Page 2 President s Message March 18, 2008 O nly a couple of days left until spring and, hopefully, a lot better weather. I trust that everyone came through the storms this past week with no damage or injuries. We can now look forward to getting the Studebakers out to drive and show. I hope all of you are getting ready to go to Albany for the Fifth Georgia State Meet coming up in just a couple of weeks. Dan and I have sent in our reservation for the meet and look forward to seeing all of you there. Our April meeting will be in Albany on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. So everyone in attendance find me for the location. I anticipate our chapter having a good turnout for this meet. I want to take this opportunity to thank everyone who helped and brought food to the March meeting at our home. The food and your work was appreciated, the meeting would not have been as successful without you. I think that everyone who joined us had a good time. The weather turned out to be great and we had several Studebakers driven to the meeting. This was one of the biggest meetings we have had in a while, with several new members and guests present. We were also glad to have several members join us who have been unable to attend the meetings lately. We missed several of our regular members that could not attend for various reasons, and hope to see them soon. A lot was accomplished at the business part of the meeting (see the minutes printed in this issue). Page 4 has a list of members who have been in the hospital, or had illness at home. Page 3 North Georgia Chapter, Studebaker Drivers Club Meeting Minutes March 2, 2008 President Barbara Miller opened the meeting. We circulated a get-well card for John Brown. Recall that our April meeting will be the Georgia State Meet in Albany. Wayne Lee reported that the meet has 42 registrations with 69 banquet reservations to date. The motel is squared away; trophies and t-shirts are done. The amendment to our chapter by-laws, allowing the President to be an alternate signatory on the bank accounts, was passed by the members present at the meeting. Treasurer Charlotte Delli reported that badges for new members are to be ordered this week. They will be sent directly to the members, well in advance of the April meet. She also gave a recap of the chapter financial results for January & February. Charlotte also told us about the Deborah Campbell Memorial Classic Car Show, being held Saturday March 29, at the BB&T Financial Center, 215 North Wall Street, in Calhoun. Registration is $25.00, with all proceeds to benefit the American Cancer Society. Event flyer will be in the Hillholder. Membership Secretary Bill Delli reports we have 65 memberships, covering 120 people Chris Collins has submitted the chapter calendar of events for the remainder of 2008 to the SDC webmaster and to Larry Swanson for Turning Wheels. We anticipate issuing a 2008 member roster in late March. Marguerite Smith discussed the American Cancer Society of Gwinnett Relay For Life, being held May 9-10. A drawing will be held to win a new Chrysler Sebring convertible. For more information, visit www.gwinnettrelayforlife.org, or call 1.800.ACS.2345. Ed Burris mentioned that the Hilton Head Concours is coming up again in the fall. At the SDC National level, the Junior Membership, for youth under 12 years old, has been discontinued. It was little else beyond a membership card & certificate. The Student/Young Adult Membership, including Turning Wheels, continues for $19.95 per year. The club overall is in a solid financial position, with over $1 million in funds. The Tri-State Meet in Asheville has been changed to the weekend of August 23. Wayne has a list of meetings within our zone; he will pass it on to Chris. The roster of states and chapters is also being revised, and he will forward that once it is finalized. We discussed getting a Taxpayer Identification Number for our chapter, so we can place our surplus checking account funds into an interest-bearing instrument. We also talked about donating some of our surplus to charity. Charlotte made a motion to set up a committee of 3-5 people to explore this possibility. Seconded by Charleen Carey, and approved by the members present. Charlotte volunteered to head the committee exploring a charitable donation. John Hollier also volunteered to join the group. Marguerite won the 50/50 drawing; proceeds were $50 each to her and to the chapter. There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned. See you in April!

We were pleased he could be with us in March. Fred Martin underwent a successful cardiac catheterization in early March. Page 5 Letters to the Editor OPPORTUNITY KNOCKS As reported at the March meeting of the North Georgia Chapter SDC, the Chapter s treasury has a balance exceeding $6,000. The balance is currently residing in a checking account at the BB&T bank. Several members expressed concern that the Chapter is not doing anything with the money except letting it sit in the checking account. Suggestions ranged from using it for charitable purposes to investing it in an IRA or Certificate of Deposit. At the meeting, the Chapter members approved forming a committee to explore possibilities and report back to the Chapter with recommendations. Two members (Charlotte Delli and Dr. John Hollier) volunteered and three more volunteers are needed. Most of the committee business will be conducted by e-mail with one or two face-to-face meetings to finalize recommendations. This is an opportunity for Chapter members to get involved. If you want to volunteer for the committee, please notify Charlotte Delli at calh407@comcast.net by March 31 st. If you have ideas or projects to propose, send them to Charlotte as well at the same e-mail address. Please step up to the plate and add your voice to this issue. Thank you! Charlotte To introduce myself, I am a member of the Smoky Mountain Studebaker Drivers Club, and I started and currently maintain a web page for the club: http://www.smokymountainstudebaker.org/. I have also obtained a domain and opened a web page for 1961 Hawks: http://www.61studebakerhawk.org/. I hope to post photographs and information on each and every 61 Hawk still in existence, but I know, of course, that is not possible. Also I wish to establish and maintain---or find someone else willing to establish and maintain---a data base covering each of those Hawks. If you have or know of someone who has a 61 Hawk and would like to have it featured on the site, please send me photos and information on the Hawk. Among these are the starter, generator, gauges, 4 bbl manifold with carburetor and linkage, transmission with flex plate, torque converter and bell housing. Complete steering wheel with column and steering box, heater control unit with switch, defroster blower assembly with switch, brake drums, plus many other items. Fenders and a few other parts are off the car and in primer while I was repainting the frame. Interior is worn out but is all there and all original. $8,800. 1937 Coupe Express. RestoRod. Solid truck; it is my daily driver. 350 Corvette engine, 700R4 trans, posi rear end. Mustang IFS. No mods to the body, looks stock. Not a show truck, just a great driver that could be turned into a real show winner. $35,000. 1947 M 1/2 Ton pickup truck. Dry desert truck. Faded paint and surface rust. Looks like a barn find. Full independent front and rear ends. 318 police pursuit engine with a 727 auto trans. Air conditioned. Call for more details. $9,500 289 Engine. Mfg. 2/63 as a 259 Jet Thrust. Rebuilt by Tommy Goza using as many NOS parts as possible. Changed to a 289. Pistons and rings are.10 over; everything else is standard including all bearings. Hardened valves and seats to run on unleaded pump gas. Call for full specifications. Ready to drop in and run. $6,900. 289 Engine pulled from a running car. It was a supercharged engine but the supercharger is not included. It has the Bendix WW series carb. It was running just fine but I have not broken it down to determine the internals. $600. (4/2008) Two Studebaker 259 Engines. Turn but probably need rebuilding. First is serial VN313, a 1964 engine with the full flow block, Includes heads, manifolds (2 bbl). These engines are desirable because 100% of the oil is circulated through the oil filter before it goes to the rest of the engine. This block can easily be made into a 289 with a 289 crankshaft and pistons. $300. Second engine is serial V555133, which the book says came from an early 1962 car. It also comes complete with heads, manifolds, etc. $150. Page 17 STUDEBAKER MEDIA I finally finished it! This is a 99 page book I've put together based on the articles of the same name that appeared in Turning Wheels in the early 1990s and which won the SDC's Churchill Award for Best Article, Non-Paid. The book contains all the material from the original series, which ran for a year and a half in The Hillholder, and not only replaces some material edited out for the TW series, but has updates and several new items that were written after the TW series was published. "Some Thoughts" is aimed at the first-time restorer, but will be of value to the more experienced; it doesn't try to be a "how to restore a car book", but gives you a look at the decision-making processes, tools, spaces and basic skills you'll need to do a restoration, and will provide a framework to help you structure your project. There are several chapters of Studebaker-specific advice. In the chapter devoted to engine rebuilding, I've tried to describe a step-by-step process that anybody can follow, and included tips I've picked up in building 60+ engines. I've received many compliments on the engine chapter, and I'm glad to finally be able to get it in print. The book is priced at $22.50, plus $4.00 for packaging and postage.
