Day 1 Welcome to Borneo! Arrive in Kota Kinabalu, where you will be met at the airport by a member of our Camp Borneo team and transferred to your accommodation in the city. Here you will meet our Country Manager who will run an arrival briefing for you and your group before your welcome dinner. Day 2 Welcome to Camp Tinangol After a much needed sleep and a good breakfast, you will transfer to Camp Tinangol. This is a beautifully scenic drive which takes around 3hours. A good i-pod playlist will be a great accompaniment for your journey views! Upon arrival you will meet our Camp Tinangol team, including our Camp Manager who will show you around and give you an overview of what your time here will involve. Then it s time to choose your bed in your new traditional longhouse home. The community of Tinangol lies 140 km north of the state capital Kota Kinabalu and 30 km from Kudat. The village is home to approximately 100 households. This subsistence Rungus community predominantly live in the traditional style longhouses and are one of the most resolute cultures of the many peoples that make up the population of Sabah. This welcoming community practice their traditional handicrafts, music and dancing, taking care to pass the knowledge to their kin and are more than happy to introduce strangers to their culture. Life in the community is basic and a large proportion of the populace is below average by Malaysian education standards. The young people who do achieve in school often have to leave the community to find work in local towns like Kudat, Kota Belud and Kota Kinabalu Days 3-5 Project work/ activities at Camp Tinangol You will spend the next few days volunteering alongside the local community. This is your chance to get stuck in to some valuable initiatives such as creating a water feed system for the village, helping with the building of the market place for the locals, teaching basic English to primary age children, working at our permaculture garden and running fun activities and sports sessions with the local children. Day 6 R&R Day R&R days are the perfect time to relax and experience some of the beautiful sights that Sabah has to offer. We can arrange a visit to the tip of Borneo, Kudat Town, or the famous gong making village. Alternatively, you can spend some time at the beach BBQ included!
Day 7 Welcome to Batu Puteh After breakfast you will be transferred to our incredible jungle camp at Batu Puteh. Located on the east coast of Borneo, your journey will be around 7/8 hours, but another very beautiful road trip. Upon arrival, you will meet our team and also a local family who will accommodate you for a home-stay. This is fantastic chance for a true glimpse into authentic Malaysian family life. The great concentration of wildlife in Borneo can be found on this part of the island. Wild orangutan, macaques, red and silver leaf monkey, elephants, dozens of beautiful birds including several species or hornbill, crocodiles, civets cats and otters, can be seen in this region. Undoubtedly the most famous creature of all is the bizarre proboscis monkey, found only here and nowhere else. Day 8 Forest Ethnobotany Lesson You will be taken for an early morning river safari along the Kinabatangan River where you will see the incredible wildlife you may even be lucky enough to see orangutan in their natural habitat! After breakfast you will take a walk into the jungle with our team and learn about the forest types and ethnobotany. You will participate in a vital environmental project, helping to reforest areas where the jungle has been destroyed to provide a safe haven for the animals that depend on it for survival. Your overnight stay will be at your host families house and you can enjoy delicious home cooked Malay food. Day 9-10 Nursery Propagation Programme After breakfast you will start your nursery propagation and seed collecting activities. You will be collecting the seed from the mother trees in the jungle and taking them back to the nursery. In the evening you will be staying at our jungle camp and spending the night in a hammock a great experience! After dinner, a member of our team will take you for a night walk around the camp and the surrounding area to see what you can spot.
Day 11 Forest Restoration Programme After breakfast you will be going to the reforestation site where you will be planting trees to continue the wildlife corridor conservation project. Your evening will be spent with your host family. Day 12 Sandakan Tour Day Yay! It s a tour day to Sandakan. You will visit the Orangutan Sanctuary at Sepilok where you have the chance to explore the rainforest and see the orangutang at their feeding time. After lunch you will visit the P.O.W (War Memorial Park) at Sandakan a must-see for all visitors to this area. You will return to Batu Puteh for your final night stay at your home-stay. Day 13 Transfer Back to Kota Kinabalu We will head back to KK today and you will have a final chance to explore and do some last minute souvenir before your farewell meal. Day 14 Expedition Ends in Kota Kinabalu and Departure Day Your Camp Borneo experience ends today! We will say our goodbyes and transfer you to KK airport 2 hours before your scheduled flight time.
