Redfield, LAB 50, AB 54, PhD 61, is the Edward Olson Distinguished Service Professor Emeritus in the Committee on Social Thought, Program on the Ancient World, Department of Anthropology, and the College at the University of Chicago. He has written Nature and Culture in the Iliad: The Tragedy of Hector; The Locrian Maidens: Love and Death in Greek Italy; and articles on Homer, Herodotus, Plato, and Greek society, especially the ancient Greeks of Italy. His teaching is focused on Greek language, literature, and social history as they can be understood through theories of modern linguistics and anthropology. He received the Quantrell Teaching Award for 1965 and 1987.

Dear Alumni, Parents, Families, and Friends, Seductive Sicily, that stepping stone between Europe and Africa, bears traces of the many civilizations that have conquered her, from the Phoenicians, Greeks, and Romans, to the Arabs, Normans, and more. Please join us in October of 2018 to circumnavigate this stunning island aboard the legendary sailing yacht Sea Cloud. Autumn, when the heat and crowds of summer are gone, is the perfect time to discover Sicily s pearls of antiquity aboard a four-masted barque. We are delighted that James M. Redfield, Professor Emeritus, will be leading this program. An authority on the ancient Greeks of Italy, Dr. Redfield will be joined by a curator from The Metropolitan Museum of Art, a Harvard University professor, and other distinguished experts. Embark Sea Cloud in Valletta, Malta, and step ashore in Syracuse, once Athens rival in wealth and culture. Discover its wellpreserved Greek and Roman theaters and visit a Baroque palazzo whose owner will welcome us for a tour. In Lipari, the archaeological museum is a must-see, and in the capital city of Palermo, an exclusive reception at the Palazzo Gangi brings the ballroom scene from Visconti s The Leopard, filmed here, to life. From Trapani, view the Greek temple of Segesta before choosing an excursion to the medieval hilltop town of Erice or to Mazara del Vallo, home to the 2,400-yearold Dancing Satyr, a spectacular seven-foot bronze statue. Naples Conclude in Naples, or remain in Italy for optional postlude. ITALY Tyrrhenian Sea Palermo Trapani Monreale Segesta SICILY Agrigento Porto Empedocle Lipari Syracuse Ionian Sea I hope you will join us on this perennially popular voyage, which was named one of 50 Tours of a Lifetime by National Geographic Traveler, to discover the fascinating history and spectacular beauty of Sicily. Sicily by Sail Valletta to Naples Aboard Sea Cloud October 1 9, 2018 An optional two-night prelude in Valletta, Malta is offered from September 29 October 2. MONDAY, OCTOBER 1: DEPARTURE Depart the U.S. on an overnight flight to Malta. TUESDAY, OCTOBER 2: VALLETTA, MALTA / SEA CLOUD Arrive in Valletta and gather for lunch before transferring to the awaiting Sea Cloud. Enjoy a bon voyage toast on deck as we sail out of the historic harbor en route to Sicily. L,D WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 3: SYRACUSE (SICILY) ITALY Splendid Syracuse, once the largest city in the ancient world, was a formidable rival to Athens. Discover the cathedral built on the ruins of the Temple of Athena and admire dramatic, well-preserved theaters where Aeschylus plays were performed. By special invitation, Barone Beneventano will welcome us to his Baroque palazzo for a tour and light refreshments. In the early evening the captain hosts a welcome reception and dinner. B,L,R,D THURSDAY, OCTOBER 4: PORTO EMPEDOCLE / AGRIGENTO (SICILY) Pindar called Agrigento the most beautiful city built by mortal men and the nearby ruins of the Valley of the Temples demonstrate why. The Temple of Concord, perhaps the bestpreserved Greek temple in the world, inspired the UNESCO logo. B,L,D FRIDAY, OCTOBER 5: TRAPANI / SEGESTA (SICILY) Explore Segesta s splendid Doric temple, strangely unfinished, whose columns are said to produce organ-like tones on windy days. Later you may visit either Erice a hilltop medieval town whose Norman castle sits atop the ruins of a temple of Venus or Mazara del Vallo, to see its 2,400-year-old, seven-foot bronze statue the Dancing Satyr, rescued from the sea by fishermen in 1998. Valley of Temples, Agrigento, photo by radar60 Sea Cloud SATURDAY, OCTOBER 6: PALERMO (SICILY) Sicily s capital of Palermo was the envy of Europe under the Normans, whose enlightened rule produced the golden mosaics we will see in the 12th-century Palatine Chapel, described by Guy de Maupassant as the most surprising religious jewel ever dreamt of. After lunch on board, drive to Monreale to admire the brilliant mosaics in the magnificent Norman cathedral before a special reception at Palazzo Gangi, where the ballroom scene in The Leopard was filmed. B,L,D SUNDAY, OCTOBER 7: LIPARI (AEOLIAN ISLANDS) Early this morning we sail through the Aeolian archipelago, volcanic islands off the north coast of Sicily. Tender ashore to Lipari, which has known uninterrupted occupation since the Neolithic Age. The Archaeological Museum within the fortress walls boasts a superb collection of artifacts, including extraordinary masks from this and other islands. B,L,D MONDAY, OCTOBER 8: AT SEA Experience the thrill of sailing aboard our fine ship, attending lectures and delighting in the grace and romance of a bygone era of travel. B,L,D TUESDAY, OCTOBER 9: NAPLES, ITALY / RETURN Disembark Sea Cloud in Naples this morning and transfer to the airport for the flights home, or remain on board for the optional postlude. B An optional three-night postlude in Sorrento is offered from October 9-12. This itinerary is subject to change at the discretion of the University of Chicago and Arrangements Abroad. With her billowing sails, rich mahogany and gleaming brass, the legendary Sea Cloud travels under 32,000 square feet of billowing sails trimmed by hand. The original owners of Sea Cloud, heiress Marjorie Merriweather Post and financier E. F. Hutton, desired a craft like no other. They spared no expense to create the largest private sailing ship ever built and in 1931, Sea Cloud was launched. In the 30s and 40s, as she sailed the world, the four-masted beauty was host to leaders including Duke and Duchess of Windsor, Franklin D. Roosevelt, and Sweden s King Gustavus V. Now carefully restored by a team of master craftspeople, this great lady continues to offer elegant quarters, fine dining, and impeccable service. Praised by the world s most discerning travelers and travel writers, Sea Cloud receives consistent high rankings from Condé Nast Traveler. n CRUISE RATES (Per Person) Cabins Decks Double Rates Single Rates Cabins 14 to 17 Promenade Deck $8,999 $8,999 Upper/lower twin beds, shower.
