Welcome Notes... Dear Skålleagues and honoured guests, It is a great pleasure for me, as President of Skål International, to welcome you to the 46th Congress of the Asian Area Committee here in Bahrain. Skål International is a unique, professional association whose members are senior professionals from all branches of the travel and tourism industry. It does not discriminate on grounds of religion, race, sex or age, politics or social standing which can be evidenced by looking around the members gathered here in Bahrain. On my travels as President and even before as a Director of Skål International I have always received a very warm welcome and this, I must, say is customary when Skål members meet fellow Skål members. Please feel free to come to me with any questions or suggestions you may have and I shall be delighted to discuss them with you. Finally, on a personal note, my first overseas assignment when I started working for the Bank of America in the late 1970s was to Bahrain and the change that has taken place in the last, almost 40 years, is impressive. I wish Bahrain, its people and all Skål members continued success in their daily life in the tourism industry. DAVID J. FISHER President 2017 Skål International Dear International Skålleagues, On behalf of the Asian Area members and Board of Officers for Skål, it is with great honor and pride that I welcome all delegates and accompanying persons to the 46th Skål Asia Congress in Bahrain from 12 to 15 May 2017. Asia, stretching more than 10,000 kms between the two most distant clubs of Guam and Mauritius, is the most diverse Area and one of the few areas of the world where Skål is experiencing strong growth. Under the leadership of Skålleague Mohamed Buzizi, Club President, Skål International Bahrain has remained strong, healthy and dynamic for the last 45 years since its inception in 1972. Skålleague Buzizi and his professional team have worked very hard to make this Congress one of the most successful and memorable Congresses in recent years. Tremendous progress has been achieved since the foundation of the SKÅL movement in December 1932, an amazing near 85 years ago. In Bahrain, where the Middle East s second SKÅL club was established following the first in Lebanon where I was the Club President prior to moving to the Kingdom, I had the pleasure to coordinate with a few colleagues to form SKÅL Club 370. The SKÅL Club of Bahrain has worked tirelessly over the decades and led by President Mohammed Buzizi, who has held the SKÅL torch in an exemplary manner, it has enjoyed continuing success as part of the worldwide SKÅL Club movement. Bird watching (primarily in the Hawar Islands), Gravity, scuba diving and horse riding are popular tourist activities in Bahrain. Many tourists from nearby Saudi Arabia and across the region visit Manama primarily for the shopping malls in the capital Manama, such as the Bahrain City Centre and Seef Mall in the Seef district of Manama. The Manama Souq and Gold Souq in the old district of Manama are also popular with tourists.
