventures and mothership charters. Our base is the beautiful town of Valdez, Alaska, from which we explore the tranquil wilderness and abundant wildlife of Prince William Sound and Wrangell St. Elias National Park from May through September each year. While the following pages offer great information about our services, no words or pictures can truly grasp the beauty of the land and waterways we share with the sea otters and mountain goats. The best I can do in this booklet is to tickle your senses just enough for you to catch a flight North and join us for a day, a week, or more to experience for yourself why Alaska means The Great Land. At Pangaea Adventures, we are in business to have fun and to share the fun with our guests. With this, we have set the standards for customer service in our industry by offering year-round office staff, top-notch guides and a guest-to-guide ratio that averages 4:1. I am not shy to say that we have received amazing feedback from our guests, other industry professionals, and even from the top travel guides such as Lonely Planet and Frommers. I invite you to become a part of the growing Pangaea Adventures family and join us for an unforgettable active adventure in our backyard wilderness. I look forward to meeting you. THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU. WHAT A GREAT, WONDERFUL EXPERIENCE. BEAUTIFUL PLACE, OTTERS, SEALS, AND GREAT PEOPLE. PAT & JAMIE, LAKE TAHOE WHAT PANGAEA MEANS Pangaea is the name given to the supercontinent that existed 200 million years ago before the individual continents formed. For us, Pangaea symbolizes Adventures Without Borders and the rekindling of people s inborn desire to experience the natural wonders found in the remote regions of the planet. A wilderness without continental borders. 2 Sincerely, Tim Duffy & The Entire Pangaea Crew Information Topic Pages Basics About our Services... 4-5 Where We Explore Maps... 6-7 Kayak Day Tours... 8-9 Hikes & Ice Climbing... 10-11 Rafting... 10-11 Kayak Camping Basics... 12-13 Kayak Camping Tours... 14-15 Multi-sport Basics... 16-17 Multi-sport Tours... 18-19 Backpacking Basics... 20-21 Backpacking Trips... 22-23 Mothership & Lodge Basics... 24-25 Mothership & Lodge Tours... 26-27 Custom Trips... 28-29 Water Taxi, Rentals, Reservations... 30-31

B ASICS ABOUT OUR T RIPS WHY TRAVEL WITH PANGAEA? From day one of the company s formation, we have made customer service our priority. The landscape and activities we cover speak for themselves. The way we travel through the Alaskan wilderness and our commitment to our customers from first contact to the goodbye hug is unmatched by any other company. We also strive for the perfect balance of recreation, adventure, and education. Alaska For Dummies listed us as one of the top activities in Prince William Sound and The Lonely Planet guide even mentioned the great reader recommendations sent to the publisher. Our love for what we do and our desire to share this beautiful country is always present in our dayto-day operations. Our care for the environment parallels this philosophy with our commitment to the Leave No Trace backcountry ethic. What makes us different from other companies really comes down to customer service, our well maintained top quality equipment, refined itineraries and highly-trained staff. Don t just listen to us, ask any of our past guests. We would be happy to supply a long list of references. (GREAT TIME, WELL ORGANIZED!) CHARLES & BARBARA CLARK, GRAND HAVEN, MI Sea Otter Sea Lion at Bull Head WHEN TO TRAVEL We offer tours during the months of May September. June - August are the most popular times to visit. If you are deciding when to travel, keep in mind that all of these months are wonderful. Remember, the sun shines for almost 24 hours a day from May early August. Northern lights can be seen in late August & September. The weather tends to be better in early summer, but August can still offer many sunshine-filled days. THE PLACES WE EXPLORE We didn t just randomly pick a place to call our home. We discovered a place with exceptional beauty and endless opportunity to explore remote wilderness and a high concentration of glaciers with no crowds and easy access to our base. Valdez is the ultimate playground! PRINCE WILLIAM SOUND From Valdez, we explore hundreds of coastline miles adorned with tide water glaciers, alpine peaks jetting from sea level to over 7000 feet and pristine bays which the local wildlife call home. From Valdez, the highlights are Columbia, Shoup, the Sea Lion Colony at Bulls Head and dozens of remote bays. Meares Columbia WRANGELL ST. ELIAS NATIONAL PARK Just a few hours by van or a short bush flight from Valdez is the largest National Park in the US. Not only is it large, but it is also filled with an uninhabited wilderness of mountains, glaciers, rivers, and alpine tundra. We enter the park through a small town called McCarthy, located in the heart of the park. From McCarthy, we can either take day hikes to the historic Kennecott Mine, backpack out over the Root to Donoho Wilderness or choose an itinerary where a bush plane drops us off at a remote park location. Between Prince William Sound and Wrangell St. Elias National Park, we have hundreds of Shoup V Worthington thousands of acres to explore. Most major airlines offer regular service. Once you have arrived in Anchorage, you have the choice of flying, driving or taking a ferry directly to Valdez. Flights take 40 minutes. Driving takes about 5 hours unless you stop to see the many sights. The ferry basically takes all day. 6 FLY CALL: 1-800-660-9637 OR 1-907-835-8442 ERA Aviation offers connecting service from Anchorage to Valdez on a daily basis. Please call (800) 426-0333 or visit www.flyera. com. Flights at printing of this brochure were approximately $300+ round trip. Major airlines can also book these flights. It is also possible to charter a private plane, but private flights are very weather dependent. DRIVE The major car rental agencies offer car rentals in Anchorage. You may find it most cost effective to keep the car for a week or so if you join us for an extended tour. The car rental agency in Valdez does not offer costeffective one way rentals. There is also ferry service to Valdez from Whittier or Seward which allows cars. TRAIN/FERRY COMBO Check with the Alaska Marine Highway ferry system & Alaska Railroad for the current schedules. You will want to take the train from Anchorage to Whittier, where you will then catch the ferry to Valdez. This price is comparable to flying. We can pick you up at the ferry dock in Valdez. The state ferry allows cars on-board for an additional fee. E-MAIL: info@alaskasummer.com VISIT: www.alaskasummer.com

KAYAK CAMPING MULTI-DAY SEA KAYAKING IN PRINCE WILLIAM SOUND There s nothing like the feeling of packing your sea kayak with all of the necessities (as well as some special treats) and setting off into the wilderness. Kayak camping can be compared to backpacking, except that with a kayak, one can carry the equivalent of two backpacks without breaking a sweat. From our starting point, Pangaea Adventures will show you the many facets of Prince William Sound; a giant unspoiled gem of towering glaciers, unique wildlife and unmatched remote wilderness. Each evening when you tie up at camp, fresh salmon, halibut, barbeque or other delicacy is crackling on the camp stove, so pitch one of our quality tents and settle down to a Wilderness Gourmet meal. How do the guides fit all of that stuff into their kayaks? Sorry, that s a trade secret! We paddle 5-12 miles per day, in mostly calm water, with some minor rough water encounters on a few stretches of various trips. We prepared meals that include a variety of fresh fish, meats, fruits and veggies. Experience comfortable yet remote camps with clean drinking water and a variety of wildlife. MULTI-SPORT TOURS A MIX OF SEA KAYAKING, BACKPACKING & RAFTING Our multi-sport tours are your answer to an all inclusive vacation. Sea kayak to glaciers, raft wilderness rivers, and backpack through the towering glaciated mountains. WHAT TO EXPECT Experience a variety of activities in our favorite wilderness areas. Enjoy our high quality equipment, guides and meals. Expect well organized itineraries; making the best of your time in Alaska. THANKS FOR A WONDERFUL TRIP. AMANDA & KEVIN SHOWED US A GREAT 5-DAY KAYAKING TRIP. THEIR KNOWLEDGE OF THE WILDLIFE AND THE AREA ENHANCED THE TRIP. CARRIE MADE THE BACKPACKING PORTION OF OUR TRIP GREAT. I WILL RECOMMEND ANYONE AND EVERYONE TO PANGAEA BOB HARVEY, ATLANTA, GA We focus on Prince William Sound, Wrangell St. Elias National Park, the Chugach Mountains, and the Copper Basin of South Central Alaska. ACTIVITIES INCLUDE: - Sea Kayaking - Backpacking - Rafting - Hikes - Ice Climbing - Historic Tours - Scenic Flights - Boat Tours MOST POPULAR MULTI-SPORT OPTIONS SEE DESCRIPTIONS ON NEXT PAGE SAMPLE ITINERARY (8-DAY ALASKAN SAMPLER FLY-IN) SEA KAYAK, RAFT, BACKPACK DAY 1 Meet at Pangaea for gear-up and instruction. Take a motorboat to Sawmill Bay and paddle the coastline to Shoup. Set camp with a glacier view. DAY 2 Paddle to the face of Shoup and go for a hike for a birds-eye view. Enjoy the same camp. DAY 3 Paddle the 16 coastline back to Valdez with a stop at Gold Creek State Park for lunch and a hike. Relax in Valdez. DAY 4 Take the beautiful drive through Keystone Canyon and over Thompson Pass inland to Chitina, where you will catch a scenic flight to the historic town of McCarthy in Wrangell St. Elias National Park. Raft a remote and beautiful class III whitewater stretch of the park, catch a scenic flight-see return to McCarthy from the take-out, and go onto camp that night on the edge of the Kennicott. DAY 5-7 Fly in to Iceberg Lake for 3 1 / 2 days of hikes and backpacking. Iceberg Lake offers high alpine tundra and grand views of glaciers. DAY 8 Take a hike in the morning before the plane arrives for the flight back to McCarthy and then on to Valdez. WHY FLY-IN BACKPACKING TRIPS Alaska is huge and there are very few trails. We have explored many areas in the Wrangell and Chugach Mountains and have learned from experience that the best hiking is in the high country above the tree line where there is less bushwacking. Without trails, we have to use airplanes to get there! BACKPACKING TRIPS WRANGELL ST. ELIAS NATIONAL PARK & THE CHUGACH Pangaea Adventures organizes backpacking and base-camp hiking adventures in both Wrangell St. Elias National Park and the Chugach Mountains surrounding Prince William Sound. For a unique adventure, we can plan trips to areas where few other hikers have ever been. We can also take your group to the classic areas in the National Park or easily accessed trails in the Chugach Mountains. Read below why we prefer to arrange backpacking trips with fly-in access. WHAT TO EXPECT Backpacking trips come in many levels of difficulty. It is important to choose a trip appropriate for your fitness and comfort level. Base camps are wonderful for a flexible schedule and more comfortable camp. Point-to-point backpacking covers more challenging terrain and requires more commitment in most cases. Both offer active days and breathtaking views. Expect knowledgeable guides, remote wilderness and well-planned meals. Our listed trips are just a sample of what we can offer. Like all of our trips, many groups create custom itineraries that range from 4-8 days. SAMPLE ITINERARY (5-DAY ICEBERG LAKE BASE CAMP) DAY 1 Meet at Pangaea for gear-up and introduction. Drive through scenic Keystone Canyon and Thompson Pass to the historic town of McCarthy in the heart of Wrangell St. Elias National Park. This town is the starting point for our flight into the backcountry. 20 Enjoy scenic views as we take a bush plane up the Tana Valley. Set camp at Iceberg Lake. DAY 2 Hike along Iceberg Lake, which may or may not be filled with water, but is usually filled with chunks of ice. Hike the hillside for scenic views of the Bagley Ice Field. Return to base camp for a pleasant evening. DAY 3 Hike up the valley and across the foot of a glacier and up the ridge line adorned with wildflowers and granite spires. DAY 4 Another great day of hiking. The guide will choose a hike based on the CALL: 1-800-660-9637 OR 1-907-835-8442 energy of the group. Maybe we ll climb a nearby peak! DAY 5 We usually stay close to camp to explore the lake before the bush plane picks us up for the flight back to McCarthy and then back to Valdez. WHY BACKPACK WRANGELL ST. ELIAS NATIONAL PARK The largest National Park in the U.S. is one of the secrets of Alaska and is located only a few hours drive from Valdez. We make the best of the experience and encourage fly-in backpacking trips to access the remote valleys and glaciers of the park. This park offers unmatched hiking opportunities with no crowds. POPULAR BACKPACKING OPTIONS SEE NEXT PAGES FOR ALL TOURS 5-DAY ICEBERG LAKE BASE CAMP See sample itinerary description below. 6-DAY SCOLAI TO WOLVERINE If you are looking for an exciting and challenging point-to-point trek with scenic views and rewarding days, this is for you.
