Essex County, Ontario, Militia Rolls for the Period 2 July to 24 July 1812 Diane Wolford Sheppard, FCHSM member (bluecolumbine@comcast.net) Library and Archives Canada granted permission to transcribe the information contained in the Payroll, Muster Rolls, and Musterly Returns of the Essex County Militia for the period 2 July to 24 July 1812. The rolls are contained on the Adjutant-General s Office Upper Canada fonds/reel T 10388, Volume 1, p. 5, and Volume 32, pp. 15-30, and 335-347. I transcribed the following information from the payrolls: name, rank, dates of service if recorded, and all comments contained on the roll, spelling out abbreviated comments if it would aid in understanding, and following the capitalization contained in the original. The names were transcribed as closely as possible to the original. Comments such as the standardized spelling of French-Canadian names or the original surname and dit name appear in brackets. Many men used only their dit names during this period; in some cases, I could not determine their original surname because the dit name was used by too many families to identify them. 1 The names of French Canadians or those of French-Canadian descent appear in bold face-type. The names of those with possible French-Canadians have brackets after their name with the designation [possibly French Canadian, but they do not appear in standard sources]. I have not made any efforts to standardize the spelling of those who were not French Canadian. I have used question marks to designate illegible words or phrases, or a question regarding the spelling or standardization of a name. Readers will recall that during the period covered by the Militia Rolls, American General William Hull invaded Sandwich (present-day Windsor, Ontario) on 12 July 1812; on 13 July, he issued his proclamation threatening the life of any British soldier or member of the militia fighting with the Native Americans. The desertions during July are likely due to a combination of two factors: Hull s presence in Essex County, and the need to harvest crops. Following the departure of the American army from Essex County, many members of the militia returned to duty. Some may have returned to duty because the harvest was finished or because they were influenced by British General Isaac Brock s 14 August general order calling for the return of all the troops. See the Part 2 of the timeline on pages 96-99 of this issue. The rolls for the 1 st Regiment Companies were annotated to show when they returned to duty; the rolls of the 2 nd Regiment were not annotated with this information. 2 Field and Staff Officers of the 1 st Regiment of the Essex County Militia Reel T 10388, Volume 1, page 5 Ebenezer Reynolds, Major, Command of the Flank Companies of the Western District Militia William Duff, Adjutant Captain Caldwell s Company of the 1 st Regiment Reel T 10388, Volume 32, pages 15-16 William Caldwell, Captain, 2 nd July to 24 th July, On Duty Thos.
