AKDN in Tanzania For more than a century, the agencies of the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN) have been contributing to the social, economic and cultural development of Tanzania. AKDN s social agencies work with marginalised populations to achieve selfreliance through long-term, community-based and participatory approaches. Economic development activities of the AKDN have significantly contributed to new sustainable enterprises and created jobs through long-term investments. Programmes in culture restore and rehabilitate historic structures and public spaces in ways that encourage social, economic and cultural development. In recognition of the AKDN s long and substantial contribution to the socioeconomic development of the country, an Agreement of Cooperation was signed with the United Republic of Tanzania in 1991 and subsequently revised and endorsed in 2001. Facts and highlights In 2016, Aga Khan University (AKU) opened a school of nursing and midwifery in Dar es Salaam at the Salama house. The first Aga Khan Girls School opened in Zanzibar in 1905. In July 2009, the USD $ 2.4 million revitalisation of Forodhani Park in Zanzibar s Historic Stone Town was completed. The 70-bed Aga Khan Hospital is the only hospital in Tanzania to be awarded the ISO 9001: 2000 Certification for high quality standards in healthcare. Industrial Promotion Services (IPS) is widely recognised for its professional management capability; its achievements in project development; and for promoting investment with a social conscience.
