Report of Superintendent of Schools To the Superintending School Committee and Citizens of Jackman; I herewith submit my annual report as Superintendent of Schools. Our enrollment during the present year has been large except at the Station School where the average attendance has been from 7 to 9. The enrollment, classification and grading of the various schools is as follows: HIGH SCHOOL Charles H. Diehl, Principal; Miss Viola B. Curtis, Assistant. Post-graduates, 2; Seniors, 8; Juniors, 10; Sophomores, 20; Freshmen, 10. Of these 14 are residents of Moose River, two of Skinner, one of Connecticut, the remainder being residents of Jackman. The tuition rate based on operating costs was $82.39 per capita for the school year 1933-34. Our school is in excellent condition and both teachers are doing excellent work. It would however greatly improve conditions if a part time third teacher were available as we are greatly limited as to the subjects we can offer, and both teachers are obliged to teach more periods than are permitted by State regulations. For details of the work I refer you to Mr. Diehl's report. GRAMMAR SCHOOL Mrs. Anne Nichols, Teacher Grade VIII, 10; Grade VII, 11; Grade VI, 12. Here the chief difficulty is the number of classes rather than the number of pupils. Upper grades who are being prepared for high school need longer recitation periods than are possible under present conditions. I am satisfied however that Mrs. Nichols is accomplishing all that is possible in the time at her disposal. PRIMARY SCHOOL Mrs. Vesta R. Williams, Teacher Grade V, 10; Grade IV, 7; Grade III, 6; Grade II, 4; Grade 1, 8. Here again the same condition prevails, too many classes for best results. If money for a third teacher were available I would advise the use of the Teachers' Room for recitation purposes un-

46 til such time as an addition to the building is possible. Here a properly qualified teacher could instruct classes from both high school and grades and make better work possible in all departments. STATION SCHOOL Mrs. Maxie Johnston, Teacher The enrollment here has been very small this year, several pupils who live within the district preferring to attend at the high school building on account of the better facilities for organized play. Unless there is an increase next year it may be well to close this school temporarily at least and convey thte pupils to the high school which can probably be done at a cost approximating what we now pay for janitor service. This would make funds available for an additional teacher at the high school, and permit better grading arrangements at a minimum of expense to the town. REPAIRS During the past year only a small amount of repair work has been done, the most important item being the installation of a new furnace in the high school building. This is of unusual size and has made it much easier to heat the building in extremely cold weather. It was hoped that Federal funds would be available for the addition of a wing which would provide additional room for both high school and grade pupils. As no money fori this purpose has been forthcoming as yet, it will be necessary for the town to assume the cost of any necessary repairs. FINANCES, ETC. As you are all aware bills have been presented to the legislature which if passed will considerably increase the State aid allotted to towns for educational purposes. I am however informed that such laws if passed cannot affect the revenues for the school year 1935-36. It will therefore be necessary for us to make our recommendations for appropriations on the same basis as in past years. These recommendations have been submitted to the Budget Committee for their consideration and approval. Respectfully submitted, RUSSELL S. TAYLOR, Supt. of Schools

Report of Jackman High School To Mr. Russell S. Taylor, Superintendent, the Members of the Superintending School Committee, and Citizens of Jackman: I am submitting my annual report as Principal of Jackman High School. The enrollment at present is forty-seven with twenty-four boys and twenty-three girls. The registration by classes is as follows: Senior Junior Sophomore.. Freshman... Post graduate 8 9 20 9 1 The curriculum has not been changed from last year except that a course in Social Science has been introduced. This course follows and is connected with a similar course in the seventh and eighth grades. The regular rotation of courses occurred, American History being offered in place of Ancient History and Algebra II in place of Plane Geometry. Extra-Curricula activities include a fair given in the fall, basketball for both boys and girls, and four one-act plays. A Senior play and Junior Prize Speaking will take place in the spring term. We hope to send a representative to the County Prize Speaking Contest. The fair was generously supported, and netted a good sum to help carry on other school activities. The basketball teams were fairly successful this year. The boys won four out of six games, while the girls won one and lost one. Both teams give promise of having a good season next year, as only one boy and one girl will be lost from the two squads by graduation. The one-act plays were given on the last night of the winter term. A five-piece orchestra was started this year, but has made no public appearance yet. -We are attempting to provide an opportunity for participation in outside activities for as many students as possible. For instance, twelve girls and ten boys played in basketball, and all who were qualified were allowed to play in actual competition. The one-act plays showed the ability of approximately twenty-

five pupils. In this way opportunity is given to a greater number instead of to a few. Cooperation between students and faculty has been noticeably better this year. I wish to acknowledge my appreciation of the cooperation of Mr. Taylor, the School Committee, and the citizens of Jackman. In return I promise the continued loyalty of the faculty of Jackman High School. Respectfully submitted, CHARLES H. DIEHL, Principal of Jackman High School
