BAY ISLANDS REEFS The Boy islands abut the Mesa-arnerican Barrier Reef the world's second largest corai reef and offer an amazing diversity at marine life. The isiands and waters surrounding them out to 12 nautical miles were declared a national marine park in 2010 and are subject to a management plan that is still under develop} ment. The main organizations working to protect the reef are the Bay Isionois Conservation Association, which has offices on Utiia and Roatan, andthe Roatan Marine Park. These organizations work to stop illegal activity on and around the reef, provide marine infra structure such as mooiings to limit damage to the reef, raise community awareness, conduct environmental impact assessments and restore damaged areas. To enjoy the Bay islands marine resources responsibly: 1} Don't chase or touch animals. 2} Don't remove anything that is part of the natural environment; this includes conch shells. starfish. coral or any other materials, alive or dead. 3} Don't use spear guns or harpoons. Urge guides to act responsibly and tip them for their cooperation. 4} Stay on trails at other designated areas. 5} Don't dump waste within three miles of the coast. 6} Don't throw anything plastic into the water. 7} Report environmental damage to authorities. 8} Avoid handicraft and souvenir items made from endangered or threatened species or cotai. 9] Choose seafood products caught at harvested ttom sustainable native tish populations [look for the Bay tsianas Responsible Seafood Guide emblem.)
ROATAN FACTS Population: Approx. 80.000 [latest census results due to be reported in early 2014] Geography: Roatan is 48 km long, running essentially from west to east, and varies from one to four km wide. With wooded hills as tall as 240 meters, the island is a range of ridges and gently sloping valleys sloping to marshes. sandy beaches or mangrove forests. Periodical streams. or guliies. supply the ample aquifer system. Climate: The Bay islands temperatures range from 25 to 35 degrees celsius. Annual rainfall averages 267 cm. with two-thirds falling from October to January. Easterly trade winds of 20-25 miies an hour are fairly constant. Geology: Roatan. like Guanaja. is the crest of the submerged Bonacca Ridge. It atronts the Mesoamerican Reef. the world's second largest barrier reef. Depths of 2,000 meters are common beyond the reef waii.the Cayman lsiand Trough runs 48 km north of the Bay Islands and is where the Caribbean tectonic plates join. Early inhabitants: The earliest known human inhabitants of the Bay Islands. the Paya [Pooh]. were encountered by Christopher Columbus in 1502. clay figures. conch trumpets and shell ornaments can still be found. The Paya were decimated during Spanish slave expeditions to Hispaniola and Cuba in the 16th century. Those that survived were removed to the mainland in the 1640s. Pirates: Strategically positioned within sight of Trujillo and Puerto Cabaiios. Roatan was home to many famous pirates, including Blackbeard, Henry Morgan. Nicholas Van Horn. John Coxen and Philip Ashton. Between the l560s and i740s Roatan was used as a supply base ior buccaneers raiding the Spanish Mainland. UTILA INFO Utila is the result of a tiat tormatlon known as a shield volcano. Whereas Roatan is an outward sloping ridge descending into the ocean with wide shelves at its edges.
