International Seminar on the Occasion of World Statistics Day 2015 World Statistics: Sustainable Data for Sustainable Development Xi an, China 20-22 October, 2015 Information Note Organized by United Nations Statistics Division (UNSD) National Bureau of Statistics of China (NBS) Shanxi Provincial Government of China

Introduction The United Nations Statistics Division (UNSD), in collaboration with the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) of China and the Shanxi Provincial Government, will jointly organize the International Seminar with the theme World Statistics: Sustainable Data for Sustainable Development at Xi an, the capital city of Shanxi Province, China, from 20-22 October, 2015. A celebratory event on the occasion of World Statistics Day 2015 will be held in the morning of 20 October. The Statistics Conference of Countries along the Land and Maritime Silk Roads (referred to as Silk Road Conference) will be held back-to-back with the International Seminar on 19 October 2015, in Xi an, China. Simultaneous interpretation services will be available. Venue The Seminar will be held at Sofitel Xi an Hotel on Renmin Square, which is located in the center of the city. Sofitel Xi an on Renmin Square is a state-level hotel which is the main reception place of Shanxi Provincial Government. Hotel is richly endowed by nature, courtyard garden, elegant and pleasant scenery. In recent years, Sofitel Xi an on Renmin Square has received many international meetings or conferences such as Euro-Asia Economic Forum. Hotel Address: No.319 Dongxin Street, Shanxi Province, 710004, China Registration Registration for the Conference will start at 8:30am, Sunday, 18 October 2015 at the Registration Counter located at the Sofitel East Reception Desk of Sofitel Xi an hotel on Renmin Square. Participants are requested to register and obtain meeting badges at the Registration. Participants not register on 18 October 2015 are requested to get the meeting badges and register at the entrance Ballroom of Sofitel Xi an on Renmin Square Convention Center on 20 October 2015. For identification and security reasons, all participants are kindly requested to wear their meeting badges at all times during the Conference. Visa Participants from most countries are required to apply for visa to enter China. For detailed visa policies, please consult your Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Chinese Embassy or Consulate in your country. When you fill out the registration form, indicate whether you need the official visa documentation. Upon receipt of the

registration form, NBS will prepare and send the official visa documentation to those who need it. Accommodation Group reservations have been made at preferential rates with Sofitel Xi an Hotel on Renmin Square, Grand Mercure Hotel on Xi an Renmin Square and Mercure Hotel on Xi an Renmin Square for different room types. Three hotels are very close from each other. The participants will need to make their own room reservations. Please be advised that all three hotels are running high occupancy during the meeting period from 19 to 22 October, so the participants are suggested to make room reservations as soon as possible. The participants are strongly recommended to stay at above mentioned three hotels where a block of rooms have been secured for the participants at special discounted rates. Transportation from Airport to Hotel Participants will be picked up by the NBS from Xi an Xianyang International Airport to Sofitel Xi an on Renmin Square. Public Transportation

- By Airport Bus. The participants could take the route No.2 Airport Bus to Xi an Railway Station (about 1.5 hours), the ticket fare is RMB 26 per person, then take the taxi to Sofitel hotel (about 2 km, taxi fare is around RMB 12). - By taxi. The taxi fare from Xi an Xianyang International Airport to Sofitel Xi an on Renmin Square is around RMB 100. Meal Arrangement During the meeting, the participants could dine at Azur and Churassco restaurant, located at the East wing of Sofitel Xian on Renmin Square. The price of the meal is: Lunch Buffet--RMB 150 per person; Dinner Buffet--RMB 230 per person. There are many other fine restaurants around the Hotel. The well-known Xi an Muslim Snack Street is about 20 minutes walk (taxi fare is around RMB 10) from the Hotel. As for the local Shannxi food, the participants could go to Yong-Xing-Fang or Xi an Fan-Zhuang. The participants could take taxi to those restaurants, and the taxi fare well be around RMB 12. About Xi an Xi'an is the capital of Shaanxi Province, located in the northwest of the People's Republic of China, in the center of the Guanzhong Plain. As one of the most famous ancient cities in China, Xi an was known as Chang'an before the Ming Dynasty. Xi'an is the starting point of the Silk Road and home to the Terracotta Army of Emperor Qin Shi Huang. Since the 1990s, as part of the economic revival of interior China especially for the central and northwest regions, the city of Xi'an has re-emerged as an important cultural, industrial and educational centre in the central-northwest region of China, with facilities for research and development, national security and China's space exploration program. Xi'an currently holds sub-provincial status, administering 9 districts and 4 counties. Weather The weather becomes colder in the middle October. The average daily high temperature is about 20 C, and at night it drops to about 12 C Long-sleeve shirts, thin coats and thick coats are all needed for the changeable weather in October. Please prepare rain wear and always remember to bring spare clothes when you are out in case of temperature change. Currency The Chinese currency is RMB. The current exchange rate is about 1 USD: 6.4 RMB. Major foreign currencies can be exchanged at banks, hotels, and airports. Most hotels, restaurants and shops accept major international credit cards including Visa and Master Card. Time The standard time used in all regions of China is 8 hours ahead of GMT.
