Box 573, Torrensville, South Australia, 5031 Website: http://www.greeklyceumsa.org.au Facebook: Greek Lyceum (South Australia-Inc) Email: vasily247@yahoo.com.au NEWSLETTER June 2011 I would like to begin by thanking parents, students and friends of the Greek Lyceum of S.A. for their continued support of the school s endeavours and to maintain focus on its Aims, Objectives and Purpose in the S.A. community. The Greek Lyceum School of Greek Dance and Culture is an important part of the S.A. Community s cultural scene and all its members and committees, past and present, have worked hard and taken immense pride in the school s achievements since its inception in 1993. Many fine students and teachers have passed through the school and expressed themselves creatively through the Lyceum s programmes/concerts of Greek dance, music and song. The Greek Lyceum s mission statement serves the Arts and the creative impulses combined with the history and traditions -- as expressed in dance, music, costuming and literature. These expressions are an essential part of life, therefore we (parents and teachers alike) hope our children learn the importance of the arts as an expression of the human spirit, and they are, each one of them, special and unique and of infinite worth. They continue to have learned and grown.. hopefully to mature, respect and value themselves and others. Website Please take the opportunity to visit the Lyceum s website at

Page2 http://greeklyceumsa.org.au/ The website is our portal to the world and is full of information and we re constantly adding more about Greek folklore, traditions and the school s commitment to these over the years since the Greek Lyceum s inception in 1993. Great design and upkeep of the site by our most excellent webmaster (and senior dancer) Karey Nikias. Thank you Karey. Teaching Staff I d like to acknowledge the hard work accomplished in the Junior school by Ms. Marie Arvanitakis and Ms. Alexandra Nikias. The students are always well prepared and past performances have been of a high order. Thrilling to see new faces in the junior class the new generation of Lyceum dancers Alexandra has given faithful service to the Lyceum in both the Senior school and Junior Schools. Alexandra has come through the ranks since joining as a young Junior primary student. An experienced performing artist she is currently also leading and teaching the Senior A and B classes at the SA Folk Centre every Tuesday night. I will continue in the role of Artistic Director and support Ms. Marie and Ms. Alexandra with the curriculum throughout the school year. The Junior School consists of two classes Juniors and Intermediates. Their curriculum is largely made up of Greek regional dances and songs from our traditional repertoire and contemporary Greek dances. GREEK LYCEUM of S.A. Inc. Junior class dance curriculum 1. Page7 A la Carte Menu Annual Dance on the 6 th of August Big thank you to the Chian Association of S.A. for making their hall available once again. Their support is a tremendous support to us at the Lyceum. Please book your tickets through Georgina, Vasily and Angela as soon as possible to avoid disappointment. Why not get a group together and book your table now. All Lyceum students are expected to attend and dance in costume. Parents will bring cameras!!!!!

Page8 Costumes and accessories As always parents and students are reminded to take the utmost care of the Lyceum costumes loaned out. Unfortunately permission to wear our costumes and accessories to non- Lyceum events is not possible. The costume department at the Lyceum has taken a long time and a lot of effort to build and everyone at the G.L. should well understand our concerns and passion for costume care. Any queries about these matters are to be directed to the committee members and/or teaching staff. Costumes for the Junior School There is a sub-committee made up of teachers, parents and students currently working on Greek costume designs for the Junior school and new T-Shirt for all Lyceum students and friends of the Lyceum. Fund-Raising efforts shortly to be put into effect for costume making expenses. Vasily Mouzakitis 0433 462 501 vasily247@yahoo.com.au
