EL RAVAL El Raval is a neighbourhood in the Ciutat Vella district of Barcelona. The area, especially the part closest to the port, was also informally known as Chinatown. El Raval is one of the two historical neighbourhoods that border La Rambla, the other being the Gothic Quarter, and contains some 50,000 people. El Raval has changed significantly in recent years and due to its central location has become a minor attraction of Barcelona. It currently has a very diverse immigrant community and is home to many restaurants, and hang out spots. OVERNIGHT IN BARCELONA Day 3 - Monday March 12 DEPART FOR THE MUSEUM

10:00AM 11:30AM 12:00PM 1:30PM 3:00PM PICASSO MUSEUM Phone: +34 93 256 30 22 The Museu Picasso houses one of the most extensive collections of artworks by the 20th-century Spanish artist Pablo Picasso. With 4,251 works exhibited by the painter, the museum has one of the most complete permanent collections of works. The museum is housed in five adjoining medieval palaces in Barcelona's La Ribera and is located on Montcada Street in the (Bank District) of Barcelona. It opened to the public on 9 March 1963, becoming the first museum dedicated to Picasso's work and the only one created during the artist's life. It has since been declared a museum of national interest by the Government of Catalonia. Highlights of the collection include two of his first major works, The First Communion (1896), and Science and Charity (1897). In particular, the Museu Picasso reveals Picasso's relationship with the city of Barcelona, a relationship that was shaped in his youth and adolescence, and continued until his death. Montcada, 15-23, Barcelona,, 08003 EL BORN El Born refers to the lower section of the La Ribera district, just below Carrer de la Princesa, and leading to Barceloneta. Named after the 19th century market on carrer del Comerc that dominates the area, this is one of the trendiest and most touristic districts in the old city. It is a popular place for expats and contains many art boutiques, bars and cafes. Carrer de Santa Maria, 4, Barcelona,, 08003 GOTHIC QUARTER The Gothic Quarter is the centre of the old city of Barcelona. It stretches from La Rambla to Via Laietana, and from the Mediterranean seafront to Ronda de Sant Pere. It is a part of Ciutat Vella district. The quarter was built primarily in the late 19th and early 20th century, though several buildings date from medieval times. Remains of the squared Roman Wall can be seen around Tapineria and Sots-Tinent Navarro to the north, Avinguda de la Catedral and Placa Nova to the west and Carrer de la Palla to the south. El Call, the medieval Jewish quarter, is located within this area too. The Barri Gotic retains a labyrinthine street plan, with many small streets opening out into squares. Most of the quarter is closed to regular traffic although open to service vehicles and taxis. LA RAMBLA La Rambla is a street in central Barcelona, popular with tourists and locals alike. A tree-lined pedestrian mall, it stretches for 1.2 kilometres connecting Placa de Catalunya in the centre with the Christopher Columbus Monument at Port Vell. La Rambla forms the boundary between the quarters of Barri Gotic, to the east, and El Raval, to the west. The Spanish poet Federico Garcia Lorca once said that La Rambla was "the only street in the world which I wish would never end." La Rambla, Barcelona,, 08002 TIME FOR SOUVENIR SHOPPING LUNCH AT LA BOQUERIA AT OWN EXPENSE MERCAT DE SANT JOSEP DE LA BOQUERIA The Mercat de Sant Josep de la Boqueria, often simply referred to as La Boqueria is a large public market in the Ciutat Vella district and one of the city's prominent tourist landmarks. The first mention of La Boqueria dates back to 1217. Tables installed near the old city gate were mostly selling meat. The market was set up unofficially by the merchants who tried to sell some of their products before entering the city so that they can save on the taxes. The name La Boqueria came from the word "boc", which means goat, the most popular meat sold at the time. The open-air market gained popularity around the eighteenth century, along with La Rambla, and vendors from nearby towns started to come to try selling their goods as well. Works on a roof began in 1840 on St. Joseph's Day and even though the market gained its official status the same year, the roof wasn't finished until 1853. The market was also divided into different sectors based on the products of the merchants. The metal roof was the landmark of the modernization of the market. Not only the sanitation improved gradually after this, but the overall appearance of the market as well. The sellers offering their products there today are mostly fourth-generation La Boqueria merchants representing both the long traditions of the market and the new ideas that keep it exciting and dynamically evolving. At present, there is barely any food in Spain that cannot be found here; and in addition to the wide range of food products, it also offers artisan handicrafts and farmer's shops. La Rambla, 91, Barcelona,, 08001 DEPART FOR THE PARK

4:00PM 6:00PM 7:00PM 9:00PM PARC DE LA CIUTADELLA Located on the northeastern edge of Ciutat Vella district, The Parc de la Ciutadella is very idyllic and probably the greenest oasis in the megacity of Barcelona. It invites you to relax, to rebound and to go for long walks, as well as for a picnic. For decades following its creation in the mid-19th century, this park was the city's only green space. The 70-acre grounds include the city zoo, the Palau del Parlament de Catalunya, a small lake, museums, and a large fountain designed by Josep Fontsere. Passeig de Picasso, 21, Barcelona,, 08003 DEPART FOR DINNER OVERNIGHT IN BARCELONA Day 4 - Tuesday March 13 10:00AM 12:00PM DEPART FOR THE PARK PARK GUELL Park Guell is a public park system composed of gardens and architectonic elements. With urbanization in mind, Eusebi Guell assigned the design of the park to Antoni Gaudi, a renowned architect and the face of Catalan modernism. The park was built between 1900 and 1914 and was officially opened as a public park in 1926. In 1984, UNESCO declared the park a World Heritage Site under "Works of Antoni Gaudi". Guell and Gaudi imagined the park to be an organized grouping of high-quality homes, decked out with all the latest technological advancements to ensure maximum comfort, finished off with an artistic touch. They also envisioned a community strongly influenced by symbolism, since, in the common elements of the park, they were trying to synthesize many of the political and religious ideals shared by patron and architect. Therefore, there are noticeable concepts originating from political Catalanism - especially in the entrance stairway where the Catalonian countries are represented - and from Catholicism - the Monumento al Calvario, originally designed to be a chapel. The mythological elements are also important. Apparently, Guell and Gaudi's conception of the park was also inspired by the Temple of Apollo of Delphi. Park Guell is the reflection of Gaudi's artistic abundance, which belongs to his naturalist phase (first decade of the 20th century). During this period, the architect perfected his personal style through inspiration from organic shapes. In the design of Park Guell, Gaudi unleashed all his architectonic genius and put to practice much of his innovative structural solutions that would become the symbol of his organic style and that would culminate in the creation of the Sagrada Familia., Barcelona,, 08024 DEPART FOR EIXAMPLE DISTRICT TIME FOR LUNCH NEAR SAGRADA FAMILIA

2:30PM 4:30PM 6:00PM 7:00PM 8:30PM 9:00PM LA SAGRADA FAMILIA The Basilica i Temple Expiatori de la Sagrada Familia, or La Sagrada Familia, is a large Roman Catholic church designed by Catalan Spanish architect Antoni Gaudi. Gaudi's work on the building is part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and in November 2010 Pope Benedict XVI consecrated and proclaimed it a minor basilica, as distinct from a cathedral, which must be the seat of a bishop. Construction of Sagrada Familia commenced in 1882 by architect Francisco Paula de Villar with Gaudi becoming involved in 1883 after Francisco resigned as the head architect. Taking over the project, Gaudi transformed it with his architectural and engineering style, combining Gothic and curvilinear Art Nouveau forms. Gaudi devoted his last years to the project, and at the time of his death at age 73 in 1926, less than a quarter of the project was complete. Sagrada Familia's construction progressed slowly, as it relied on private donations and was interrupted by the Spanish Civil War, only to resume sunteady progress in the 1950s. Construction passed the midpoint in 2010 with some of the project's greatest challenges remaining and an anticipated completion date of 2026, the centenary of Gaudi's death. The basilica has a long history of dividing the citizens of Barcelona: over the initial possibility it might compete with Barcelona's cathedral, over Gaudi's design itself, over the possibility that work after Gaudi's death disregarded his design, and the 2007 proposal to build an underground tunnel of Spain's high-speed rail link to France which could disturb its stability. Carrer de Mallorca, 401, Barcelona,, 08013 DEPART FOR CASA BATTLO CASA BATLLO Casa Batllo is a renowned building located in the centre of Barcelona and is one of Antoni Gaudi's masterpieces. A remodel of a previously built house, it was redesigned in 1904 by Gaudi and has been refurbished several times after that. The local name for the building is Casa dels ossos. or House of Bones, as it has a skeletal organic quality. Like everything Gaudi designed, it is only identifiable as Modernisme or Art Nouveau in the broadest sense. The ground floor, in particular, has unusual tracery, irregular oval windows, and flowing sculpted stone work. There are few straight lines, and much of the facade is decorated with a colourful mosaic made of broken ceramic tiles. The roof is arched and was likened to the back of a dragon or dinosaur. A common theory about the building is that the rounded feature to the left of centre, terminating at the top in a turret and cross, represents the lance of Saint George, the patron saint of Catalonia, which has been plunged into the back of the dragon. Passeig de Gracia, 43, Barcelona,, 08007 EVENING WALK IN BARCELONETA OVERNIGHT IN BARCELONA Day 5 - Wednesday March 14 7:00AM DEPART FOR MONTSERRAT About 1-2hr drive.

10:00AM 12:00PM MONTSERRAT Montserrat, meaning "serrated mountain", is ideally located to play an important role in the cultural and spiritual life of Catalonia. It is Catalonia's most important religious retreat and groups of young people from Barcelona and all over Catalonia make overnight hikes at least once in their lives to watch the sunrise from the heights of Montserrat. At 4,055 feet above the valley floor, Montserrat is the highest point of the Catalan lowlands, and stands central to the most populated part of Catalonia. Montserrat's highest point, Sant Jeroni, can be reached by a footpath from the top station of the Funicular de Sant Joan. From Sant Jeroni, almost all of Catalonia can be seen, and on a clear day the island of Mallorca is visible. Santa Maria de Montserrat is a Benedictine abbey located on the mountain of Montserrat. It is notable for enshrining the image of the Virgin of Montserrat. The monastery was founded in the 10th century and is still in function to this day with over 150 monks. The Virgin of Montserrat (the black virgin), is Catalonia's favourite saint, and is located in the sanctuary of the Mare de Deu de Montserrat, next to the Benedictine monastery nestling in the towers and crags of the mountain. The Basilica houses a museum with works of art by many prominent painters and sculptors including works by El Greco, Dali, Picasso and more. The Publicacions de l'abadia de Montserrat, a publishing house, one of the oldest presses in the world still running, with its first book published in 1499. The Escolania, Montserrat's Boys' Choir, is one of the oldest in Europe, and performs during religious ceremonies and communal prayers in the basilica. Montserrat, Barcelona,, 08199 TIME FOR LUNCH AT MONTSERRAT AT OWN EXPENSE ESCOLANIA BOYS' CHOIR SALVE AND VIROLAI PERFORMANCE Montserrat is home to one of the oldest boys' choirs in Europe. Documents testify to the existence of a religious and music school in Montserrat as far back as the 14th century. The Escolania now accompanies religious ceremonies and communal prayers in the basilica. All the choir members receive a high standard of musical training, along with human and intellectual education. The choir enjoys international fame and prestige, giving concert performances all over the world, as well as building up a large catalogue of recording. Boys join the Choir School at 4th level of Primary School and the 5th level if place is available, and are selected on the basis of voice and musical theory, school performance, and adaptation and sociability. The Virolai is the hymn dedicated to the Virgin of Montserrat, known also as the "Rosa de Abril" or April Rose in reference to the beginning of the poem. It was composed by Fr. Jacint Verdaguer and was published during the Artistic and Musical Competition held on the celebration of the Millennium of Montserrat, 1880. Through the same competition, the award of a golden piccolo would be given for the best adaptation of the text of Verdaguer. On the 25th of April of the same year, a winner was declared - amid 70 different compositions, Josep Rodoreda won the prize. 2:30PM 4:30PM 6:30PM 8:30PM TEBES WALKING TRAIL Easy excursion that allows people to visit the ruins of the ancient churches of San Juan, San Onofre and Santa Magdalena. During the tour, visitors will pass through sunny and shady areas, with a wide variety of vegetation, both in composition and in form. A very complete tour, from a nature and cultural standpoint, visitors are given a clear idea of what the mountain of Montserrat is really like in a relatively short space of time. RETURN TO BARCELONA About 1-2hr drive. OVERNIGHT IN BARCELONA Day 6 - Thursday March 15 DEPART FOR PALACE OF CATALAN MUSIC

10:00AM 11:30AM 12:30PM 1:30PM 2:30PM 3:30PM 5:00PM PALACE OF CATALAN MUSIC Phone: 902 475 485 The Palau de la Musica Catalana is a concert hall in Barcelona. Designed in the Catalan modernista style by the architect Lluis Domenech i Montaner, it was built between 1905 and 1908 for the Orfeo Catala, a choral society founded in 1891 that was a leading force in the Catalan cultural movement that came to be known as the Catalan Rebirth. The Palau won the architect an award from the Barcelona City Council in 1909, given to the best building built during the previous year. Between 1982 and 1989, the building underwent extensive restoration, remodelling, and extension under the direction of architects Oscar Tusquets and Carles Diaz. In 1997, the Palau de la Musica Catalana was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site along with Hospital de Sant Pau. Today, more than half a million people a year attend musical performances in the Palau that range from symphonic and chamber music to jazz and Canco (Catalan song). C/ Palau de la Musica, 4-6, Barcelona,, 08003 DEPART FOR MONTJUIC AREA TIME FOR LUNCH IN MONTJUIC AREA AT OWN EXPENSE MONTJUIC CASTLE Phone: +34 93 256 44 40 Standing on a vantage point 173 metres above the port, Montjuic Castle commands stunning views of the city. Now a peaceable place, the memory of this fortress endures in Barcelona as a symbol of repression but also of the city's struggles during different periods in its history. The top of Montjuic is the ideal place for a bastion of defence, with 360 degree views of the city below. However, this military enclave wasn't built until the Reapers War in 1640. In 1652, the fortress, which stands on the site of a watchtower, came under royal ownership and, some 50 years later, was one of the key defence points in the War of the Spanish Succession, between 1705 and 1714. In the middle of the 18th century, the military engineer, Juan Martin Cermeno, was commissioned to restore the castle which had been badly damaged during the war, and its current appearance dates from this time. The castle has launched bombing raids on the city on a number of occasions and it has also been used as a prison. On 15th October 1940, the president of the Catalan government, Lluis Companys, was executed by firing squad at the castle. The castle was used as a military prison until 1960 when it was given back to the city and used as an army base. Three years later, Franco opened a weapons museum in the castle. In 2007, the castle came under the ownership of Barcelona City Council and, as a result, now belongs to all the citizens of Barcelona. Carretera de Montjuic, 66, Barcelona,, 08038 MONTJUIC CABLE CAR The Montjuic cable car is the most modern and attractive way to see the Barcelona skyline against the sea. Go up to Montjuic Castle and enjoy stunning views. Look over the city from the sky as you climb to Montjuic Castle. The modern cars show Barcelona landmarks like the Sagrada Familia and the Agbar Tower and offer splendid views of the port area. Avenida Miramar, 30, Barcelona,, 08038 NATIONAL ART MUSEUM OF CATALONIA Phone: + 34 93 622 03 75 The Museu Nacional d'art de Catalunya is located in the Palau Nacional of Montjuic, constructed for the International Exposition of 1929. In 1934 it opened its doors as the Museu d'art de Catalunya, bringing together the medieval collection. Subsequently, in 1995, then as the Museu Nacional d'art de Catalunya, the new rooms of Romanesque art were inaugurated, and in a successive way the public presentation of the collection was extended, a process that ended in 2004 with the integration of modern art. Visiting the museum you can see the best collection of Romanesque mural painting in the world and the most representative artists of Catalan Modernism, such as Gaudi or Casas. Gothic art, great European Renaissance and Baroque painters, for example Tiziano or Velezquez, and the collection of photography, complete the collection. The major strength, quality and versatility of the collection allows you to have a 360 degree experience: Before, during and after your visit. We recommend you explore the collection and the history of the building to discover the secrets. Palau Nacional, Parc de Montjuic, Barcelona,, 08038 DEPART FOR POBLE ESPANYOL

5:30PM 6:30PM 8:30PM 9:00PM POBLE ESPANYOL Phone: +34 93 508 63 10 The Poble Espanyol is an architectural museum featuring exhibits on contemporary art with streets, houses, parks, theater, school, restaurants, and artisan workshops. The museum was built for the 1929 Barcelona International Exposition as an exhibit of the architecture and culture of Spain. The idea was promoted by the Catalan architect Puig Cadafalch and the project was realized by architects Francesc Folguera and Ramon Reventos, art critic Miquel Utrillo, and painter Xavier Nogues. The four professionals visited over 600,000 sites in Spain to collect the to bring together the main characteristics of the peoples of Spain. Although it was planned to be demolished when the International Exhibition was over, the museum was preserved because of its great success. The recreated village still contains the streets, squares and facades of the different areas of Spain. The village hosts many different events including gastronomic festivals, concerts in summer, flamenco shows, private events such as weddings, and children's activities. The Poble Espanyol exhibits more than 30 artisans who regularly work within the village making blown glass, leather, ceramics, jewelry, masks, baskets, and Spanish guitars. They create handmade items which are sold to the visitors. The Poble Espanyol also contains rides, stores with gourmet products, and restaurants or bars with cuisine from the different regions of Spain. Avenida de Francesc Ferrer i Guardia, 13, 08038,, FLAMENCO DINNER AND SHOW MAGIC FOUNTAIN OF MONTJUIC The Magic Fountain was designed by Carles Buigas, who had designed illuminated fountains as early as 1922. The site where the fountain was constructed was the previous location of The Four Columns. The columns, representative of the Catalanism movement, were demolished in 1928 under the orders of Prime Minister Miguel Primo de Rivera and were re-erected in 2010 a few meters away from the original location. Buigas submitted his design a year before the exhibition, with many calling the plan too ambitious, with too little time to complete. The construction project utilized over 3000 workers. The first show took place on May 19, 1929, the day before the start of the Exposition. The fountain was badly damaged in the Spanish Civil War and did not operate until 1955, after Buigas oversaw needed repairs. In the 1980s, music was incorporated with the light show and the fountain, along with the Museu Nacional, was completely restored prior to the 1992 Summer Olympics, held at Montjuic. Performances include film, classical, and modern music, such as The Godfather, The Lord of the Rings, Gladiator, a Spanish zarzuela movement, "Barcelona" by Freddie Mercury and Montserrat Caballe, and modern pop songs. Performances take place at half-hour intervals every weekend, with weekends extended during the summer season. Pack for tomorrow's departure. PIAZZA NAVONA Piazza Navona is a city square in Rome. It is built on the site of the Stadium of Domitian, built in 1st century AD, and follows the form of the open space of the stadium. PANTHEON The Pantheon is a building commissioned by Marcus Agrippa during the reign of Augustus as a temple to all the gods of ancient Rome, and rebuilt by the emperor Hadrian about 126 AD.

5:00PM 6:00PM 8:00PM TREVI FOUNTAIN Standing 26.3 metres (86 ft) high and 49.15 metres (161.3 ft) wide, Trevi is the largest Baroque fountain in the city and one of the most famous fountains in the world. The fountain has appeared in several notable films, including Federico Fellini's La Dolce Vita and is a popular tourist attraction. An estimated 3,000 Euros are thrown into the fountain each day. The money has been used to subsidize a supermarket for Rome's needy; however, there are regular attempts to steal coins from the fountain. Coins are purportedly meant to be thrown using the right hand over the left shoulder.tradition holds that if a visitor throws a coin into the fountain, it ensures a return to Rome. OVERNIGHT IN ROME Day 8 - Saturday March 17 10:00AM 11:30AM 2:00PM 3:00PM 4:00PM 5:00PM 6:00PM 7:00PM DEPART FOR ANCIENT ROME ROMAN FORUM The Roman Forum is a rectangular forum (plaza) surrounded by the ruins of several important ancient government buildings at the centre of the city of Rome. Citizens of the ancient city referred to this space, originally a marketplace, as the Forum Magnum, or simply the Forum. It was for centuries the centre of Roman public life: the site of triumphal processions and elections; the venue for public speeches, criminal trials, and gladiatorial matches; and the nucleus of commercial affairs. Here statues and monuments commemorated the city's great men. The teeming heart of ancient Rome, it has been called the most celebrated meeting place in the world, and in all history. Located in the small valley between the Palatine and Capitoline Hills, the Forum today is a sprawling ruin of architectural fragments and intermittent archeological excavations attracting numerous people. COLOSSEUM The Colosseum, also known as the Flavian Amphitheatre is an elliptical amphitheatre in the centre of the city of Rome. As the Cathedral of the Pope qua Bishop of Rome, it ranks superior to all other churches of the Roman Catholic Church, including St. Peter's Basilica, and therefore it alone is titled "Archbasilica" among all other basilicas. It is one of the oldest burial grounds in continuous use in Europe, having started to be used around 1716. It was also referred to in the past as The English Cemetery because of the many English people buried there. via Caio Cestio, 6, Rome,, 00153 CATACOMBS OF ST. SEBASTIAN Phone: +39 06 78 50 350 This cemetery, named after the martyr St. Sebastian, who is buried here, was originally called "ad catacumbas". According to the widely acknowledged explanation, the name signifies "near the hollows", because of the mines of tuff located in this area. The name was later used generally to indicate all subterranean Christian cemeteries. Another ancient name of the cemetery was "Apostolic Memorial" (Memoria Apostolorum). The name derives from the liturgical celebrations, dedicated to the Apostles Peter and Paul, which took place here for a limited period in the first centuries. From the first century, the site had been intensely exploited and constructed upon. The caves and the tunnels of the mines were used for pagan and Christian rectangular wall tombs, as well smaller tombs used to house urns. At least two residential buildings were constructed above ground, especially noted for their interior wall painting decorations. Around the middle of the second century, a cave-in occurred, and in the square which was constructed above ground, three mausoleums were built, respectively belonging to Clodius Hermes, the Innocentores and "sub Ascia". Later this area was again covered over and a portico enclosed by a wall was built. Along the wall, hundreds of graffiti writings, dedicated to Peter and Paul, have been deciphered. Around the year 258, the religious celebrations commemorating the two Apostles were transferred to the site, and the emperor Constantine had a grandisose circiform basilica constructed in the honour of the Apostles. Meanwhile, the catacomb had been developing underground from the third century. As it is well known from archeological and literary sources, the martyrs Sebastian and Eutychius were buried here. The Church of Domine Quo Vadis is in the second mile of the road. Along or close to the part of the road closest to Rome, there are three catacombs of Roman and early Christian origin and one of Jewish origin. To this day the Via Appia contains the longest stretch of straight road in Europe, totalling 62 km. The Sistine Chapel with its ceiling decorated by Michelangelo and the Stanze della Segnatura decorated by Raphael are on the visitor route through the Vatican Museums. ST. PETER'S BASILICA St. Peter's Basilica is regarded as one of the holiest Catholic sites. It has been described as "holding a unique position in the Christian world" and as "the greatest of all churches of Christendom". By Roman Catholic tradition, the basilica is the burial site of its namesake Saint Peter, one of the twelve apostles of Jesus and, also according to tradition, the first Bishop of Rome and therefore first in the line of the papal succession. Tradition and some historical evidence hold that Saint Peter's tomb is directly below the altar of the basilica. For this reason, many Popes have been interred at St. Peter's since the Early Christian period. There has been a church on this site since the time of Constantine the Great. Construction of the present basilica, replacing the Old St. Peter's Basilica of the 4th century, began on 18 April 1506 and was completed on 18 November 1626. St. Peter's is famous as a place of pilgrimage, for its liturgical functions. Because of its location in the Vatican, the Pope presides at a number of services throughout the year, drawing audiences of 15,000 to over 80,000 people, either within the Vatican Basilica, or in St. Peter's Square. St. Peter's has many strong historical associations, with the Early Christian church, the papacy, the Protestant Reformation and Counter-reformation, and with numerous artists, most significantly Michelangelo. As a work of architecture, it is regarded as the greatest building of its age. St. Peter's is one of the four churches of Rome that hold the rank of Major Basilica.
