INTRODUCTION Welcome to West Virginia! West Virginia is fortunate to have many accessible locations where everyone including children, older adults and individuals with disabilities can have fun! You can find information on these attractions through various state agencies and on-line, but this Guide is an attempt to put as much information as possible in one place. By encouraging sites across the state to complete and return surveys, based on Americans with Disabilities Act Accessibility Guidelines (ADAAG), information was collected to give both residents and visitors a tool to help identify recreation sites that can accommodate a wide range of needs. Sites in 52 of 55 counties responded to the survey and are included in this Guide. In addition to site listings, the Guide includes other information on travel in West Virginia, such as public and commercial transportation providers, medical equipment and supply vendors, 24-hour emergency care centers and dialysis centers. You also can find information on Convention and Visitor Bureaus, Visitor and Welcome Centers and Fairs and Festivals across the state. The Guide does not include restaurants, hotels or individual businesses unless the site has achieved some distinction or is associated with a tourist destination point. - 1 -

HOW TO USE THIS GUIDE For the convenience of users, this Guide includes an alphabetical Site Index, as well as both a County Index and an Activity Index to help you find a recreation activity by name, location or type. Each site page contains five important pieces of information: Mailing address, phone number, e-mail address and web site (when available) Map of the county where the site is located State map to show the county s location within the state Description of the site List of accessible features If a feature of the site meets ADA guidelines, the Universal Symbol of Accessibility will appear in the list of features. This list will also indicate if the feature is not fully accessible or not applicable to the location. Please note - a self-reporting survey was used to compile the information in this Guide; every attempt was made to verify the accuracy of the information but the publishers of this Guide take no responsibility for errors or inaccuracies. Additional information is available by contacting the individual site. Symbols used in this Guide include: ACCESSIBLE MEETS REQUIRED ADA STANDARDS NOT ACCESSIBLE DOES NOT MEET ALL REQUIRED ADA STANDARDS NOT APPLICABLE TO THIS SITE - 2 -

TRAVELING IN WEST VIRGINIA There are some important things to consider while traveling in our state. The most obvious feature of West Virginia is the Appalachian Mountains which cover almost 100% of the land area. It s a good idea to make sure your vehicle has been properly maintained and to keep your eyes open for wildlife while driving! Getting Around You may be traveling to West Virginia by private vehicle or by Amtrak, Greyhound or commercial airline. Special accommodations can make your trip more enjoyable. If you require assistance or need information on any of these commercial transportation systems, please call them in advance. A list of airports and stations for Amtrak and Greyhound can be found in the Resources section of this Guide. In addition, many of West Virginia s public transportation providers are available to help you get around in town or around the state. Information about these providers also can be found in the Resources section. West Virginia Courtesy Patrol (WVCP) The WVCP operates twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week to serve the traveling public. Twenty-five well-marked FORD F-150 s patrol eight interstates and five corridors in twenty-nine counties throughout the state. The WVCP assists stranded motorists, removes hazards from the roadway thereby reducing the chance of secondary accidents, provides gas or directions, changes a flat tire and, in general, works to enhance the safety of our state's - 3 -

highways. This is the only Courtesy Patrol Program in the nation to operate statewide and around the clock. Trip Tips In general, there are suggestions for successful travel everyone should follow. Check that you have the proper amount of medication for the number of days your trip will last. Make sure mobility aids and/or sensory aids are in working order and, if the aides are battery powered, that you have extra batteries. Always remember to take your insurance provider(s) information and emergency contact(s) information with you on your trip. 211 211 is an information and referral resource available free of charge to both residents and visitors to West Virginia. If your trip is interrupted due to a medical or personal emergency, you can dial 211 free from any telephone to speak with someone about what services might be available to help. 211 does not provide tourism information it is intended only to help you identify social services and other resources. Travel Information Maps of West Virginia can be obtained through local Convention and Visitors Bureaus, at Visitor and Welcome Centers across the state, or by calling the West Virginia Division of Tourism at 1-800-CALLWVA (1-800-225-5982). - 4 -
