NOTES TO THE CONDUCTOR This composition is intended to e percussie and musically driing Make certain that the articulations are closely olloed and that the melodic statement, hich appears irst in the lo rass and oodinds at rehearsal numer 8, is played ith precision Notice that the / 5 time signatures at measures 9, 5, 3, and, should e conducted in a -3 pattern At rehearsal numer 6 through measure, a canonic style composition technique is estalished The initial melodic statement continues in the lo rass and oodinds, and a ar later a simple -part canon is introduced in the clarinets, alto saxophones, and horns The canon is then expanded to three parts at rehearsal numer 6, giing this section a true polyphonic style The canon is the strictest rom o imitation, in hich to or more parts hae the same melody ut start at dierent points Again, make certain that each player is articulating the notes correctly as indicated Measures 3 through 58 are to e played sloly and calmly ith much expression Emphasize ensemle alance and intonation throughout this section At rehearsal numer 59, the tempo is a it aster, ut strie to maintain the intensity until the Del Segno al Coda The coda should uild little y little as indicated until the end, and although the last note is marked ortissimo, the sound should e controlled and not lared out Note that the percussion parts at rehearsal numer 8 through measure 3 are ritten somehat independent and ill need a little extra rehearsal time Hoeer, the percussie colors produced are meant to ornament the total ensemle sound It is my intent that Lion o Knidos ill proide an opportunity or young musicians to experience quality and exciting concert contest literature that also holds uniersal appeal to all audiences Musically yours, reie Only
