Keukenhof Gardens This world-renowned floral extravaganza has a rich history beginning as the kitchen garden of a 15th-century countess. Now, it is the only place on earth where you can witness the unforgettable sight of seven million bulbs blooming at once: daffodils, hyacinths, narcissi and, of course, Holland s signature tulips. The grounds, covering nearly 70 acres, are a wonderland of stunning gardens, glassy ponds and dark woods. Westerkerk, Amsterdam Amsterdam Amsterdam The traditional images of Holland picturesque windmills, wooden shoes and waving fields of tulips find their contrasts in the capital city of Amsterdam. Often described as a city with a split personality, Amsterdam blends a deeply historic and reserved core with a thoroughly modern tolerance that is unmatched anywhere else in the world. Medieval gables, time-worn churches and tranquil courtyards set the stage for the city s vital, exuberant culture. One hundred miles of canals expand outward in concentric circles like a cobweb, tracing their way through a city of amazingly diverse architecture from quaint 17th-century half-timbered houses to patrician Louis XIV manors. The decorative gables of the houses reach for the sky in a variety of shapes, revealing the age of the house and the status of the families that once occupied them. The scalloped skyline is best appreciated from the many gracefully arched bridges that span the canals Amsterdam is known as the City of 1,001 Bridges for a good reason! In Amsterdam s thriving café culture, a wide variety of ethnic foods can be found at the 700 or more restaurants tucked away in the city s winding side streets and lining the curves of its canals.
Deventer Deventer This Hanseatic League town has a rich history that reaches back to the ninth century when an Anglo-Saxon mission was founded here on the east bank of Ijssel River. Its Grote Kerk is a Romanesque basilica built on the grounds of Deventer s first church. The Town Hall consists of two impressive medieval buildings with grand façades. The 16th-century Weigh-House features turrets and a pinnacle that looms majestically above the Brink, Deventer s main square. Lined with shops and cafés, the Brink remains the center of activity in Deventer, as it has for centuries. Don t miss a chance to sample the town s famous pastry, a sweet honey cake called koek. The Hague The seat of the Dutch government and its Parliament, The Hague is the provincial capital of Holland. This elegant and beautiful city exudes a certain graciousness with open squares, several lovely canals and more than 700 public gardens. The Hague projects a formal lifestyle that befits its role as a diplomatic capital and world center of international peace and justice. The Upper and Lower Chambers of the Dutch Parliament occupy the grounds of the old Castle of the Counts. With a host of museums dedicated to the arts and sciences, The Hague wears a decidedly intellectual air. Housed in an elegant 17th-century palace, the famed Royal Picture Gallery, the Mauritshuis, is one of the most beautiful art museums in the world and houses a superb collection of Dutch, Flemish and German Old Masters. Rembrandt The Dutch Master The creator of around 2,300 paintings, drawings and etchings in his lifetime, Rembrandt Harmenszoon Van Rijn is celebrated as the most significant of the many talented Golden Age Dutch artists. Born in 1606 in Leiden, the Netherlands, Rembrandt was the son of a miller and dropped out of his university to pursue art. Famed for his portraits, landscapes and extraordinary etchings, Rembrandt drew his inspiration from the people and scenes that surrounded him. When no other subject interested him, he painted self-portraits, ultimately completing between 50 and 60 before his death in 1669. Rembrandt s work is characterized by his use of rich colors and a near obsession with the play of light and shadow in a scene. In spite of financial troubles and the tragic deaths of his wife and three of their four children within the period of just a few years, Rembrandt continued to paint and teach art for the rest of his life, leaving the world with an incredible legacy of artistic treasures. In some places, so little has changed that you can even recognize the views made famous by Delft s illustrious son, the Golden Age painter, Johannes Vermeer. For the majority of his life and career in the mid- 17th century, the artist lived on Markt, the city s market square surrounded by the spires of a cluster of historic churches and the majestic bulk of the old Town Hall. Veere The sleepy port of Veere is one of the prettiest towns in Holland. Neeltje Jans Showcased in the heart of Holland s Delta area is a proud testament to the Dutch engineering mastery over their natural arch rival. Through educational and playfully interactive displays that harness the beauty and power of water, the Delta Works Project exhibits the delicate balance of the country s relationship with the ever-encroaching waters of the sea. Bruges Nicknamed the Venice of the North, beautiful Bruges is a picturesque labyrinth of ivy-clad canals and cobbled streets. Located in the heart of Flemish Belgium, its Old Town market square is lined by a stately neo-gothic Provincial Court, the city s signature belfry tower and cloth hall, and cafés fronted by colorful table umbrellas. Nearby, underneath a 400-ft.-tall (122 m) brick spire, the Church of Our Lady houses the famous Madonna and Child sculpted by a young Michelangelo. Several art galleries and museums showcase priceless paintings from the revolutionary Flemish Primitive movement that evolved in Bruges in the 1420s. UNESCO The Historic Center of Bruges was designated by UNESCO as a World Heritage List site in 2000. It is distinguished by perfectly preserved Gothic architecture built during Bruges 13th-14th century prosperity as an international Hanseatic League trading port. Holland is a constitutional monarchy under Queen Beatrix of the House of Orange. Review the current state of affairs in the Netherlands, along with its economic and political future as a member of the European Union. This evening, enjoy a cruise through Amsterdam s scenic ring of canals. Day Three Excursion: Keukenhof Gardens. This morning, journey through the Dutch flower fields to the renowned Keukenhof Gardens, a 70-acre paradise of tulips and other flowers, complete with Europe s largest fountain and an amazing 700-tree labyrinth. Enjoy some time at leisure in Amsterdam this afternoon before the ship sails on to Kampen, where it will dock overnight. Gather with fellow travelers for a Welcome Reception and Dinner. Day Four Educational Focus: The Dutch Masters. In the 17th century, Holland enjoyed a period of excellence in politics, economics and the arts.
