HATYAI INTERNATIONAL MARATHON 2015 The Hatyai International Marathon 2015 - the 9th edition was held at Hatyai on Sunday 24th May 2015 at the Jiranakorn Stadium-(start and finish lines). This Marathon was specially held to celebrate HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn s auspicious 60th birthday anniversary. About 6000 participants from all over the world took part in this Hatyai Marathon 2015 or Run For Happiness to celebrate the Princess Birthday. It was a beautiful and mildly warm Sunday morning when the marathon started the routes for the run cover Hatyai City Centre and the outskirts. It was like a carnival along the routes where Thais in their colourful and traditional dresses dancing and cheering the runners with accompanying music. After finishing the runs at the stadium there were all kinds of Thai food, fruits, and drinks for the runners, a Thai hospitality at its best. It was a memorable run for all the participants, truly a Run For Happiness! Taking part in this marathon were MASRA members, James Foo Jee Lai and Selvarajah. They completed the runs in good times and received the beautiful medals. In conjunction with this Thai International Marathon 2015 held on 24th May 2015- I organised a 4D3N trip to members who may like to take part in the marathon or just to tour the city for those not participating in the marathon. Only 12 members and their spouses signed up for the trip. In order for me to hire a luxury stage coach, we need a minimum of 25 passengers. As the number of members signed up not sufficient, the trip was called off. For members who may like to visit Hatyai, here is a short brief of the city. Hatyai is the fourth largest city in Thailand and is located in Songkhla Province - South Thailand - near the Malaysian Border. Hatyai is the urban hub of South Thailand where Western style shopping malls mingle with an incredible range of street stalls selling all kinds of local Thai food, snacks, drinks and souvenirs. Hatyai is the business centre, while Songkhla, the coastal city is the capital and centre of administraion and culture. These two cities are extremely popular tourist spots for Malaysians and Singaporeans on holidays. To get to Hatyai for the Marathon on 24th May 2015 Selva and spouse and I and a few other colleagues travelled by express bus from KL Pudu Central. There are a few Bus Companies offering direct luxury coach from KL Pudu Central to Hatyai at a cost of RM60.00 per passenger. The express bus we took left KL Pudu Central at 11.00 pm and reached the Malaysia/ Border at 6.30 am. After the usual customs/ immigrations check points at this border, it was one James Foo Jee Lai & Selvarajah with their medals after completing The Hatyai Marathon 2015. and half hours to Hatyai city centre. The return trip to KL is also RM60.00. If members have any ideas of some good and relaxing places too visit, please call or forward your suggestion to the MASRA office so that the committee can decide and organise the outings for members. - Cpt. 911 ZAINAL ABIDIN ADAM Capt. Zainal retired from Engineering Dept. KULAP. He was one of the earliest members of MASRA. Subsequently he was elected into the AJK Executive committee Member and served for a few terms. Because he was very active in sporting and outdoor activites, he was appointed into the Recreation and Sports portfolio in the AJK to organise excursions and outdoor activities for members. He had organised many such actvities/ excursions to Taman Negara, Pulau Langkawi, Pangkor, etc. Family outings like Janda Baik, Ulu Langat and climbing mountains like the nearby Gunung Nuang, Gunung Jerai (Kedah) Gunung Raja (Langkawi), Gunung Santubong (Sarawak) and the highest mountain in Asia, Mt Kinabalu. Capt. Zainal was a regular and active member in the monthly morning breakfast walks and took the lead in performing physical exercise for members. Selvarajah and I came to know Capt. Zainal closely through these morning walks and the many outdoor activities we spent together. The three of us Capt. Zainal, Selva and I realized that we have the same adventurous spirits, like running marathons, mountain climbing, trekking etc. The following are fond memories of the many extraordinary activities that the three of us have gone through:# at Gunung Mulu National Park, we trekked for many hours from the Park HQ, through dense forest, crossing rivers to reach Camp5 to climb Gunung Api The Pinnacle. # in West Sumatra from BukitTinggi we innocently climbed Gunung Merapi without realising that it was an active volcano only to discover hot lava bubbling near the summit! # in Sabah, we climbed Mt Kinabalu at 2.30 am in pitch darkness to reach the summit to watch the beautiful sunrise in the cold morning from the peak. # took part together in many local marathons and the Sabah International Marathons, Kota Kinabalu for several years in a row. # took part together with MAS runners in the yearly World Airline Road Race, most recently in Qingdao, East China, when Capt. Zainal got lost from our group and we organised search teams from our own group to look for him. In all our outings and adventures together, we know Capt. Zainal would not take outside food. No matter how we tried to coax or belanja him he would always turn down and preferred to cook his own food, whether in the hotel room we shared or outside when camping. Selva and I would never forget the hilarious times we shared he did his cooking in the hotel room we shared. He would wake up early to perform his morning prayers then proceeded to heat his hot plate and start frying mee goreng, with chilli, sambal and ikan bilis. The aroma from the sambal belacan and the sizzling sound of the ikan bilis being fried woke me and Selva up. He would cheerfully called us, Foo and Selva, mee goreng ready, teh pun siap, mari makan. Capt Zainal, Selva and I will never forget such a wonderful and caring friend like you. Farewell Capt. Zainal, may you rest in peace. - continue from page 8 Holidays In Maldives Maldives is a tropical nation in the Indian Ocean composed of 26 coral atolls, which are made up of hundreds of islands. It is known for its beaches, blue lagoons and extensive reefs. It is a beautiful string of 1,190 low lying coral islands scattered across the equator in the vast expanse of the Indian Ocean. It is located 300 miles southwest of the southern tip of India. Tourists flock in large numbers to the 80 odd self contained island resorts provided with all the comforts and warmth exuded by the traditional Maldivian hospitality. No wonder, this place is considered to be the ultimate destination for holiday makers. Malaysia Airlines offers convenient daily night flights from Kuala Lumpur to Male, the capital of Maldives. My family of four took the opportunity to spend our holidays in Maldives on 90% sub load travel. The MH flight to Male had 40 seats vacant when I checked a month earlier prior to travel and made the hotel bookings accordingly through Ms. Mauna, former student of mine, who now works for a travel agency in Maldives. Finally we had to travel on 29 April 2015, as we were advised that the flight on 30 April was going full. Since our flight arrives in Male late at night, we had to book an accommodation for 1 night at (USD120 per night for the four of us) to see the little crowded town of 100,000 people. Since we left a day earlier, we had to stay an extra night and finally it was a 2 nights stay in Male. On the third day, we went off to the island resort by 30 minute smooth and scenic speed boat ride, as it was considered an off peak period (May to Sept), the all inclusive package offer for the Water Villa in the resort was RM2000.00 per room for 2 pax per day. We stayed at the resort for 4 days and 3 nights. As a Senior Reviewer, TripAdvisor published it and there 21 helpful votes. A perfect place to unwind 1. Experience - We were warmly greeted with cold towels and a cool drink on arrival after a 30 min speedboat ride from Male airport. After a quick check in, our bags were transferred to the rooms. 2. Facilities - View from our water villas was simply breathtaking with corals, deep blue sea, awesome sunrise and sunset. Colourful fish, clean white powdery beaches, never ending sound of the waves in this private island is a wonderful treat. Motorized and non-motorized sports equipments were available at a price. The property is very well maintained. 3. Food & Beverage - With All inclusive package, 3 main meals and snacks and drinks served in between the main meals will keep you strong and refreshed after the tiring sea and beach activities. Well trained staff depicting in their friendly attitude is a plus point. Please be aware that All Inclusive, means only selected drinks served in the bar are available in the package. 4. Entertainment - Nightly performance of a resident band and a DJ together with the staff will ensure the guests are happy and entertained. Could see smiles everywhere. 5. Hospitality - Staff will make you feel at home for a truly rewarding and a memorable experience. Truly a perfect place to unwind and a break away from the routine. 6. WhatsApp, is an instant messaging app for smartphones, which allows you to exchange messages without having to pay for sms. Pathmanaban started this WhatsApp group, with the heading, MHFriends about a year ago, which is very effective, though started off with just a few friends it has grown tremendously with multiple friends. MHFriends Reunion dinner was organized by the MHFriends WhatsApp group under the Chairmanship of Mr Suppiah, with his committee of ten friends including himself. There were no invitation cards or money spent on postage. Details of the proposed dinner, was posted on MHFriends WhatsApp page and the friends submit their names and made payment through the bank. Initially there were just a few friends but the number finally hit the target attendees for the dinner to 110. The dinner was held at Subang Golf Club on Saturday 13th June 2015 at 1930 hrs. During the dinner we can observe the air was filled with warmth, joy and happiness. Meeting old friends, recollecting the good times over an 8 (eight) course Chinese dinner, drinks, songs, birthday celebrations and fellowship is unforgettable. When we were preparing for the dinner, Brother Hardeep had suggested, Give us a momentous to remember this event. So we have. His wish is granted and all MHFriends can keep it for life.
