History Happened Here Oswego County has historic sites of national significance, from the French and Indian War at Fort Ontario in Oswego, to the most documented Underground Railroad sites in New York. During World War II, the Fort Ontario Emergency Refugee Shelter was the only place in America to house nearly one thousand survivors of the Nazi Holocaust. As you visit the historic sites throughout the county, you ll take a step back in time and gain a better understanding of events that shaped our country s history. Dr. Mary Edwards Walker (1832-1919), is the only woman to receive the Congressional Medal of Honor, which was awarded for service during the Civil War. She was among the first women in the country to receive a medical degree, and was cited for valor in going behind enemy lines to attend to the wounded. She was a surgeon, a public lecturer, and an outspoken champion of women s rights. Dr. Walker was born and lived in the Town of Oswego, and her grave is in the Rural Cemetery there. 2 For More Information: 800.248.4FUN

Tee Time Oswego County s rolling and rural landscape offers the perfect setting for a relaxing round of golf. You ll find 13 public courses throughout the county with challenging fairways and greens to match all levels of skill. The 18-hole golf course at Battle Island State Park overlooks the site where, on July 3, 1756, the British Lieutenant Colonel John Bradstreet was ambushed by a party of French soldiers and their Native American allies. Bradstreet s party was traveling by boat to Schenectady after delivering badly-needed supplies to the forts in Oswego. The British counterattacked from the small island and the French retreated after about an hour. Dr. George Franklin Grant was born in Oswego in 1846 and invented the golf tee. Grant received a patent for the golf tee in 1899, the blueprint for today s wooden and plastic tees. He is a descendant of Tudor E. Grant, who escaped slavery to settle in Oswego in the 1830s. Weather emergency information will be broadcast by the National Weather Service over NOAA Weather Radio. Sirens have been installed in the 10- mile radius of Nine Mile Point to alert residents and visitors of an emergency at a nuclear power plant. The sirens emit steady, high-pitched signals. If you hear a siren for an extended period of time (3 to 5 minutes) you should turn on a radio or television and listen for instructions over the Emergency Alert System. Boaters and people fishing on the Oswego River and Lake Ontario would be notified by either the U.S. Coast Guard or the Oswego County Sheriff s Department. Parks would be closed immediately. The sirens are tested four times a year. During siren testing, if you hear multiple, repeated activation of sirens within a few minutes, you should turn on a radio or television and listen to an EAS station for information. People may be asked to remain indoors or to leave the area during a nuclear power plant emergency. If you are advised to leave the area, please follow the instructions given on the Emergency Alert System (EAS) stations. You may be advised to go directly to the Reception Center at the New York State Fairgrounds in Syracuse for registration or radiation monitoring.
