WALKING & DRAWING THE HIGHLINE After checking into the hostel we will start our sketchbooks on the Highline. This is a public park built on a historic freight rail line elevated above the streets on Manhattan s West Side. It runs from Gansevoort Street in the Meatpacking District to West 34th Street, between 10th and 12th Avenues. That afternoon we will be eating in the world famous Chelsea market. A block long and a block wide and just a short walk from the Hudson River, Chelsea Market has become one of the greatest indoor food halls of the world, with more than thirty-five vendors purveying everything from soups to sweets, cheeses to cheesecakes and tastes of every continent. We will then head back to the hostel located in the Upper- West Side and spend the first evening familiarising ourselves with the communal area and critique the work we produced that afternoon. And have an early night!
METROPOLITAN MUSEUM OF ART The Metropolitan Museum of Art, or the Met, is located next to Central Park and is the largest art museum in the United States, and is among the most visited art museums in the world. Its permanent collection contains over two million works, divided among seventeen curatorial departments. The main building, on the eastern edge of the park is, by area, one of the world's largest art galleries. CENTRAL PARK In the late afternoon there will be independent time where students will have drawing tasks to complete around the park. Covering 843 acres of land, the park has appeared in over 350 films and is home to 29 pieces of sculpture. We will meet at an agreed location and travel back to the hostel together to critique the day's work.
THE GUGGENHEIM Designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, the Solomon R. Guggenheim is an internationally renowned art museum and an architectural icon of the 20th century. Wright s masterpiece opened to the public on October 21st 1959, six months after his death, and is arguably the most important building of Wright s late career. Hopefully, 4 hours will be enough for us to experience the whole thing properly! INDEPENDENT TIME Considering our morning location on the Upper East Side, we will be travelling south to see the architecture around Grand Central Station and the Chrysler Building. We will travel there together but students will have independent time to explore and draw. We will travel back to the hostel together and drawing tasks and work will be discussed in the evening.
THE MUSEUM OF MODERN ART The Museum of Modern Art is a place that fuels creativity, ignites minds, and provides inspiration. With extraordinary exhibitions and the world's finest collection of modern and contemporary art, MoMA is dedicated to the conversation between the past and the present, the established and the experimental. Having the opportunity to see so many famous and influential pieces of work, it will definitely be an experience! INDEPENDENT TIME Considering our morning location in Midtown Manhattan we will visit public spaces such as the Rockefeller Centre and Times Square. Again, students will be expected to produce work that will support their studies. Street maps and subway maps will be provided to assist movement around the city. We will meet at an agreed point and travel back to the hostel together for the evening.
WTC MEMORIAL PARK We will travel together to the south of the city to the memorial site that marks the devastation of September 11, 2001 and February 26, 1993. It is located in a field of trees that is interrupted by two large voids containing recessed pools. The pools sit in the footprints of the twin towers and the large voids, open and visible reminders of the resulting absence. There will be independent time to draw and reflect on the space. WALL ST. & BROOKLYN BRIDGE We will walk, as a group, south to Wall Street and through the financial district to Battery Park and the ferry terminals. Here we will be able to glimpse the Statue of Liberty. We will walk east to Pier 15 where will draw the iconic Brooklyn Bridge. Again, we will travel back as a group to critique the day's hard work!
FLATIRON & EMPIRE STATE On our last day we will use our time constructively to visit some of the most iconic buildings in New York. We will travel together to Midtown and soak up the atmosphere in what has been called 'the best place to live in NYC'. There will undoubtedly be some independent (shopping) time before travelling back as a group to the hostel. There, we will collect our luggage and travel to JFK for our return trip. AWARDS CEREMONY During our return home, students will get to experience the world famous Art Department Awards! Our 8th annual ceremony will see students' sketchbooks being scrutinised by a panel of highly qualified judges and prizes awarded across a range of categories. For most, it will definitely be the highlight of the trip!
LUGGAGE Please pack sensibly! We will be doing an incredible amount of walking and will be on our feet for the majority of the trip. Please don t wear new shoes for the first time. Ensure you check the weather beforehand but it would be advised to pack a light waterproof coat. Average temperatures for this time of the year are between 7 and 12 degrees and April has around 15 days of rain. Hold luggage should be a maximum of 20KG and a sturdy rucksack is advised for our daily trips. Most galleries require us to check rucksacks into cloakrooms so a small tote-style bag comes in handy for art materials. EVENING NOISE Once students go to their dorms, we expect no movement in the night. We must respect the fact that we are not the only guests in the hostel. If a complaint has been received about noise from the group, the hostel will employ someone to monitor the room at a rate of 20$ an hour for each night of the trip. This cost will not be met by the school and will be the responsibility of the students involved. GEOGRAPHY Even though its relatively easy to navigate around the city, we expect students to have knowledge of our itinerary and the locations we will be visiting. Each morning we will brief the group about the day, communicate subway stops and highlight locations on our maps. We expect everyone have their own maps and not rely on others for directions. There will be an element of independent time most days so students will need to familiarise themselves with our geography. The art department has created a Google Map of the itinerary and individuals can be invited to view it if they have a Google account. There is internet in most public spaces so it is advised that students with smartphones download maps of the city and the New York Subway map and route planner App. ART KIT This is an art trip and students will be provided with a task checklist to complete during the week. It is advised that they bring a selection of media to work with. e.g. dry materials such as graded and colour pencils, fineliners and markers and wet materials such as a small watercolour palette. Creative Apps can also be utilised on mobile devices. SOCIAL MEDIA We understand that students will want to post photographs to their accounts but we ask that this is done sensibly. We do not want future trips jeopardised as a result of inappropriate content.
